The Aftermath Of The Global Housing Bubble Chokes The World Banking System
The strange case (Or is it the normal case?) is the residential mortgage market in the United States. Look immediately above. Values of the equity asset have fallen more than 30 percent, but the values of the debt asset (mortgages) used to buy the equity asset (homes) have fallen two percent. Both of these investments have a right to title to the same asset, but one has fallen FIFTEEN TIMES further than the other. Is this the real world or is it make believe?

We Can’t Afford This House - Christopher Papagianis and Reihan Salam - National Review Online
In the United States, our industrial policy for most of the last century has been centered on housing. Tax subsidies and the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have helped channel hundreds of billions of dollars into housing...

What we need now is to turn away from this disastrous policy and find new, sustainable sources of jobs and economic growth. That will require a series of painful steps — among them, phasing out the mortgage-interest deduction and eliminating the GSEs — that will minimize the privileges housing enjoys relative to investments in other industries.

Here Comes the Neighborhood - Magazine - The Atlantic
Conventional suburbs are overbuilt and out of favor. In cities and suburbs alike, walkable neighborhoods linked by train are the future. Here’s how a new network of privately funded rail lines can make that future come to pass more quickly and cheaply—and help reinvigorate housing and the economy.

'Great Reset' Argues Against 'House Passion' : NPR
You know, we created this notion of an American dream and somehow, in the 1950s, tied it to home ownership. Historically, it'd been about finding and realizing your economic opportunity and political freedom. But during our era of mass production and American greatness, we really thought that extending home ownership to just about every American was part of the dream.

The National Housing Survey and the real estate bear market | Analysis & Opinion | Reuters
The psychological reasons for buying a home are so strong — the nesting instinct, the idea that you’re not at the mercy of a landlord, the feeling that paying rent is “throwing money away” in a way that paying mortgage interest or monthly maintenance fees is not — that people simply delude themselves into believing that homeownership in general is (a) an investment, when it isn’t; is (b) a good investment, when it isn’t; and is (c) a good idea even now, when rents are cheap and the downside in the housing market is huge.

Lowering the Ceiling on Roof Energy Losses: Scientific American Podcast
Via a proprietary technique, the researchers turn waste cooking oil into a liquid polymer, which hardens after application. As a roof coating, the polymer can reflect or absorb depending on conditions: it changes reflectivity at a particular temperature and so goes from reflecting light and emitting heat in the dog days to absorbing light and retaining heat in the cold.

Housing and Transportation Affordability Index
Americans traditionally consider housing affordable if it costs 30 percent or less of their income. The Housing + Transportation Affordability Index, in contrast, offers the true cost of housing based on its location by measuring the transportation costs associated with place.
