Visualizing Elision (A Teaching Exercise) | Josh Honn
Students were particularly struck by Gieseking’s notion of the “violence” visualization can do, and Drucker’s notion of “capta,” that data is not given, but rather taken. The discussion was fascinating, and wide-ranging, as the undergraduates represented a fairly interdisciplinary group. I won’t rehash our discussion here, but I wanted to share a short exercise I closed the class with after asking the question of visualizations, “How do we know what’s not there?”
