The Real of the Virtual: Critical Reflections on Web 2.0 | Boikos | tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique. Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society
"Social media, as the heart of Web 2.0, is a relatively novel theoretical notion and social phenomenon, pertaining to a long series of academic subjects, such as digital culture, virtual communication, e-democracy, technological convergence, and online interactivity. Arguably, one of the most useful tools to adequately interpret and analyze this phenomenon is Critical Theory. The present article aims to comprehensively discuss and reflexively elaborate on the complex interrelationship between Critical Theory and Web 2.0 developments. This mainly involves the historicization of the relevant concepts and the identification of crucial sociological, philosophical and interdisciplinary issues that strongly demonstrate the essential ontological complicity between the real and the virtual. In addition, the analytical emphasis on recent social movements, such as the Arab Spring, reflexively depicts the new media as critical media, a characteristic feature that somehow stands in contrast to the participation of the internet in the circulation and accumulation of the Capital. Through contemporary Web’s inherent paradoxes, it is eventually shown that the social potential of the new media can indeed be realised, so that the internet serves the people and the public good."

Successful Web 2.0 Business Models « The Scholarly Kitchen
2 examples: Amanda Palmer, Chris Anderson.
"So, in summary, the secret to profiting from Web 2.0 is no longer what we thought–it used to be that everything was going to be free, and we’d all make money by selling t-shirts to one another. Instead, we all need to toil for years without pay to build a following, then sell our garbage online to that following (getting a famous boyfriend or putting yourself on magazine covers can also help). Then we hit the lecture circuit to tell everyone else how to sell garbage."

Techno Triumphalism, Twittering Towards the Singularity | The Agonist
The combined impact of these disasters on the American psyche has left us adrift. The failure of Clinton's dot.com economy to pull us out of our desperate need for petroleum has been well documented by Stirling and others. Web 2.0 is a kind of "sure we don't get paid money for any of this work, but we sure are communicating!" response.

The cult of the singularity is an attempt to get beyond all that. To have something we can believe in again, a vision for the future. Regardless of its truth or falsity, human beings must have a vision to aspire toward.

I've never seen so much panic around me, but panic is the last thing on my mind. My mood is eager impatience. I want to see our best, most creative, best-intentioned people in world society directly attacking our worst problems.
