For personal reference, and for anyone else who's interested, because we need to be having these conversations.

Shows how many times the ground of race, gender, religion, ect has been covered in fannish discussion before, and in how many ways.

Robin Hobb's Home: The Fanfiction Rant
I am not rational on the topic of fan fiction. Well, actually, I can be, and in this essay, I will endeavor to be. But people who know me well also know that this is one topic that can make my eyes spin round like pinwheels and steam come out of my ears. In fact, I would venture to say that knowing this brings them great delight in provoking such a show several times a year when the topic comes up at a convention or in a discussion group.
So, rather than continue to publicly rant, unreeling endlessly my venomous diatribe against fan fiction, I thought I’d gather my bile and spill it all here, in a logical and organized flow. Hereafter, I shall simply refer those who query to the infamous red shoe gripped by the mad woman in the attic.

Transforming Fan Culture into User-Generated Content: The Case of FanLib
The differences between the ways corporations and fans understand the value of grassroots creativity has never been clearer than the battle lines which have been drawn this weekend over a new venture called FanLib.

Transformative Works and Cultures
Transformative Works and Cultures (TWC) is a Gold Open Access international peer-reviewed journal published by the Organization for Transformative Works.

TWC publishes articles about popular media, fan communities, and transformative works, broadly conceived. We invite papers on all related topics, including but not limited to fan fiction, fan vids, mashups, machinima, film, TV, anime, comic books, video games, and any and all aspects of the communities of practice that surround them. TWC's aim is twofold: to provide a publishing outlet that welcomes fan-related topics, and to promote dialogue between the academic community and the fan community.

stewardess | The Why And How Of It: Issues Surrounding The OTW/AO3
"Three days ago, a person on my subscription list, whom I met online in 2007 through the FanLib fiasco, asked the world at large, "OK what *is* the thing going on with OTW right now? I keep seeing people going 'I'm not going to comment on this' but I have no idea what's going on. Help?"

Because I like to write summaries, I decided to answer.

The short answer: nothing particularly new or different is going on with the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW). What has changed is that the people involved are finally talking about it openly."
Great overview, very positive, also covers the beginning of the OTW.

rydra_wong: Unnecessary reminder
The OTW elections start today.

Before all this? Honestly, I was an OTW member and a supporter of the organization, though not particularly informed or involved. I admired Naomi Novik tremendously for her contributions.

Then I started listening to people who are or have been involved with the OTW, as staffers, board members or volunteers.

And there are an awful lot of people telling exactly the same stories

Vom Marlowe - OTW: Some experiences on non-profit management and org management, Pt 1
Disclaimer and intro: I don't belong to OTW, mostly because I'd never seen their pledge drive and because I usually give my charity money to a few other projects near and dear to me. I've seen a lot of talk about the elections and the board and the inner workings, however, and I have answered some questions for friends about how these organizations normally operate.

Complex and informative post on the structural organization of the OTW.

Symposium Blog
This blog offers a bridge between the OTW’s academic journal and fannish discussions, through posts that discuss both fannish meta topics and fannish perspectives on fan and media studies. Our hope is that the blog spurs greater interest in and engagement with Transformative Works and Cultures among fandom, and extends the reach of TWC by linking to and discussing ideas and themes presented in the journal.

Although we are primarily situated in LJ/DW-based media fandom, we will also attempt to address topics and fan cultures beyond that base whenever possible.
