UC3: Web Archiving Activities
"With funding from the Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) and in partnership with UCLA and Harvard University, CDL is developing Cobweb, an open source platform to support collaborative collection development for web archives. Cobweb’s core functionality supports digital curators in establishing projects to collect thematically organized web archives, allows for submission of nominations to those projects, tracks claims made by collecting organizations to participate by archiving nominated web resources, and reports on holdings that have been archived. The shared curatorial decision-making enabled by Cobweb will benefit libraries and archives already engaged in web archiving as well as those that have not yet started, and it will help them make better informed decisions regarding the allocation of their finite resources. Cobweb also provides researchers with aggregated descriptions of archived resources to help them identify and find those useful to their research."

DH Curation | A community of practice
"Humanists have data and they need data skills. As the materials and analytical practices of research become increasingly digital, the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of information science, librarianship, and archival science will become ever more vital to humanists and to anyone working with cultural heritage."

Introducing Documenting the Now - Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities
"A few weeks ago MITH announced that it will be partnering with Washington University in St Louis (WUSTL) and the University of California at Riverside (UCR) on a new project called Documenting the Now. Documenting the Now is aimed at accomplishing two different, but deeply interrelated goals. The first is to develop an open source Web application called DocNow that will allow researchers and archivists to easily collect, analyze and preserve Twitter messages and the Web resources they reference. The second is to cultivate a much needed conversation between scholars, archivists, journalists and human rights activists around the effective and ethical use of social media content. We are very grateful to the Andrew Mellon Foundation for its generous support that will allow us to pursue these goals over the next two years."

Home - 4C Project
"4C will help organisations across Europe to invest more effectively in digital curation and preservation. Research in digital preservation and curation has tended to emphasize the cost and complexity of the task in hand. 4C reminds us that the point of this investment is to realise a benefit, so our research must encompass related concepts such as ‘risk’, ‘value’, ‘quality’ and ‘sustainability’."

Digital Curation Bibliography: Preservation and Stewardship of Scholarly Works
In a rapidly changing technological environment, the difficult task of ensuring long-term access to digital information is increasingly important. The Digital Curation Bibliography: Preservation and Stewardship of Scholarly Works presents over 650 English-language articles, books, and technical reports that are useful in understanding digital curation and preservation.

Content Curators Are The New Superheros Of The Web | Fast Company
Curation is the act of individuals with a passion for a content area to find, contextualize, and organize information. Curators provide a consistent update regarding what's interesting, happening, and cool in their focus. Curators tend to have a unique and consistent point of view--providing a reliable context for the content that they discover and organize. To be clear, Pinterest both creates tools to organize the noisy web and, at the same time, creates more instances of information in a different context. So it's both part of the problem, and a solution. The trick is finding the Pinterest pinboards that you like, and tune out the rest.

Text Patterns: curators and imitators
"You know one thing that annoys me? The way some people on the internet use the word “curator.” People find cool stuff online and put links to that cool stuff on their website, and they say that they’re “curating” the internet. When Jorn Barger invented that kind of thing he was content to call it a weblog — a record or “log” of interesting stuff he found online."

The museographer and the object
"the room also reminded me of the degree to which being in a house filled with things makes me think differently about the history of medicine. This might not exactly be a groundbreaking insight, but is bears repeating often. The material environment we occupy is foundational for our cognitive states."

Curation is the New Search is the New Curation
"What has happened is that Google's ranking algorithm, like any trading algorithm, has lost its alpha. It no longer has lists to draw and, on its own, it no longer generates the same outperformance -- in part because it is, for practical purposes, reverse-engineered, well-understood and operating in an adaptive content landscape. Search results in many categories are now honey pots embedded in ruined landscapes -- traps for the unwary. It has turned search back into something like it was in the dying days of first-generation algorithmic search, like Excite and Altavista: results so polluted by spam that you often started looking at results only on the second or third page -- the first page was a smoking hulk of algo-optimized awfulness."

Researchers launch hunt for endangered data : Nature News
Around the world, key scientific data are at risk of being lost, either because they are held on fragile or obsolete media or because they may be destroyed by researchers who are unaware of their value. Now a team of scientists is planning to scour museums and research institutes to draw up a global inventory of threatened data. Launched on 29 October, shortly after the biennial conference of the Committee on Data for Science and Technology in Stellenbosch, South Africa, the project aims to publish the inventory online in 2012.

Creating a distributed curatorial expertise for acquisitioning the contemporary medical heritage
In this scenario — what would the role of the curator be? Instead of doing all the curatorial work themselves, professional museum curators would rather develop guidelines for how the network of distributed curators shall curate and preserve; the professionals would also distribute protocols for registration in a wiki-based central database; and, most importantly, they would spend much time and energy raising discussions among the practitioners of why the scientific, technological, and medical heritage is worth keeping and its role in the creation of cultural identity. In short, the main role of professional museum curators would be to build a distributed curatorial experience.

Curation Micro-Services
Developed with CDL programs and partners (e.g., LoC, UMich), curation micro-services offer an unbundled alternative to all-in-one repositories that can be expensive to support and modify (cf DSpace, Fedora, LOCKSS). Using native operating system file and web services, we define minimal conventions to turn a file system into an "object system" and provide low barrier tools for full lifecycle enrichment (identity, fixity, replication, annotation, etc.) of objects

[0906.0485] First results from the PARSE.Insight project: HEP survey on data preservation, re-use and (open) access
There is growing interest in the issues of preservation and re-use of the records of science, in the "digital era". The aim of the PARSE.Insight project, partly financed by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Program, is twofold: to provide an assessment of the current activities, trends and risks in the field of digital preservation of scientific results, from primary data to published articles
