Faced with a daily barrage of news, college students find it hard to tell what’s real and what’s ‘fake news’
Link: https://news.northeastern.edu/2018/10/16/faced-with-a-daily-barrage-of-news-college-students-find-it-hard-to-tell-whats-real-and-whats-fake-news/
College students turn to their peers and online versions of trusted newspapers for news at least twice as often as they do to print publications, TV, or podcasts. Those who get their news on social media turn to Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube more often than Twitter. And nine out of ten college students get their news from at least five different sources in a given week.

With so many different ways to get news, students face a constant surge that makes it difficult for them to distinguish between what’s real and what’s fake, and in some cases, to trust any news at all, according to a new report from one of the largest and most comprehensive studies of youth media engagement.

“Young people have different ways of consuming news than people born even a decade before them,” said John Wihbey, a Northeastern professor and one of the researchers who conducted the study. “Our report suggests that in some ways, we have created for young people an extremely difficult environment of news. We need to figure out ways to guide them so they can navigate it.”

Michael Caulfield: The Persistent Myth of Insurmountable Tribalism Will Kill Us All - https://hapgood.us/2018/10/16/the-persistent-myth-of-insurmountable-tribalism-will-kill-us-all/
New Knight Foundation-supported study out about college students which very much confirms what we see in classrooms. Students:

feel overwhelmed by the “firehose of news”
feel unequipped to sort through that news
want to read and share truthful accounts
believe in journalistic principles of accuracy and verification
but fall back on cynicism as a strategy, believing far more news to be fake or spun than really is
All this is exactly what we see in classrooms. Every class might have one or two hardcore partisans, but the vast majority of students feel OVERWHELMED. They want to do the right thing, but it seems impossibly time-intensive and complex.

What we find in this environment is that some students initially talk like hardcore partisans when looking at prompts, before they have the skills to navigate the overload. But that’s because the alternative to reacting tribally is an investigation they imagine is going to take them an afternoon. Once they have the skills, that tendency slips away. Here’s the sort of answers we’re getting after one week of skills training when a student looks at a story of declining arctic ice from the National Snow & Ice Data Center (an excellent source, BTW):

“This site appears trustworthy. I searched Google news and found it is cited by multiple credible sources including bigger weather news sites. I also used the “Just add Wikipedia” trick as a way to investigate funding and found that it is partially funded by the US through NASA, which shows there are probably experts there.”

“It’s good, they’ve been around forever and are affiliated with other research facilities like University of Colorado.”

—(amalgamation of several student responses to protect student privacy).

We do enough of these in class that we can see they get to this point in less than 60 seconds for many tasks. If the habits hold, when someone tries to pull them slowly into post-truth land, they’ll have a natural resistance. Maybe enough to avoid the first steps down that slippery slope.

How Streaming changes Song Structures
Very mainstream-view of pop-music. Streaming seems to „streamline“ music in the process: shorter, simpler, diverse (meaning: 1 artist in 10 genres) which plays into "collaborative", where artists from different genres work together. Funny: „Songs Into Soundtracks“ is the new phrase for musicvideo, I guess?

Plus: I'd add "Visibility in Playlists" with various points to that list: Songs gotta be catchy in the first seconds to gain attention from curators, they need to gain attention from automated playlist-algorithms and so on.

Link: <a href="https://output.com/blog/7-songs-that-prove-streaming-has-changed-song-structures">7 Songs That Prove Streaming Has Changed Song Structures</a> <small>(<a href="https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2018/10/streaming-changed-song-structures.html">via Marginal Revolution</a>)</small>

1. Streamings’ Data Collection Makes Songs Simpler
2. Streaming Sites’ Social Media Makes Songs Confessional
3. Small Streaming Profits Make Songs Shorter
4. Streaming’s Customizability Makes Songs Built To Order
5. Content Digitization Makes Songs More Diverse
6. Free Content Makes Songs More Collaborative

Artistic competition is so fierce nowadays that artists need to constantly release music. One way to do this is to make songs shorter and simpler; another way is to get a producer to make the beat, a singer to make the chorus, and another rapper for the second verse. This leads to Migos member Offset, DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Chance The Rapper, and Lil Wayne all appearing on the same 2017 song, “I’m The One.” It also means that fans start to see credits like those from Cardi B’s new album “Invasion of Privacy”. The 13 tracks on the album features 104 total writing credits, meaning 8 people per track. Its single “Be Careful” has 17 alone.

