Meet a Professional Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master from New York City | WIRED
One of Timm Woods’ most precious possessions looks like something you’d find in the basement of a derelict castle, or maybe at a back-of-the-mall magic shop: It’s a notebook bound in leatherlike skin, covered with an upside-down, faux-gold keyhole and filled with handwritten, eraser-dusted passages featuring titles like “Ravenloft” and “Attack on Myth Drannor.” His DM performances—and being a dungeon master is a kind of performance—are often marked by excitable narration and winkingly melodramatic theatrics; at one point during tonight’s game, he gleefully pounds a hand into a fist, mimicking an arrow’s impact on an opponent. In recent years, older players have begun dusting off their Starter Sets, while curious younglings who’ve endured marathon binges of Stranger Things or Minecraft (or who caught 2011’s infamous D&D-centric episode of Community ) were inspired to seek out the game that all but redefined how a collaborative, hands-on narrative could work. But, as is also often the case with the intensely smart, Timm Woods preferred to go solo, spending hours designing D&D games, memorizing the famous conflicts and campaigns, poring over articles in Dungeon magazine, and learning hundreds of character names and powers. “I need to be acting as though we’re just a group of friends playing D&D, because that’s the experience everybody wants.” During the sessions, it’s not unusual for him to rise from his seat to readjust some figurines or plot out a distance on the map, only to

Deodorizing the Geek Gamer – First Person Scholar
In Dungeons & Dragons , an endless and exhaustive series of rulebooks encourages players to become specialists on the rules governing their character archetypes as well as the lore of the game world. The nerd can be contrasted with the stereotypical—yet “mainstream”—jock whose hypermasculine performance of identity is often depicted within the context of a locker room or shower where grooming habits and dating tips are often shared in the same breath. The stereotype of the feminized and unkept nerd is reinforced by the Dungeons & Dragons ’ player’s deliberate attentiveness toward developing a niche and specialized community, language, and culture around the game itself—one that is both daunting and alien to the mainstream. The ideal man, although deodorized in Old Spice’s vision, is a stereotype made all the more viable by the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons which quantify and reduce bodies to numbers and categories. These gendered mechanics were an early form of gatekeeping that encouraged play by men over women—thus populating game tables across the world with the distinct scent of geek masculinity.

The Dungeons & Dragons Books that Secretly Previewed Each New Edition | DMDavid
In a convention appearance , TSR designers Dave “Zeb” Cook and Steve Winter talked about how the first-edition books that reached print in 1985 led to 2nd edition. “ Oriental Adventures was the big tipping point because Zeb Cook put a lot of really cool stuff in OA,” Winter said. Essentials aimed to recapture “that core of what makes D&D D&D, what made people fall in love with it the first time, whether it was the Red Box in 83, the original three booklets back in 74 or 75 or even 3rd edition in 2004. Those might seem like fairly simple mandates, but it can be difficult for game designers to take a step back from their work and treat it with a cold, ruthless editorial eye.” This entry was posted in Role-playing game history and tagged D&D Essentials , David Zeb Cook , Dungeoneer's Survival Guide , Gamma World , Mike Donais , Mike Mearls , Oriental Adventures , Player's Option: Combat & Tactics , Rich Baker , Rob Heinsoo , Skip Williams , Steve Winter , Tome of Battle: Book of the Nine Swords .

Why Fourth Edition Never Saved Dungeons & Dragons | DMDavid
But the lack of a tabletop forced Wizards to charge less and to scrap plans for selling digital assets like virtual miniatures and dungeon tiles. “I expect that the improvements in game play will convince even reluctant players to switch over to fourth edition,” designer Chris Perkins wrote. “The things I would have wanted to change about fourth edition mostly center on the knowledge that the class design project wasn’t entirely finished upon release,” Heinsoo said. Rather than attempting to match the strengths of online games, fifth edition offers limited, elegant rules so players can focus what makes D&D special: playing through a story created when a 5 or 6 people join together as characters in a world open to anything. Us doing that suddenly basically unlocked everyone from the dining room table and, in many ways, made it possible for the boom in streaming that we’re seeing now.” Fourth edition did more than require a grid; it dwelled on one .

How Women Are Driving the Dungeons & Dragons Renaissance | The Mary Sue
The company behind the game, Wizards of the Coast, saw a growth in sales that was about 40% over their numbers from the year before, and while it’s still early, all signs point to 2018 being even bigger. Some of the rest of those hours are from the bigger, high-profile celebrity shows like Force Grey or Critical Role , but much of it is just regular gamers sharing their experiences. “What 5th edition has done the best,” according to game designer Kate Welch, “is that idea of it being the theatre of the mind and the imagination, and to put the emphasis on the story and the world that is being created by the players.” That’s the kind of “drama people want to see,” both in their own adventures and on their screens. Narcisco adds, “I’m always surprised when I look back over what we grew up with and how we let things slip and slide the way they did, when now it’s imperative and it’s painfully obvious that those choices need to be made, and we’re in a good place to make them.” But, “at the end of the day,” Stewart says, “we’ve just got a bunch of guidelines we give in terms of inclusivity and making everyone feel welcome.”

