The Mythical Man-Finger
"What I find distressing about modern user interface design, is not that it strives to create better metaphors, but that it has radically limited itself to a very constrained set of ideas about what is possible. Whatever system we’re designing, we design within the realm of pictures and index fingers. We argue endlessly over color, and screen regions, and steps, and flow, but the ground truth of our efforts doesn’t change. Ideas about using more than one finger (“gestures!”) or using your whole body (“Kinect!”) are greeted as thunderous breakthroughs. Think of the possibilities! Well, we should think of the possibilities. But we should also question whether our irrefragable ground assumptions are correct: commands are for geeks, mice are for moms."

Los Angeles Review of Books - The Next Level: Alexander R. Galloway’s “The Interface Effect”
"For many Americans, then, a great deal of contemporary life is mediated by interfaces, including laptop, smartphone, and television screens. That this perpetual mediation so often goes unexamined speaks to the importance of Alexander R. Galloway’s new monograph The Interface Effect. Galloway’s ambitious book aspires to be not only a theory of interfaces but also a broader rethinking of the field of “new media studies,” an academic discipline with precursors in the media theories of Marshall McLuhan and Raymond Williams in the 1960s that emerged properly with scholarship produced alongside the rise of web culture of the 1990s."

Thoughts for an eleventh September: Alvin Toffler, Hirohito, Sarah Palin « Adam Greenfield's Speedbird
"After my talks, I’m frequently enough asked about the comparative technical backwardness of the US, often in so many words. In such circumstances I invariably trot out Mimi Ito’s relativist line about “alternatively technologized modernities,” and the idea that different places, different polities arrive at – have to arrive at – divergent understandings about which technologies are appropriate for their given time and place. And I strongly believe that it’s a correct line..but it’s no longer true. What’s going on in the US isn’t, it’s clear to me, a measured and equally valid selection from the sheaf of available technosocial possibilities, but symptomatic, however subtly, of a headlong flight from contemporaneity. In the relatively narrow field of my interests – ambient informatics, the networked city – can be seen something profound writ small: among fully-developed nations, the US stands out as having generally rejected “futuristic” interventions in everyday urban life, to the point that what I’m bound to present as innovative to US audiences is almost laughably banal elsewhere."

Loper OS » Engelbart’s Violin
In the mind of today’s technological entrepreneur, the ideal user (and employee) is semi-skilled – or unskilled entirely.  The ideal user interface for such a person never rewards learning or experience when doing so would come at the cost of immediate accessibility to the neophyte.  This design philosophy is a mistake – a catastrophic, civilization-level mistake.  There is a place in the world for the violin as well as the kazoo.  Modern computer engineering is kazoo-only, and keyboards are only the most banal example of this fact.

Skeumorphism
"Skeumorphism is about communcating and reinforcing feelings – getting an application to become a memorable experience, not just a tool. It’s about communicating the purpose of a UI, not only the functions it enables."