GLOBAL BRAIN SINGULARITY: University history and future evolution

In this presentation I attempt to present some of the core ideas from the first three sections of my PhD Thesis "Global Brain Singularity: Universal History, Future Evolution and Humanity's Dialectical Horizon". This presentation was hosted live at the Bertalanffy Center for Study of Systems Science (BCSSS) on September 25 2018 with Director Stefan Blachfellner.

In his paper, he talks about a "distributed singularity". Dig the Oxymoron.

Link: https://cadelllast.com/about/articles/
Paper: Global Brain: Foundations of a Distributed Singularity

ABSTRACT: Global Brain is a concept used to describe and understand the distributed and self-organizing intelligence currently emerging from all people and information-communication technologies (ICT) connected via the Internet. This network in its future form could be more intelligent and coherent than the current structure of the Internet with the capability to coordinate all necessary functional operations of human civilization. Such a system would represent a qualitatively new level of complexity and organization which would allow humans to solve planetary problems that cannot be solved by our highest contemporary controls. Thus, in a Global Brain metasystem the human possibility space would allow levels of freedom and opportunity which have never existed in evolutionary history.

A Physics of Ideas: Measuring The Physical Properties of Memes
Gute Ausarbeitung einer „Ideenphysik“, also Memetik. Die meisten der hier aufgelisteten Eigenschaften sind explizit oder auf Umwegen bereits im gegenwärtigen Internet implementiert, als Analytics- und Sharing-Tools oder Werkzeuge für die interne Weiterverarbeitung von Daten bei Facebook et al. Man vergleiche diesen Satz hier zB mit FBs algorithmisch sortierten Feed: „We can then apply the above measurements to entire corpora (collections of documents). This enables us to empirically rank the ideas occurring in the corpus in any interval of time.“ Which is exactly what FB is doing.

Link: http://www.novaspivack.com/science/a-physics-of-ideas-measuring-the-physical-properties-of-memes
Here are a set of basic measurements of the physical properties of memes and documents:

(Author’s Note, February 28, 2010: My latest thinking on this topic has evolved considerably from when this article was originally written in 2005. Instead of viewing memes as classical particles, I now think it is probably more accurate and useful to model them as physical waves or fields. At any given location (a media outlet, or a geographic place, or a person or document) every meme can be represented as a vector at any given time. In any case, regardless of the particular physical model we choose to map to memetics, the key point here is that it should be possible to make such a mapping from physics to memetics. This is a testable hypothesis. For example, select a certain mapping and generate some measurements about the higher order dynamics of memes, and then see if we can make testable predictions from those. Through such a process it should be possible to experimentally test and verify whatever mapping we choose, to find mappings that are most useful and accurate. Once we choose a mapping from physics to memetics that works, it could be an extraordinarily powerful tool for making sense of what is going on in the world, and particularly on the Web. I leave it to the physicists among us to come up the correct model, mappings, and experiments. In addition, since the original date of publication, social media has become an enormous playing field for memes and particularly rich source of data for measuring and mapping meme dynamics. In addition to documents we may also think of people and their lifestreams as sources of memetic data for measuring memes. Below is the original proposed mapping — which primarily was a classical physical model, focused on documents only.)

