After two ProPublica journalists published an investigative report, they were targeted by an onslaught of harassing emails. The "email bombing" attack soon brought the entire organization's email system to a halt, highlighting the serious impact such an attack can have in effectively silencing the media. What's worse, such attacks are trivially easy to pull off - whether by a technically savvy actor or by paying for the service, as you can pay for an attack for as little as $5 per 1,000 emails. Story by Julia Angwin, ProPublica.
