On the Impurity of Dragon-kind - Marie Brennan
Most boys in my position—or rather, most newly-minted young men—choose to discourse upon a familiar subject, such as the origin of our sacred holidays. But as many of you know, my mother is Lady Trent, the dragon naturalist. As such, I find myself drawn instead to a passage from the Book of Priests, on the impurity of dragon-kind.

Novice Theo was not supposed to hate. He was expected to feel some negativity, of course, but he was not supposed to. Purging that was part of his novitiate training, burning away everything but love for and devotion to the Great Tetratheon that blessed their land. He had been with the Brothers for ten years now, and he had entered freely, wanting nothing but the serenity and discipline that a life of godly service promised to bring him. He wanted to be pure of heart and spirit. He yearned for that inner peace, earned through deep contemplation, which he could then reflect outwardly to better the entire world.

But oh, he hated Novice Clarence.

What is the Business of the Church? – Jeremy Yoder
As a pastor, I am tempted by Elwood Yoder’s pastoral and pleasant description of a church meeting. I also sometimes experience controversy fatigue. But I reject Yoder’s implication that sexual abuse and LGBTQ inclusion are not an essential business of the church. When we treat people as if they are side issues or problems that the church can choose to ignore, we no longer follow the Jesus Christ who ate with prostitutes and healed lepers. When we ignore those whose identities and experiences make us uncomfortable, we no longer follow the Jesus who healed on the Sabbath and outraged the priests and Pharisees. When we choose our comfort zone as the basis of ministry, we no longer follow the Jesus Christ who died on the cross and told us to pick up our own crosses to follow him.

Corpus Grace - William Broom
He had lived in secrecy for so long that he had forgotten what it was like to see the open plain in the daylight. When the one-eyed girl had found him, he had been hiding in a ger, squeezed into a stifling gap between the inner and outer walls. The herdsmen who he was visiting had put him there because they thought the approaching rider was an Imperial spy. They shouted at her, “Go away, mountain girl, go! There are no priests here.” But when he heard her say: “I have come from Kou,” he had wriggled out of the secret space and showed himself. Only something very dire could have brought her here to find him, a hundred miles away from the mountains of her home. And because she came from Kou, he had known at once that the saint must be in danger.

His encounters with the “kite people” will cause him to doubt his whole worldview however when the aliens start dying and escalating tensions between religious extremists threatens to destroy the colony’s peace. “When Stars Are Scattered” is a moving story about alien contact, religious intolerance, and the redemptive power of the divine channeled through the spirit. Further Arguments in Support of Yudah Cohen’s Proposal to Bluma Zilberman - Rebecca Fraimow
Dear Bluma,

I heard that Hershel Schmulewitz, that blockhead, has also presumed to ask for your hand in marriage, which gives you two proposals to consider. Now, you needn’t worry that this will be a sentimental or a wheedling sort of letter. You already know how I feel, and I suppose Hershel’s not so much of a blockhead that he doesn’t feel the same way. I’m simply writing to lay out the reasons, plainly and concisely, why it would certainly be more to your benefit to marry me.

Cultural rituals and the christmaspocalypse - kerrypolka
Seriously what do cultural rituals do anyway

Here is my favourite ever definition of religion, which is from Reza Aslan's No god but God, a really good and accessible overview and analysis of Islam:

"Religion, it must be understood, is not faith. Religion is the story of faith. It is an institutionalized system of symbols and metaphors (read rituals and myths) that provides a common language with which a community of faith can share with each other their numinous encounter with the Divine Presence."

(I would modify this to strike "the Divine Presence" and replace it with "heavy shit nobody totally understands" and "faith" with "FEELINGS". "YOU WOULD", I hear several of you saying. Yes, I would!)

when the sun came up we had no place to hide - magneticwave
Many thanks to this soulbonds prompt thread, which was like “hey, how about soulbonds for fantasy plot reasons?” and I was in turn inspired to write something with no plot and only moderate fantasy elements.

I have two warnings for this story! First, it has the approximate historical accuracy of A Knight’s Tale. Second, in the formation of this piece of delightful trash romp, I extremely bastardized Christianity, splitting it up into a group that worships Mary Magdalene and Saint Peter as the protectors of soulmates and another for asexuals that follows ace Jesus.

The Violence of Mennonite Process: Finding the Address of the Present (part 1 of 2) - Stephanie Krehbiel
In 2009, I started a doctoral program in American Studies at the University of Kansas, with a plan to study what, on a good day, I call “the conflicts around sexual diversity in the Mennonite church,” and what, on a bad day, I call, “Mennonites and their f*#ked-up sex problems.” I have also resorted to the fast and efficient descriptor “LGBTQ issues in the Mennonite church,” because the phrase “sexual diversity,” outside of LGBTQ and academic circles, often leads to a “come again?” But increasingly I feel allergic to the word “issues.” Mennonites use that word like a armored shield against people whose actual bodies they’re afraid of. The further I get into this, the more “f*#ked-up sex problems” seems like the way to go.

From Where Do We Know The Requirement To Build A Barricade? - Lanna Michaels (lannamichaels)
Rav Enjolras said in the name of Lamarque: "They will come one and all, they will come when we call." Had it only been "they will come", one might think it means that they will come when it pleases them. But "one and all" means they will all come. Is it possible that all can agree on a proper time? No, therefore, "they will come when we call." Is it possible for one man to force the participation of all? There is not a power on Earth to achieve this! But there is in Heaven. Therefore, "they will come one and all, they will come when we call" means there is a requirement for everyone to build a barricade.

I tried writing it, but quickly realized that it was just way too big for me. Like, if I actually tried to do it justice it would take me years, and I don't really have that sort of work ethic. So it became a not!fic. Yay?

Bookshops of Heaven, by jo walton

"This is the Heaven I wish I could believe in."
I dreamed I went to Heaven, once, and in the bookshop there

Even though I’ve all the Renault, even though it isn’t fair,
Even though I know there won’t be any more.
