#16 Chinese Web Novels Launch Gold Rush for Adaptation Rights
Only one month into its run, a new supernatural drama series called Guardian (镇魂, pronounced zhèn hún) has crossed a billion total views, and cemented a claim as the biggest show of the summer. Guardian’s inescapable popularity cannot be attributed to its screenwriting, costume design, or cinematography (which are all panned on movie review site Douban, where the show has a middling 6.5/10 rating), nor even to the good looks and charisma of its two lead actors (who have both been propelled to stardom in record speed). Rather, its success builds on its previous life as a popular homoerotic web novel, published online in 106 chapters by an author known to fans only as “Priest.”
In fact, Guardian is just the latest output of an increasingly common production pipeline that converts stories from China’s sprawling digital serial fiction ecosystem into high-profile media properties.

A quoi sert GitHub ?

Bastei Lübbe AG: Unplanned write-down at subsidiary oolipo AG burdens the result in the second quarter
Bastei Lübbe AG (ISIN DE000A1X3YY0) announces that - oolipo - the streaming platform for reading content, developed with considerable financial efforts, has far from reached the expected and necessary user numbers until the present day. At the same time, the search for new investors to drive forward the needed further development of the platform has been unsuccessful up to now. Upon agreement with the Supervisory Board, the Management Board of Bastei Lübbe AG, therefore, decided not to invest any further funds into the project and to undertake an unscheduled write-down.

The non-cash write-down on the intangible assets of its subsidiary oolipo AG will extraordinarily impact the consolidated EBIT of the Group in the second quarter of the current financial year in the amount of approximately EUR 3 million. Over the next months, the Management Board will consider the possibility of differently using or exploiting the developed technology.

The Management Board team of Bastei Lübbe AG, led by CEO Carel Halff, will consider the strategic direction of the Group in detail over the coming months, focusing on operational opportunities and risks, and adapt or refine the business strategy in close agreement with the Supervisory Board.

A Serial Publishing Platform That Earns Money for Indie Creators | Jane Friedman
Last year, a new startup, Tapas Media, joined the US digital publishing scene, hoping to offer a viable business model and distribution platform for authors and publishers to profit from serialization.

On the reader-facing side, Tapas offers bite-sized stories and the ability to try any story free before purchasing or “unlocking” installments. To unlock new installments, a reader might invite friends to read, watch ads, complete some other offer, or simply wait.

The platform has more than 1.6 million readers, primarily in North America. Since its launch in October 2012, Tapas Media has gathered about 23,000 creators; readers spend about 30 minutes per month reading in the app, and they open the app about 20 times per month. Headquartered in San Francisco and Seoul, Tapas has received more than $5 million in funding to date.

Not many American authors are familiar with Tapas Media, probably because it first gained its foothold in South Korea—plus, its primary niche has been comics. However, I’ve been particularly interested in Tapas because of the way it might help monetize serials or short works through a mobile and web platform—kind of like Wattpad, with some e-commerce and gamification added.

Bonnier's New Self-Publishing Platform, Type & Tell
Something you may hear about at the London Book Fair is the launch of a new platform for self-publishing. It’s actually the English-language edition of a well-tested Swedish site from Bonnier, Type & Tell.

Some publishing corporations have acquired existing self-publishing services—as in Macmillan’s purchase last year of Pronoun in the States. Bonnier’s team, under the supervision of chief digital officer Anki Ahrnell, has created its own self-publishing platform with interesting distinctions.

Led by Bonnier Books Ventures chief Rebecka Leffler, Type & Tell’s initial Swedish site has been quietly growing longer than you may think, since autumn 2015. The English edition of the site is launching during LBF, and you’ll find the Type & Tell stand at 1F50E.

Medium's pivot catches publishing partners by surprise- POLITICO Media
On Wednesday, Medium co-founder Evan Williams announced in a blog post that the publishing platform would abandon its strategy to sell native advertising against premium publishers’ content and instead work on finding a new business model for online publishing.

“We had started scaling up the teams to sell and support products that were, at best, incremental improvements on the ad-driven publishing model, not the transformative model we were aiming for … We are shifting our resources and attention to defining a new model for writers and creators to be rewarded, based on the value they’re creating for people,” Williams wrote in a post on Medium.