https://geekandsundry.com/the-story-of-dd-part-two-how-wizards-of-the-coast-saved-dungeons-dragons/
Peter Adkison and future Paizo CEO Lisa Stevens flew to Lake Geneva and spent the summer of 1997 managing the company’s transition from TSR to Wizards. As the new owner of Dungeons & Dragons , Peter Adkison set out to make things right with Gary Gygax, the co-creator of D&D who had nearly been sued into oblivion by the prior management of TSR. Luke Gygax, Gary’s son who runs Gary Con , a convention in Lake Geneva devoted to honoring the memory of his late father, said, “If D&D had to move outside my family’s control, [Peter] was a great person to assume the mantle.” The payments also made it clear that Wizards of the Coast, and no one else, had claim to the intellectual property of Dungeons & Dragons , which would help Wizards later in its own sale to Hasbro. With all things settled, Wizards of the Coast was free to publish a new edition of D&D, the effects of which would change the landscape of roleplaying games significantly, and which we’ll delve into for the final part of this series. A special thanks to TSR alum and creative genius Jim Lowder for his invaluable assistance in providing background knowledge and helping to get interviews for this article.

The Uncanny Resurrection of Dungeons & Dragons
Freeman quit his job, and, shortly thereafter, in 2011, the first
customers—initially, his daughter’s friends—arrived at his pop-up board-game club and café, Brooklyn Strategist, a place where children and
their parents could sit down and play games, both classic and obscure,
over veggie platters and homemade ginger ale. (One night, it boasted “tankards of beer” and “a whole roast pig.”) In Massachusetts, snow or shine, a
series of role-playing camps called Guard Up offers children the chance to chase
each other through the fields of Burlington with foam swords and Nerf blasters, while
somehow also learning. When
mainstream American culture was largely about standing in a factory
line, or crowding into smoke-stained boardrooms for meetings, or even
dropping acid and collapsing in a field for your hundred-person “be-in,”
the idea of retiring to a dimly lit table to make up stories with three or
four friends seemed fruitless and antisocial. Now that being American
often means being alone or interacting distantly—fidgeting with
Instagram in a crosswalk, or lying prone beneath the heat of a laptop
with Netflix streaming over you—three or four people gathering in the
flesh to look each other in the eye and sketch out a world without
pixels can feel slightly rebellious, or at least pleasantly out of
place. The plotters of the
game’s fifth edition seemed to remember that D. & D.’s strength lay in
creating indulgent spaces (get lost in your gnomish identity, quest or

Both? As a woman in the hobby, it’s easy enough to...
Although I’d love to see more women and I think the hobby is moving to be more inclusive, that by itself isn’t necessarily a problem. Sometimes this is hitting on them, sometimes it’s treating them with disrespect, sometimes it’s gatekeeping and sometimes its expecting them or their players to fufill gender norms or sexual fantasies (any of the creepy sex stories you see fall into this category). It seems like any time anyone brings up the fact that D&D is mostly white men, the worse parts of the community come out swinging. It doesn’t matter if it’s a woman talking about how she was interruped, a guy suggesting more female or PoC npcs or (like in this thread) a complaint about creepy behavior, people will pop out of the woodwork to explain to you why this experience wasn’t valid. The problem is, the people “attacking” it, are usually other gamers who love the hobby and want to help everyone feel that same sense of acceptance.

Baldur’s Gender – The Campo Santo Quarterly Review
In November 2016, the comics artist Amika gave the world this gift — the list of all permitted genders in Baldur’s Gate II , the classic role-playing game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe: “The list I put on Twitter is a screencap from NearInfinity, which is a program that lets you open up and look at game files,” Amika told me. As a taxonomy of gender, this list is spectacularly esoteric, bordering on absurd poetry — a piece video game engine code Borges wishes he scripted. Not only did Brooks answer my questions, he provided me with this complete gender identity census for the Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition: Nothing else is.” (In fairness, the current 5th Edition is considerably more open-minded: “Think about how your character does or does not conform to the broader culture’s expectations of sex, gender and sexual behaviour….

Choose Monsters Based on the Story: Sly Flourish
These guidelines are much better, much easier to use, and accept the fact that, given the wide range of monster abilities within a given challenge rating, it's a loose guide at best. In the 2016 D&D Dungeon Master Survey , roughly 14% percent of respondents mentioned Kobold Fight Club as one of the top three best tools for running D&D games. If we're to use standard encounter building rules, we'd discover that we'll need some beefy NPCs to match up against a group of level 8 characters; swashbucklers, gladiators, master thiefs, and the like. Page 250 of the Dungeon Master's Guide gives us a set of guidelines for running large amounts of monsters against a smaller group of characters. We've also built a handy mob combat calculator to give us the flexibility to run battles with any number of monsters we wish just for situations like this.