– Absolute meme mass = how “large” the meme is. There are various ways to come up with a measure of mass for memes and I don’t claim to have come up with the only, or even the best, way to do so. This is still a subject for further investigation. However, to begin, one approach at least is to interpret the mass as the total number of times a meme is mentioned in the corpus since the beginning of time to the present. However, it has been pointed out that this interpretation will cause the mass to increase over time. Still, it may be a useful interpretation, and in this paper I will use it provisionally. Another and perhaps better possibility, is to quantify the relative importance of particular memes in advance (for example by having analysts rate the terms that are most important to them) and to use these values as the mass of those memes. Note: When computing meme mass, we can choose to count repeat mentions or ignore them — doing so has slightly different effects on the algorithm. We can also, if we wish, get more fancy and look at clusters of memes (via semantic network indexing or entity extraction, for example) that relate to the same concepts in order to compute “concept-cluster momenta” but that is not required.

– Absolute meme velocity = how fast the meme is moving in the corpus in the present time interval = The rate of occurrences (or “mentions”) of the meme per unit time (minutes, hours, days, etc.) in a given time interval.

– Absolute meme momentum = the force or importance of the meme in the corpus = the meme’s absolute mass x the meme’s absolute velocity

– Relative meme mass = the mass of a meme within a subset of documents or data in the corpus representing some set of interests. (Note: we call a subset of mutually co-relevant documents a “reference frame” or a “context.”) such as a set of interests, a particular period in time, etc. (rather than in the entire corpus).

– Relative meme velocity = the velocity of a meme within a reference frame.

– Relative meme momentum = the relative meme mass X the relative meme velocity.

On the basis of these we can then compute derivatives such as:

– Absolute meme acceleration = how the absolute meme velocity is changing in the entire corpus = The change in absolute velocity per unit time of the meme in the corpus.

– Relative meme acceleration = the change in relative velocity of a meme.

– Absolute meme impulse = the change in importance per unit time = the change in a meme’s absolute momentum.

– Relative meme impulse = the change of a meme’s relative momentum.

Next, we use the above concepts to look at sets of memes, for example documents:

– Absolute document momentum = the force or importance of a document in the entire corpus = the sum of the absolute momenta of each meme that occurs in the document. (Note: we may choose to count or ignore repeat occurrences of an article in different locations or at different times — this has different effects).

– Relative document momentum = the force or importance of a document within a reference frame = the sum of the relative meme momenta in the document. This is a more contextually sensitive measure of document momentum — it couples momentum more tightly with a context, such as a particular query or time interval, or demographic segment. (Note: we may choose to count or ignore repeat occurrences of an article in different locations or at different times — this has different effects).

– Hybrid document momentum = a measure of momentum that combines both relative and absolute measurements = either relative mass X absolute velocity or absolute mass X relative velocity.

Internet trolling and everyday sadism: Parallel effects on pain perception and moral judgment
Another paper linking sadistic traits with trolling. More interesting would be the role of Social Media-Mechanisms (Likes, Favs, Replies) in rationalization of sadistic behavior.
This research seeks to clarify the association between online trolling and sadistic personality, and to provide evidence that the reward and rationalization processes at work in sadism are likewise manifest in online trolling.

Online respondents (community adults and university students; total N = 1,715) completed self‐report measures of personality and trolling behavior. They subsequently engaged in one of two judgment tasks. In Study 1, respondents viewed stimuli depicting scenes of emotional/physical suffering and provided ratings of (a) perceived pain intensity and (b) pleasure experienced while viewing the photos. In Study 2, the iTroll questionnaire was developed and validated. It was then administered alongside a moral judgment task.

Across both studies, online trolling was strongly associated with a sadistic personality profile. Moreover, sadism and trolling predicted identical patterns of pleasure and harm minimization. The incremental contribution of sadism was sustained even when controlling for broader antisocial tendencies (i.e., the Dark Triad, callous‐unemotionality, and trait aggression).

Results confirm that online trolling is motivated (at least in part) by sadistic tendencies. Coupled with effective rationalization mechanisms, sadistic pleasure can be consummated in such everyday behaviors as online trolling.© 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

NYT on Reputation Systems: „The Fix for Fake News Isn't Code. It's Human.“
„Social media has weird testimonial norms.“

Regina Rini in the NYT about Reputation Systems (already implemented at FB for internal purposes) to fight Fake News. I'm with her on that, it's a simple, necessary development to hold people accountable for their publishing habbits.