As part of the strategic pivot, Medium will lay off 50 staffers and close its satellite offices in New York and Washington. It will also stop selling “Promoted Stories,” its native ad unit, and distributing revenue from those sales to publishers.

Stencila, at its heart, is an open source platform for creating smart, living, documents. Today, most researchers use tools like Excel to summarise data sets and copy and paste static images into Word documents to send to publishers. This is fallible for many reasons, but perhaps the most interesting is that the data and the processing of that data are not knowable from looking at the jpeg in the word document. So auditing and building upon the results is difficult - the well known problems of reproducibility that many are trying to solve.

Shelf Awareness for Monday, April 4, 2016 | Shelf Awareness
"From the beginning I realized that indie bookstore customers are buying digital audiobooks, but they're not buying them from their local indie bookstores," said Mark Pearson, the co-founder of Libro.fm. Although the Seattle, Wash., company has been around for close to three years, it wasn't until last month that it began doing what it was created for: providing independent booksellers a platform through which they can sell digital audiobooks to their customers. (For several years, downloadable audio has been one of the fastest-growing book categories; at the same time, CD audio sales have been declining.)

Libro.fm's Indie Partner Program is simple: indie bookstores can set up co-branded audiobook online storefronts at no charge. Customers can then browse that storefront on their devices, including tablets, laptops, desktops and smartphones (at the moment, the Libro.fm app is available only for iOS; an Android version will be available in the next few weeks). Each page on the storefront features that store's name and logo, and stores can also choose to write custom messages for their customers. All Libro.fm audiobooks are DRM-free and can be listened to through the free Libro.fm app.

How Hummingbird Is Democratizing Ebook Retailing | Digital Book World
Imagine a world in which anyone can sell ebooks and compete successfully with Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble. That’s the world Hummingbird Digital Media hopes to make a reality.

Hummingbird, a subsidiary of American West Books, was born when Stephen Blake Mettee, Hummingbird’s president, and his colleagues became inspired at BookExpo America.

“We recognized that three companies had a lock on ebook sales and everyone else was shut out,” says Mettee. “My son, Joshua Mettee, owner of American West Books, and our partner Christopher Robbins and I started talking about a way to change that.”

“Independent bookstores and others had dipped their toes into the ebook retailing market, but they hadn’t embraced less robust solutions for one reason or another,” Mettee continues. “This told us there was a need yet to be filled.”

After contemplating the idea for a couple months, Hummingbird formed and partnered with a 15-year-old company, Papertrell, to supply the technology for Hummingbird’s platform.

#Quantum16: The Philippines: How Wattpad turned online fiction into a multimedia phenomenon. – Heather Writes
While Wattpad has attracted millions of users across the world, the impact it’s had on the Philippines is something else. Porter Anderson led the Twitter chat with Ashleigh Gardner of Wattpad, and Christine and Francis of Summit Books, to delve into the impact its had on the country. So let’s begin with the platform itself. “Every month over 40 million people use Wattpad,” explains Ashleigh, “with a new user joining each second. Those 40 million people are writing *A LOT*, with over 24 hours of reading added to Wattpad every minute. Last month, people spent 13 billion minutes on Wattpad at an average of 30 minutes per user, per session.” Where does the Philippines come into this? “The Philippines is Wattpad’s 2nd largest community with 5 million people.” More so, it seems one of the most popular evocations of Wattpad material there is in TV shows, like:

Will digital books ever replace print? – Craig Mod –
ons happen? I don’t know. But I do know that print has endured and continues to endure for good reason. Our relationships to our most meaningful books are long and textured. Content Licensing is Key to Wattpad's Future - Publishing Perspectives
Wattpad may not yet be at that level, but it is starting to take off. In 2012, Wattpad made headlines when it licensed the works of then 18-year-old Abigale Gibb’s Twilight-inspired novel, The Dark Heroine, to HarperCollins for a six-figure sum. This was followed up last year when Wattpad licensed Anna Todd’s novel, After, to Simon & Schuster in a four-book deal estimated to be worth half a million dollars. Wattpad then enlisted talent agency UTA to represent film and TV rights for the novel, which were picked up by Paramount Pictures. More recently, the company has begun working with Cosmopolitan magazine to syndicate content through the magazine’s website; and the company has also helped some of its most popular writers host crowdfunding campaigns to help them get their books into print. Helping existing Wattpad writers get traditionally published is part the company’s agenda, and they’ve seen traditional deals happen for writers throughout Latin America, France, Spain and Asia.

