C82: Works of Nicholas Rougeux
I am a Chicago-based self-taught web developer and artist. From a young age, my fascination with the digital world led to a healthy obsession with data visualization and fractal artwork, which has been published in publications and exhibitions around the world.

Since my start in the digital art and online worlds, simplicity and clarity have played key roles in what I have created. With everything I create, I try to embrace these concepts.

C82 was born from a desire to display the digital art I created and the hope of getting my name out there in the online world. Over time it evolved into a playground for personal experiments and a vehicle for voicing my opinion on art and the web.

Mass Made Soul
In a world where technological products tend toward either the minimal and sterile or the self-consciously baroque, Mass Made Soul is devoted to products that exhibit lively characters (without being kitschy one-liners), and which reward repeated viewing, touching, providing pleasure and little surprises over long periods of time.

Our focus is on true mass-manufactured products, not one-off or art pieces, or very low volume or hand-made products.

Designing with Lead-ins -
There are a number of typographic techniques that can help to draw attention to the content of an article, a book, a web page, or any important text. The use of a lead-in is one of them. A lead-in is the setting of the beginning of text in a different style or manner from that which follows it.

Empathy as Faux Ethics - EPIC
It’s not that empathy is a bad thing. Save for sociopaths, we all have it and use it every day. It is this ubiquity that makes empathy in design such an unexciting topic. Worse than its banality, empathy has quickly become a catch-all concept for good design and ethical action. Having empathy is not a key to design success, it just means you are not a sociopath. Real design skill is about realizing that empathy is a small part of a much larger system of influences, causes, and effects on the situation at hand.

If we can ever hope for sustainability, we need to stop tricking ourselves into thinking humans are the most important aspects of the ecological system. Anthropocentrism has been our perspective throughout industrialization, and it has left us with the multitude of ecological and social crises we deal with every day. The individual designer’s ethical stance should not be a sales pitch to clients; it should pervade their entire perspective and shape the decisions they make, with the understanding that all design decisions have political impacts. This takes an ecological approach, not an empathetic one.

Space in Design Systems – EightShapes LLC – Medium
- Grid ≠ Space. Grid is a Component, Using Space
- Introduce spatial convention with a grid, but don’t stop there. Align a grid’s margins, gutters, and column values with deeper spatial concepts woven through an entire component library
- Ground your spatial system’s range with a memorable base number, and limit expectations on how it’s used
- Consider a geometric progression or something similarly nonlinear. You might experience occasional tensions to add a 24 between 16 and 32. However, in my experience, such moments are rare and rarely justify breaking the simple system.
- Name space options simply, using a scale like t-shirt sizes to create a language people can remember and apply accurately
- Teach your spatial concepts using a tight doc diagram or cheat sheet. Such references quicken how we grasp, apply, and sustain the concepts through design and code.
- Tease apart concepts from property names. They are many to one and limit reuse to a single platform.
- Don’t give up on systematic clarity because of exceptions. Try to solve them. If you can overcome such nuances, even with a bit of CSS trickery, you can persist a simpler concept everyone can stick to.
- You can tune spatial density even with a barely-beyond primitive set of options

Most collaborators can’t *see* space, a primary reason it’s so arbitrarily applied. But now we’ve got a system: a limited number of concepts, each offering a limited range of options.

First Principles of Interaction Design (Revised & Expanded) | askTog
*Autant pour rappel des fondamentaux que comme argument de gros bon sens.*

Effective interfaces are visually apparent and forgiving, instilling in their users a sense of control. Users quickly see the breadth of their options, grasp how to achieve their goals, and can settle down to do their work. Effective interfaces do not concern the user with the inner workings of the system. Work is carefully and continuously saved, with full option for the user to undo any activity at any time. Effective applications and services perform a maximum of work, while requiring a minimum of information from users.

Because an application or service appears on the web or mobile device, the principles do not change. If anything, applying these principles—all these principles—becomes even more important.

How to sabotage your enemies—or colleagues—using time-tested tips from the CIA - Quartz
In 1944 the US Office for Strategic Services, the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), published a handy field guide to sabotaging one’s enemy.

5 (11) (a) (2). Make “speeches.” Talk as frequently as possible and at great length. Illustrate your “points” by long anecdotes and accounts of personal experiences. Never hesitate to make a few appropriate “patriotic” comments.

5 (11) (a) (3). When possible, refer all matters to committees, for “further study and consideration.” Attempt to make the committees as large as possible—never less than five.

5 (11) (b) (10). To lower morale and with it, productivity, be pleasant to inefficient workers; give them undeserved promotions. Discriminate against efficient worker; complain unjustly about their work.

Finally, one useful sabotage strategy that many people in companies today would recognize:

5 (11) (b) (11). Hold conferences when there is more critical work to be done.

Personally, I love the idea of what is, in effect, a kind of bolt-on castle, combining the language of one era—the Plug-In Cities of Archigram, say—with the aesthetics of the Knights of Malta.

In fact, it's almost tempting to write a design brief explicitly calling for new hybridizations of these approaches: modular, prefab construction... combined with Romanesque fortification.

Creating Civilizations
The language of representation, how “a single dot, or a small dash, or line and curve” can “combine in different ways to represent vastly different sets of information” has always been fascinating for the artist. With just those elements, “You could write a symphony, you could draft a skyscraper, or map a solar system or the oceans,” he said. Strati also makes use of his interest in schematics with his work in user experience; he designs virtual interfaces and maps with the same software he uses to draw.

Baudot code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Baudot code, invented by Émile Baudot,[1] is a character set predating EBCDIC and ASCII. It was the predecessor to the International Telegraph Alphabet No. 2 (ITA2), the teleprinter code in use until the advent of ASCII. Each character in the alphabet is represented by a series of bits, sent over a communication channel such as a telegraph wire or a radio signal. The symbol rate measurement is known as baud, and is derived from the same name.

High- and low-context cultures - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
High-context culture and the contrasting low-context culture are terms presented by the anthropologist Edward T. Hall in his 1976 book Beyond Culture. It refers to a culture's tendency to use high-context messages over low-context messages in routine communication. This choice between speaking styles indicates whether a culture will cater to in-groups, an in-group being a group that has similar experiences and expectations, from which inferences are drawn. In a higher-context culture, many things are left unsaid, letting the culture explain. Words and word choice become very important in higher-context communication, since a few words can communicate a complex message very effectively to an in-group (but less effectively outside that group), while in a low-context culture, the communicator needs to be much more explicit and the value of a single word is less important.

*Beaucoup de choses intéressantes. US, UK, CAN sont considérés low-context, France high-context.*