Link: <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/15/opinion/facebook-fake-news-philosophy.html">The Fix for Fake News Isn't Code. It's Human.</a>
Here’s a system that might help, and it is based on something that Facebook already does to prevent the spread of fake news. Currently, Facebook asks independent fact-checking organizations from across the political spectrum to identify false and misleading information. Whenever users try to post something that has been identified as fake news, they are confronted by a pop-up that explains the problems with the news and asks them to confirm if they’d like to continue. None of these users are prevented from posting stories whose facts are in dispute, but they are required to know that what they are sharing may be false or misleading.

Facebook has been openly using this system since December 2016. Less openly, they have also been keeping tabs on how often its users attempt to flag stories as fake news, and, using this feature, they have been calculating the epistemic reliability of their users. The Washington Post reported in August that Facebook secretly calculates scores that represent how often users’ flags align with the analysis of independent fact-checkers. Facebook only uses this data internally, to identify abuse of the flagging system, and does not release it to users. I can’t find out my own reputation score, or the scores of any of my friends. […]

Instead of using this data to calculate a secret score, Facebook should display a simple reliability marker on every post and comment. Imagine a little colored dot next to the user’s name, similar to the blue verification badges Facebook and Twitter give to trusted accounts: a green dot could indicate that the user hasn’t chosen to share much disputed news, a yellow dot could indicate that they do it sometimes, and a red dot could indicate that they do it often. These reliability markers would allow anyone to see at a glance how reliable their friends are.

How our autistic ancestors played an important role in human evolution

Link: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/autistic-ancestors-human-evolution-science-archaeology-genetics-a7655671.html
Many people with autism have exceptional memory skills, heightened perception in realms of vision, taste and smell and in some contexts, an enhanced understanding of natural systems such as animal behaviour. And the incorporation of some of these skills into a community would have played a vital role in the development of specialists. It is very likely these specialists would then have become vitally important for the survival of the group.

One anthropological study of reindeer herders said: “The extraordinary old grandfather had a detailed knowledge of the parentage, medical history and moods of each one of the 2,600 animals in the herd. He was more comfortable in the company of reindeer than of humans, and always pitched his tent some way from everyone else and cooked for himself. His son worked in the herd and had been joined for the summer by his own teenage sons, Zhenya and young Sergei.”

Further evidence can be found in traits shared between some cave art and talented autistic artists – such as those paintings found in the Chauvet Cave, in southern France. This contains some of the best preserved figurative cave paintings in the world.

The Effect of Communism on People's Attitudes Toward Immigration
Interestingly, exposure to communism seems to increase distrust in strangers. Makes sense. The more social bounds are hardened by society, the more this society distrusts elements outside of these social bounds, especially when they learn to distrust their *own* people, as it was the case in east germany. So you distrust your own and *then* there's the stranger who gets double shit. Explains a lot.

Paper: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3246617
Does living in a communist regime make a person more concerned about immigration? This paper argues conceptually and demonstrates empirically that people’s attitudes toward immigration are affected by their country's politico-economic legacy. Exploiting a quasi-natural experiment arising from the historic division of Germany into East and West, I show that former East Germans, because of their exposure to communism, are notably more likely to be very concerned about immigration than former West Germans. Opposite of what existing literature finds, higher educational attainment in East Germany actually increases concerns. Further, I find that the effect of living in East Germany is driven by former East Germans who were born during, and not before, the communist rule and that differences in attitudes persist even after Germany’s reunification. People's trust in strangers and contact with foreigners represent two salient channels through which communism affects people's preferences toward immigration.

From Rama Sound Mannheim:

Glass - Official Trailer #2
M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, from Touchstone, and 2016’s Split, from Universal—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass.

From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.

Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