The Bloomsbury way | The Bookseller
Bloomsbury Publishing’s full-year results, published today, show how different bits of the publishing market are transitioning to digital at different rates, and with differing results. Its trade e-book sales fell year-on-year, but digital sales at its professional and academic businesses accelerated as it was able to expand with new business models. Bloomsbury reported that sales of digital titles in its academic and professional division grew by 35% year on year to £4.2m, more than double the overall industry growth rate in 2014. They now represent 12% of total revenues in the division (2014: 10%). Bloomsbury noted that its digital strategy reflected the changing needs of scholars, students and librarians. In September 2014 it launched a new e-book platform, Bloomsbury Collections, to deliver online collections of scholarly e-books for the institutional market on a subscription and perpetual-access basis. The site has approximately 4,000 titles (...)

Kickstarter Breathes New Life Into Completed Campaign Pages | GalleyCat
Kickstarter is a great way to raise money for creative projects. But up until now, the project pages have only been good as long as the campaign is live, making them slightly obsolete once a project has been funded. That has changed. The crowd funding site has introduced Spotlight, a new way to update project pages for projects that have already been funded. The idea is to help creators continue to showcase their work beyond the funding phase and into the production, distribution and sales phases. It makes a lot of sense considering that Kickstarter pages are often in the top search results for projects funded by the site, and these mini web sites include a lot of details about a project.

Google Enters the Collaborative Economy in a Big Way | Web Strategy by Jeremiah Owyang | Digital Business
Here comes Google, with a series of five market moves injecting them as a central player for the collaborative economy. Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information. But it doesn’t just start and stop there. They also want to organize the world’s logistics, commerce, local transportation, service economy, and even how people obtain and receive loans. In the past, our perspective of the Collaborative Economy has been through startups, like Airbnb, oDesk, Lyft, Uber and Lending Club that enable people to get what they need from each other, using commonly available technologies like online marketplaces and mobile apps. Today, Google has entered the Collaborative Economy with a series of announcements that leave a casual reader scratching their. But placing the announcements line by line, you can see an organized attempt to enter this space traditionally dominated by early stage startups.

JellyBooks Launches Google Analytics for eBooks at DBW 2015 ⋆ The Digital Reader
The hot story at the DBW conference today was an early demo of ebook startup JellyBooks' new ebook analytics project. Andrew Rhomberg, founder and CEO of Jellybooks, revealed in his presentation this afternoon that JellyBooks is now working on a platform which will encourage readers to allow themselves to be tracked in exchange for free ebooks and other rewards. Publishers have long been seeking more info on how readers interact with ebooks, but with most of the data locked up in retailer platforms they've had to turn to 3rd-party startups like Hiptype, smaller retailers like Bilbary, and now JellyBooks. Jellybooks platform is still in beta, but when it is more widely available it will collect data on a user's reading habits. According to my notes, Jellybooks will be able to track the amount of time spent reading, the font size, device used, the links clicked, and which app the user is reading in and when it is opened/closed.

The tales teens tell: what Wattpad did for girls | Technology | The Observer
“Publishers are increasingly aware of Wattpad and novellas and fan fiction and they are certainly keeping an eye on it,” says Charlotte Eyre, children’s editor at The Bookseller. “Publishers want the best books and if they find great writing talent on Wattpad, why not? They are very aware that teenagers read and write [on the website] and also that teenagers aren’t big readers of eBooks. I think it’s fantastic and more publishers should do it.” Eyre also notes that yearly collaborations between publishers, such as Wattpad and its competitor Hot Key, are common, something I’m more than ready to try my luck at.

Rap Genius rebrands itself 'Genius' as part of mission to 'annotate the world' | The Verge
Rap Genius is ditching the "rap" part of its name. The company that started as a website where users could annotate and explain hip-hop lyrics is about much more than music these days. It's now a platform (or "knowledge project" in the words of its bumptious co-founders) that lets visitors share their interpretations of poetry, current news headlines, and a growing list of "everything else." So its creators have decided that it's time for a name that mirrors their ambitious focus. "Genius does for everything what Rap Genius did for rap," Ben Horowitz, an early Rap Genius investor, said in a statement today. Describing the internet as "the greatest store of knowledge in human history," co-founders Tom Lehman and Ilan Zechory claim that people often gloss over the web's content "without ever diving in." Thats where Genius and its annotations come in, apparently. "We believe that an internet that is Genius-powered will help us all realize the richness and depth in every line of text." The company wants to see "Genius" morph into a verb used between friends in the same way "Google" did.

