The Sarahs
"The Sarah Lawrence College International Audio Fiction Award, aka The Sarahs, celebrates the best audio fiction currently being made around the world. Every year, our judges will choose three winners. The winners will receive cash prizes—1st place $2,000, 2nd place, $1,000, 3rd place $500 and Best New Artist $250—at the award ceremony and be featured on our Serendipity podcast. The award is sponsored by Sarah Lawrence College, an academic institution that fosters experimentation and playful creativity. Sarah Lawrence College has cultivated the talent of visionaries like Yoko Ono, Meredith Monk, J.J. Abrams, Alice Walker, and many others. The Sarahs —like The Oscars, The Tonys, The Bessies—honor the best of the best. It’s time for audio fiction to have its own red carpet."

The Story Collider
"Science surrounds us. Even when we don't notice it, science touches almost every part of our lives. At the Story Collider, we believe that everyone has a story about science—a story about how science made a difference, affected them, or changed them on a personal and emotional level. We find those stories and share them in live shows and on our podcast. Sometimes, it's even funny."

Science is only human – my talk on bad behaviour | Not Exactly Rocket Science | Discover Magazine
"I did so at Bristol University last Friday, in a talk entitled “Science is only human”. The brief  from Professor Phil Langton, who invited me, was to shake the graduate students out of an early reverie of the scientific process, and discuss why that process sometimes fails. Here’s the description: The ideal, perhaps naive, conception of science is a self-correcting  march towards greater truth and understanding about the world around us. In practice, it’s done and published by people, and people can be  influenced by ego, motivated by power and swayed by personal biases. Science writer Ed Yong will talk about how this tension affects the conduct of science, its communication in the mainstream press, and how the internet is changing things for the better."

Wheel of Stars
You are watching, and listening to, a musical clock made of stars.
To make this, I downloaded public data from Hipparcos, a satellite launched by the European Space Agency in 1989 that accurately measured over a hundred thousand stars. The data I downloaded contains position, parallax, magnitude, and color information, among other things.
I used this information to plot the brightest stars, and cause them to revolve about Polaris (the North Star) very slowly, as the stars appear to do. Like the night sky, this is a sidereal time clock -- it takes nearly 24 hours for the stars to fully rotate. You'll notice some familiar constellations, such as the Big Dipper in there. As the stars cross zero and 180 degrees, indicated by the center line, the clock plays an individual note, or chime for each star.

Photosounder.com - Image-sound editor & synthesizer
Photosounder is a one-of-a-kind image-sound editing program. It is unique in that it opens images and sounds indiscriminately, treats and processes them as images, and synthesizes them as sounds. Sounds, once turned into images, can be powerfully modified to achieve effects and results that couldn't be obtained in any other way, while images of all sorts reveal the infinite kinds of otherworldly sounds they contain. Ultimately, knowing how sounds look and how images sound, you'll be able to create images that sound like what you want to hear, or like what you couldn't imagine to hear.

Sacred Modernities: Rethinking Modernity in a Post-Secular Age – conference page
The aim of this conference is to take stock of these transformations in the context of what is often referred to as a ‘post-secular’ age comprised of ‘multiple modernities’. Its agenda is emphatically interdisciplinary and welcomes scholars from the fields of history, sociology, cultural studies, theology, and others. In the same spirit, the conference adopts a broad, abundant understanding of the term ‘sacred’ to encompass not only formal religious worldviews, but also that which, in whatever fashion, disturbs, complicates, and perhaps abolishes, the distinction between the sacred and the secular.