Chauntea | Forgotten Realms Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia
If at any time plague or drought struck the crops, farmers looked to Chauntea, since they hoped she would save the harvest, due to her love of nature. Though she had a diverse collection of followers, Chauntea was fanatically worshiped by peasants, servants, druids, gardeners, and any others who earned pay from working on farmland. In terms of correct agricultural practice, the church advised that campaigns of replanting, prudent irrigation and crop rotation were necessary to ensure that the land was kept fertile. They postulated that these practices were an abomination to the natural world and that agriculture was not conservation but manipulation, further arguing that their sect encouraged exploitation and overpopulation. Kobold | Forgotten Realms Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia
The overcrowding has eliminated the concept of privacy, so kobolds sleep in communal areas, and nudity is not regarded as shameful or offensive, even to the opposite sex. Kobolds hold a hatred for nearly all other humanoid races and enjoy killing and torturing them, in particular brownies , gnomes , pixies and sprites . [13] They will naturally tend to hate larger creatures, and although they will show respect and obedience if required, they will always be looking for ways to display their resentment. Kobolds do not maintain monogamous relationships, and due to the importance they place on propagation, they choose mates by practical measures rather than love or other emotions. Ritual demands that the egg be taken to a sacred hatching place, and dragonwrought kobolds must be raised above ground if they are able to fly, so that they can learn to use their wings.

Kobold (Dungeons & Dragons) - Wikipedia
The kobold appears in the first edition Monster Manual (1977), [2] where it is described as a tribal creature with war bands, found in dank, dark places. They are industrious miners and if left to their own devices can carve out massive tunnel complexes, which they quickly fill to capacity thanks to their rapid rate of reproduction - which would explain their use as cannon fodder enemies. They rarely live long enough to become chieftains, but they have a great deal of power and influence, serving as mine supervisors and directing the tribe toward "divinely inspired" goals. Klobt-A-Lozn appeared in the AD&D first edition module In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords as the leader of a forgotten kobold tribe in the caverns below Drachen Keep , in the Pomarj region of the World of Greyhawk campaign setting . Tucker's kobolds became a famous part of Dungeons & Dragons lore, [28] often referred to as an example of how cunning and local knowledge can be used by physically weak opponents to overcome much more powerful adversaries.

If I recall correctly making a check like that requires using your action on your turn, unless circumstances allow / demand for you to make one. For example, you would have to use your action to try and spot the rogue who just dove ehind some bushes, and could only do so during your turn, but would be allowed a perception check to notice a meteor starting to fall from the sky at the moment it began to happen.

An appropriately equipped and well-rested party of four adventurers should be able to defeat a monster that has a challenge rating equal to its level without suffering any deaths. Special traits (which appear after a monster’s challenge rating but before any actions or reactions ) are characteristics that are likely to be relevant in a combat encounter and that require some explanation. X/Day : The notation “X/Day” means a special ability can be used X number of times and that a monster must finish a long rest to regain expended uses. I think it would be more cool if they could take some more interesting actions such as spells or special abilities, but eventually they would be too powerful within this "3 per turn" mechanics. I understand what you're saying, but I like the LA mechanic because I suspect it'll be easier to DM (at least for me) because I can keep focus on those actions per turn, instead of worrying about when in the encounter to play one of the "big three". I think it's an interesting mechanic- instead of giving the big monsters a bunch of multiple attacks, they can take their turn and take a number of additional actions spread out during the rest of the round. Overall, I would love a monster design guide to discuss how abilities are granted out when considering CR or experience.

I want to host a DND group, but none of my friends...
As long as you have a story to tell or a problem to solve, some characters within the setting, and one combat encounter prepared, you should be fine. make it clear that, when monsters are hostile, overcoming them in a way that avoids combat (e.g., by tricking them, sneaking past them, taking them out using environmental hazards or clever spell use, etc.) Unwittingly punishing outside-the-box thinking by withholding XP for cleverly circumventing combat encounters is a common newbie GM mistake. for D&D in particular, don’t tediously drag out a victory by forcing your players to grind the monsters down to their very last hit point. In general, only mindless undead and other automatons should fight to the death; everything else should flee, surrender, or attempt to parlay and offer bribes or concessions once the battle is clearly lost.

> Sort or filter monsters by name, CR, type, subtype (if any), size, alignment (if any), and whether or not the critter’s got Legendary and/or Lair abilities.
>
> You’ll note some monsters appear multiple times. That was because they have more than one subtype or alignment, and I wanted them to appear in both categories should you choose to sort them that way.
>
> As before, please feel free to download, to spread the word, whatever. And by all means, if you catch any errors, do let me know.

Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Product (1st Edition Premium Player's Handbook)
1st Edition Premium Player's Handbook
Gary Gygax
In 1974, the world changed forever when Gary Gygax introduced the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. The legacy of his innovative ideas and the extensive reach of his powerful influence can be seen in virtually every facet of gaming today.

To help honor his work and his memory, we created limited-edition reprints of the original 1st Edition core rulebooks: the Monster Manual, Player's Handbook, and Dungeon Master's Guide. These premium versions of the original AD&D rulebooks have been lovingly reprinted with the original art and content, but feature an attractive new cover design commemorating this re-release.

Your purchase of this monumental book helps support the Gygax Memorial Fund—established to immortalize the “Father of Roleplaying Games” with a memorial statue in Lake Geneva, WI.