Web Fiction, Serialized and Social
The Internet long ago revamped publishing and bookselling. Now technology is transforming the writing of fiction, previously the most solitary and exacting of arts, into something nearly the opposite. It is social, informal and intimate, with the results not only consumed but often composed on the fly.

Wattpad is a leader in this new storytelling environment, with more than two million writers producing 100,000 pieces of material a day for 20 million readers on an intricate international social network.

Inkshares wants to create a hybrid of traditional book publisher and crowdfunded digital platform — Tech News and Analysis
As with so many other media and publishing-related businesses, the book industry has been massively disrupted by the internet, to the point where an increasing number of authors have found success by avoiding the traditional publishing system altogether. But is the old-fashioned publisher model totally without value? The founders of Inkshares don’t think so — which is why they are trying to create a kind of hybrid platform that combines the benefits of crowdfunding with some of the services that traditional publishers have offered in the past.

Intel Acquired Kno (for More Than Just Their Digital Textbooks) - The Digital Reader
TechCrunch is pitching this deal as being focused on the educational content market, or more specifically the 225,000 interactive textbook titles that Kno sells on behalf of 75 publishers. I don’t think that is quite what Intel is interested in.

It’s my guess that Intel has a broader interest than just textbooks. Look over their website and you’ll see that they aren’t just focused on selling hardware; they pitch a complete solution. Their educational division is akin to NewsCorp’s Amplify, which is a platform consisting of hardware plus software plus a half dozen different types of academic content besides textbooks.

Twitter Co-Founder Evan Williams Lays Out His Plan For The Future Of Media | TechCrunch
Though Medium doesn’t have a solid business plan yet, there is a method to the madness of thinking about product first and money second (or third). Williams has a fascinating way of grouping business types in Silicon Valley between those who successfully managed companies through the dot-com bust (“Web People”) and those who packed up their empty bags and left (“Dot-com People”). He explains that Web People “loved the web. We loved what was possible and we loved the creativity and we were in it to create; we weren’t in it to make money.” So, when the bubble burst, Web People stayed — some ultimately making the (very) profitable products we all use today. “The Web People are more sustainable because they kept going. Because they’re driven to create, they’re attracted to the web because of its creative potential. They weren’t scared away when it seemed like it wasn’t an instant path to riches.” he explains, “They were persistent.”

Waterstones founder to launch Spotify-like service for books in 2013 - SlashGear

Read Petite will specialize in short stories and serialized content. Serialized content was big in the 19th century with novelists like Charles Dickens and others publishing novels chapter by chapter in newspapers and magazines. The problem for authors today is that short stories are hard to sell in physical formats.

High-quality PDF-to-EPUB conversion - Tools of Change for Publishing
How many times have you opened an ebook and noticed awkward hyphenations or other conversion errors? I still see this in the majority of the ebooks I buy and it’s clear these are the result of someone not paying attention during the conversion process. They may be minor annoyances but they reflect poorly on the publishers who produce them.

I recently had a chance to talk about this problem with Patrick Martinent, the CTO at Newgen KnowledgeWorks. They have a terrific platform called Silk Evolve that helps automate and reduce the errors when going from PDF to EPUB. The following Q&A is a preview to what you can expect to hear in Patrick’s session at next month’s TOC NY conference.

What does an open-source book publishing platform look like? We’re about to find out
McGuire’s long-term vision for the future of books is that they will become Web-native products, with ebooks and print books as corollaries to what exists on the open Web. With the power of the open Web at their disposal, perhaps books can move beyond the closed-garden limitations – lack of sharing, no annotations, linear layouts – that have been carried over from the era of the hardback, as my editor Adam Penenberg discussed in a recent article.

Today, the world got a glimpse of what a Web-based ebook might look like, with the New York Times publishing a feature about avalanches that displays the story in a single column of text, but with HTML5 native video, motion graphics, and something similar to parallax scrolling providing a rich and lightweight experience. The feature was the first of six chapters that the Times is publishing in instalments.

