Party Like You’re Bringing Down a Corrupt Government - Roads & Kingdoms
What began with local media investigating two shady foundations suspected of links to President Park Geun-hye had turned up the kind of political corruption so egregious and extensive that the country ground to a halt. Choi Soon-sil, a former cultist and éminence grise of Park, had been caught secretly manipulating national affairs and policy, as well as brokering what looked like exorbitant bribes from companies like Samsung in exchange for her influence over the president.

Hold Your Nose And Take A Bite: The Odd Appeal Of A South Korean Fish Dish : The Salt : NPR
How did this unusual dish gain its exalted status in Mokpo? The answer traces back to the mid-14th century. Back when Japanese pirates patrolled the South Seas, Korea's Gongmin forced the residents of Heuksan Island to move up the Yeongsan River. While heading inland and taking their fare with them, these settlers discovered that all their fish would go bad — except for the skate. Left to ferment in its own urine, the fish was naturally preserved and seemingly palatable.

Government of cultists?
Park Seung-joo, the nominee for minister of public safety and security, believes he's lived "47 previous lives" and there is a "black box" that contains all the information about him in the sky.

In his book published in 2013, titled "Love is Care," Park claims he "came to Earth 47 times in different forms" as a human or something else. He also insists he met Jeon Bong-jun, a prominent leader of the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894, in one of his 47 past lives, and Jeon gifted him a diary of the kings of end-Joseon Kingdom era.

He also states, "If a person dies, his body disappears, but his soul goes to the sky with two memory chips … there is a black box in the sky. My soul is in my body while the black box of my soul is in the sky. If I empty my head and contemplate, I can get the information I need from my black box."

This is utterly irrational. Rational people can expect that a corrupt politician may steal money for himself. They can even expect that he may steal for his family. Soups and Stews - Translated
Soups or stews are a part of almost every Korean meal. Stews are generally called jjigae (찌개), jjim (찜), or jeongol (전골). Jjigae dishes are usually boiled at your table over a hot fire, while jjim dishes are usually steamed, braised, or simmered. Jeongol dishes are similar to jjigae dishes, but generally cooked over a lower fire. Jigae generally have a main ingredient that is included in the name of the dish, while jeongol would contain a variety of main ingredients and would be more an upper-class dish. At first glance Korean soups (-guk or t'ang - 국, 탕) and stews can seem very similar but there are some differences - primarily soups have more broth and are cooked longer. As for the difference between guk and t'ang, guk is more liquidy and usually made mainly with vegetables (the broth will be fish or meat based usually, though).

The Korea Statistical Information Service (KOSIS) figures from July 2016 reported last month that 52.7 percent of working-aged Korean women (aged 15 and older) participate in the workforce, compared to 74.7 percent of men. For a country that is facing demographic decline—a shrinking population due to both aging and a declining birthrate—the absence of nearly 50 percent of women from the workforce means the economy will very soon face a severe shortage in workers who could play a vital role in sustaining and growing the economy.

EthnoScopes : Tracks of an Anthropologist: Haenyeo of Jeju-do
Grace Ha collected her research through literature research and language study prior to going to Jejudo and more while on Jeju. She conducted interviews and had personal communication with the haenyeo, fishing cooperative leaders, and scholars on the topic. And she also participated in the hanyeo school, not really a school but a practice hands-on in-the-water one-day (or more) experience of being a haenyeo. She laughingly said that when she participated and took her dive, without prior training as the training is "in the water", the haenyeo in charge of her just pointed down into the depths of the water and said things like, "Hey, you didn't stay down long enough" or "You'll never collect anything if you don't go deeper" or "What are you doing? Go down again!" And that was her experience at the haenyeo school! While many haenyeo can go down as much as 20 meters and stay down up to 3 minutes, the average is 5-6 meters and underwater 1-2 minutes. There is no way that a beginner could or should attempt such, but by pushing one's self, one can supposedly expand the human limits of diving.

Want To Dive With Mermaids In South Korea? | Zafigo
In the patriarchal society of South Korea, they have evolved to become breadwinners of the family. History books dating back to 15,000 years says that the women first started diving to collect pearls for their king. The divers are all women because the men were conscripted to the army in the 17th century. Fast forward to today, the tradition of women pearl divers continues. Though originating from Jeju Island, some have moved to Geoje Island to start a market there. As the women play mermaid for the day, their husbands would stay by the shore to sort out the wife’s harvest.

Seora Dawon (설아다원) | Official Korea Tourism Organization
The name Seora Dawon means "a garden of fragrant buds". Every year in spring, a tea brewing workshop is offered. Students, families and group visitors can pick, toast and roll the tea leaves. The workshop is popular, as guests can take home the leaves they have picked. The guesthouse consists of a hanok and a red clay room. Additionally, the tea and Pungmul (traditional percussion music) experience areas as well as a Sarangang (guest room) are available, allowing families and groups to take part in a tea ceremony, and learn about the culture of the southern region.
