News Challenge - How can we strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation? - Improved Privacy and Security through Web Standards
Security and privacy engineering work best when they are integrated at design time. We seek to make security and privacy expertise available to the groups designing W3C specifications and fitting them into the existing Web ecosystem, offering internal consulting services to identify privacy and security concerns, help resolve them in a manner that accounts for other considerations (performance, rapid deployment, business goals, etc.), and review the final specifications. We seek funding to strengthen the security expertise in W3C to work in concert with experts in industry and academia.

News Challenge - How can we strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation? - Advancing DANE (DNS-Based Authentication of Named Entities) to Secure the Internet's Transport Layer
DNSSEC, the foundational building block upon which DANE relies, is now readily available, in no small part due to our efforts in building the world’s largest DNSSEC signing infrastructure. While it’s currently possible to secure some web traffic and some server-to-server email, we’d like to see the benefits of the global DNSSEC deployment effort reach all Internet users, and that requires additional standardization and implementation work by programmers and participants in the IETF, the Internet Engineering Task Force, where Internet protocols are standardized. We’d like to build upon an already immense and successful global effort at the infrastructural level, and complete the task, bringing more secure voice, video, chat, and email tools to all Internet users.

News Challenge - How can we strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation? - Transparency Reporting for Beginners: A Starter Kit and Best Practices Guide for Internet Companies, and a Readers' Guide for Consumers, Journalists, & Advocates
It's time to survey the transparency reporting field and boil down the best practices, to document them and popularize them, to stick a flag in the ground we've gained and hold it: not just in the realm of surveillance reporting, which has gotten all the attention since Snowden, but also reporting related to censorship. It's time to do the first draft of the transparency report of the future--or, at least, document the best possible example of the current state of the art.

News Challenge - How can we strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation? - LEAP Encryption Access Project: Tools for Creating an Open, Federated and Secure Internet
LEAP’s approach is unique: we are making it possible for any service provider to easily deploy secure services and for people to use these services without needing to learn new software or change their behavior. These services are based on open, federated standards, but done right: the provider does not have access to the user’s data, and we use open protocols in the most secure way possible.

News Challenge - How can we strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation? - Personal Democracy Center, a community center for the “Internet public” in NYC
We learned that this community is longing for a place in New York City where they can come together to work on something that is bigger than a hackathon, yet less structured than a start-up incubator. They also want a place for curated workshops and events, as well as daily serendipitous encounters. In effect, they want a “third place” that is agnostic to pretense or status.