Pinterest Removes Ban on Commercial Use as It Adds Business Accounts - Liz Gannes - Commerce - AllThingsD
On a site where people share pictures of stuff they want to buy, it makes sense that people who make stuff would want to share it themselves. And so Pinterest is full of businesses posting their own content and products.
The company is formally acknowledging this kind of use by adding business accounts. As of today, business users and normal users will have separate tools and terms.
What’s remarkable is that prior to now, commercial usage of Pinterest was prohibited, according to its terms of service.
But Pinterest is tacitly acknowledging this history of usage by allowing users to transfer their existing accounts to business accounts. It’s also taking the opportunity to brag about how it drives all sorts of traffic and recruits new customers for businesses like Etsy, Jetsetter and Allrecipes, via case studies posted on a new business site.

Kindle Remorse: Will consumers ever regret ebook platform lock-in? - Tools of Change for Publishing
Today, when a person decides which e-reader or tablet they’re going to buy, they’re also committing to the online retailer to supply books and other content.

You could argue that Amazon and B&N; are making the decision less painful by offering reader apps on all popular platforms (e.g., Mac, Windows, Android, iOS). So the Kindle ebook you buy from Amazon can be read just about any modern device.

But what if Apple decides they’re tired of Amazon customers buying ebooks outside iOS and reading them on an iOS-powered device? Maybe Apple removes the Kindle app from their platform. (It could happen.) Or what if Amazon has a falling out with Google and the Kindle app disappears from all Android devices? You could replace “Amazon” with “B&N;” in either of those examples and have the same problem.

Platforming Books — by Craig Mod
And so, in the last two years a simple, strong truth has emerged: The future of books is built upon networked platforms, not islands. More than any surface advancement — interface, navigational, typographic, or similar — platforms define how we read going forward. Platforms shape systems — those of production, consumption, distribution — and all critical changes happening in digital books and publishing happen within systems. Post-artifact books and publishing2 is not just about text on screens.

13 ways of looking at Medium, the new blogging/sharing/discovery platform from @ev and Obvious » Nieman Journalism Lab
Medium is a new online publishing platform from Obvious Corp. It launched yesterday. Obvious is the most recent iteration of the company that created Blogger, Odeo, and Twitter. Blogger was the outfit that, until it was bought up by Google, did the most to enable the early-2000s blogging boom. Odeo was a podcasting service that never really took off — 20 percent ahead of its time, 80 percent outflanked by Apple. Twitter — well, you’ve heard of Twitter.

Ev Williams, the key figure at every stage, tweeted about Medium yesterday in a way that slotted it right into the evolutionary personal-publishing chain he and his colleagues have enabled: Let’s try this again!

5 Reasons Why Web Publishing is Changing (Again)
We're witnessing another sea change in Web publishing. From Pinterest at the beginning of this year to the launch this week of a new product from two Twitter founders, Medium, 2012 has been a year where the norms of publishing are being challenged. It wasn't that long ago that Tumblr and Wordpress were the cutting edge of publishing. But there's a new edge and it's populated by the likes of Medium (a kind of categorized Tumblr), Branch (the sister site of Medium, for discussions), App.net (a microblogging platform) and Svbtle (an elite network of indie bloggers). In this post we identify five key drivers for this new wave of publishing services.

Report: 8 Trends, 9 E-book Platforms Shaping a Market | Publishing Perspectives
“The core of it is quite simple: When we asked the question, ‘Which companies are developing e-book authoring platforms or offering independent authors e-book production services an answer?’ there wasn’t an answer. Everyone we asked (mind you — these were executives in the publishing, e-book retail and technology communities as well as authors) said the same thing — ‘I don’t know. Lots of them. When you find the list, will you share it with me?’

“This report seeks only to begin answering this question. Our intent is to provide insight on a highly dynamic market and its participants — the organizations that are actively shaping the publishing and ebook markets.

Bob Stein: "Build conversations around books" | FutureBook
Stein, like many among the digerati, is clearly irked by the big publishers' unwillingness to disrupt their own business models and invest in real innovation. But he is clear-eyed about how to make it happen. "This is not a money problem. You take the very best and brightest young kids you can hire, put them in an office, do not connect them to the legacy business, and let them do something exciting. But don't give them any money. The reason it won't happen is that publishers want the smart people to buy the next big book."

Will publishers heed his advice this time around? "People think I'm nuts," he says. But he was right before, and he might be right again.
