The Comics Giant Behind Wonder Woman Is Accused Of Promoting An Editor After Women Accused Him Of Sexual Harassment
Liz Gehrlein Marsham had been working at DC Comics for less than three weeks when she said a veteran editor named Eddie Berganza cornered her, stuck his tongue in her mouth, and attempted to grope her. Within an industry that has created some of the most influential American fiction serving as the basis for blockbuster films, TV shows, and video games, Berganza has become notorious for the contrast between his personal conduct and professional success. While Berganza’s misconduct is alleged to have occurred years ago, with no fresh accusations suggesting he continues this behavior, the recent reckonings of powerful Hollywood figures like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey have emboldened more victims across more industries to tell their stories. The result was a workforce deeply invested in jobs that felt increasingly precarious — especially in an industry as small and insular as comics, where DC and Marvel are referred to as "The Big Two," meaning the main and largest publishers. A week after WonderCon, on March 26, the industry blog Bleeding Cool published a blind item about a "senior comic book figure" who’d tried to make out with the partner of one of his freelance employees in a hotel lobby.

The academic handmaiden’s tale | The Thesis Whisperer
The difficulty of recognising, and calling out, sexual assault and harrassment is part of what makes it so pernicious in our culture – and one of the many reasons why most of it is unreported. In over a decade of working with PhD students at multiple universities I have only had a handful of people disclose sexual harassment to me, but I have no doubt that’s the tip of the iceberg. And what are we supposed to make of the way some academic men seem to treat their female colleagues and students as a combination of surrogate girlfriends and help-meet? Just this week a young woman told me how her lab leader treated her like an unpaid servant, expecting her to organise his diary, take phone calls and do other kinds of secretarial paper work. I’m sure some people will object to me making any kind of connection between sexual assault, micro-aggressions and excessive demands on women’s time and emotional capacities, but they all abuses of power and position that are just not OK.

Half of all Australian university students 'harassed' - BBC News
The Australian Human Rights Commission report also found that almost 7% of students were sexually assaulted on at least one occasion in 2015 or 2016. Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins said the report painted a "disturbing" picture of university life. "One in five of those who were sexually assaulted said that this occurred at a university or residence social event," said Ms Jenkins. A university setting was defined as on campus, at an event organised or endorsed by the institution, or on technology - such as the internet - where perpetrators were university-related. "The report indicates that about 1.6% of students are sexually assaulted in a university setting nationally - there is only one acceptable number and that is zero," he said.

'My university failed me': Survivors come forward with stories of sexual assault
Ms Duncan has referred her case to the South Australian Police through its Royal Commission branch and has taken her story public ahead of the release of the world's largest survey into sexual assault. Figures obtained under freedom of information laws by Sunday Night, seen by Fairfax Media, show up to 20 per cent of complaints of sexual assault at the University of NSW between 2010 and 2016 involved staff. At the University of Western Sydney, a male staff member who had five sexual harassment complaints made by female students was suspended before being issued a warning when he returned to work. In May, despite receiving a petition signed by thousands, the University of Tasmania refused to remove a former high school teacher turned PhD candidate who had been convicted of child exploitation and of maintaining a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student. All universities have since introduced sweeping changes into how they deal with sexual assault, including training hundreds of staff and launching complaint portals, while funding a national 1800 hotline.

KING: What happens when toxic white masculinity floods our gov't - NY Daily News
In modern American history, no man has been more openly insulting, cruel, demeaning, dishonest, bigoted, sexist, misogynistic and xenophobic, even admitting that he used his wealth and privilege to sexually assault women at will, boldly claiming that he could murder someone in the middle of a busy New York intersection — and not only do so without consequence, but actually be celebrated and elected President in the face of it all. In May, which in the era of Trump seems like years ago, but was only two months back, then Republican candidate for Congress Greg Gianforte literally assaulted a reporter from The Guardian — body slamming him, then punching him. Again, how could the Republican Party ever even attempt to pretend like they care about what Gianforte did or try to hold him accountable, when the man they elected President of the United States openly admitted to even worse? I almost forgot at the end of June when Trump targeted and harassed MSNBC reporter Mika Brzezinski in a series of tweets insulting her intelligence and alleging she was bleeding from plastic surgery. Campus intellectual diversity in the age of polarization (essay)
While marching across the stage, a few dozen graduates managed to express their disappointment that the administration in general and the president (me) in particular weren’t as progressive as they would like on issues such as sexual assault, divestment from fossil fuels and support for underrepresented groups. As families milled about after the ceremonies, taking pictures, sharing hugs and high fives, I was suddenly called out by an angry voice: “You annihilated my existence,” yelled a middle-aged man. I had recently encountered pushback from some on the other end of the political spectrum when I published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal calling for an affirmative action program for conservative ideas on campuses. When fraternity brothers are disturbed by university restrictions on how they organize parties, they find a new rallying cry in bemoaning “political correctness.” When middle-aged veterans of college protests of yesteryear no longer see their own battles and slogans repeated by today’s students, they complain about PC culture undermining free speech. Those who point out the dangers of big government, emphasize the needs of national security in an age of terrorism, extol the virtues of family and religion, or defend free speech deserve intellectual engagement -- not insult and irony.

A Systematic Look at a Serial Problem: Sexual Harassment of Students by University Faculty by Nancy Chi Cantalupo, William C. Kidder :: SSRN
One in ten female graduate students at major research universities reports being sexually harassed by a faculty member. Taking advantage of recent advances in data availability, this article represents the most comprehensive effort to inventory and analyze actual faculty sexual harassment cases. This review includes nearly three hundred cases obtained from: (1) media reports; (2) federal civil rights investigations by the U.S. Rather, most of the cases reviewed for this study involved faculty alleged to have engaged in unwelcome physical contact ranging from groping to sexual assault to domestic abuse-like behaviors. Cantalupo, Nancy Chi and Kidder, William C., A Systematic Look at a Serial Problem: Sexual Harassment of Students by University Faculty (May 20, 2017).

This is Our Fault. We are Responsible. | ashe dryden
>Every time someone is physically or sexually assaulted in our spaces and they dare to stand up for themselves, they are told to prove it. Their experiences only become valid when someone within our trusted circles witnesses it. We stand by the abusers instead of by the abused.

>Every time someone is dismissed with a racial slur and decides they can't take it one more time and speak out, they are called troublemakers, complainers, and lazy. We tell them they are only in our spaces to "meet quotas" and "be PC".

>Every time any marginalized person speaks up about something that affects them and are rightfully angry, we police their words instead of our communities where these problems fester.

>We say nothing and are enabling it to happen over and over again. We're telling bystanders that this behavior is acceptable. We tell them that there are no consequences for their actions. We tell them that their right to abuse or oppress someone else takes precedence over someone else's right to purely exist in our spaces.

>Don't think we don't notice you looking the other way. We know what you're saying when you say nothing.

>Do you?
