Flickr agrees to be acquired by SmugMug – Q&A | Flickr Blog
SmugMug has prided itself on having very photographer-friendly terms without some of the standard verbiage and licenses that many platforms grant themselves to use your data in a way that best suits them. This is one of the reasons we’re thrilled to have found a new home at SmugMug.

"The service immediately ran into controversy after some photographers complained that Yahoo was earning up to $49 for each print, but was not sharing any of the money with those who had posted the photos in the first place."

What’s Wrong With This Picture? Flickr is about to sell off your Creative Commons photos | Jeffrey Zeldman Presents The Daily Report: Web Design News & Insights Since 1995
"I’ve had a Flickr Pro account for about ten years. I love Flickr. Sometimes, for years, it has been like loving a friend who is in a coma. Now it’s like helplessly watching a cocaine-addicted friend snort up their kid’s college fund.

Come on, Yahoo."

Flickr: The Help Forum: How to revert to old photo page layout.
This is a lot of work for a very temporary reprieve. The old format is only available because the other national regions haven't flipped to the new page yet. Once that happens this page format will cease to exist on their servers. And any bugs you face with these technical acrobatics will be unaddressable and unfixable. Your energies might be better spent learning how to deal with the new format.

The New Flickr Sucks and Here’s Why | Infinite Hollywood
UGLY WEBSITE, SHEESH, BUT THE RANT IS ON POINT

"they decided to reinvent Flickr as a new “hip” photo site. Flickr has never been about being cool. It might have been a trend briefly after it’s creation, but it soon settled into being a site that had fantastic, but basic functionality. Yahoo is furious that Instagram has so much of the market share. What Yahoo failed to realize is that Flickr doesn’t share the same market with Instagram. Flickr wasn’t ever about posting the latest photos from your iPhone."

"The new Flickr is supposed to be a place where you post up all your random, pointless photos. The original Flickr gave you information on the camera used, aperture, shutter settings and allowed you to interact with the photographer to learn more. These options still appear in the new and “improved” Flickr, but they’re buried away because they aren’t flashy enough."

"Flickr has decided to “grandfather in” existing Pro users, so that you can continue to pay $25 a year of unlimited photos and no ads. It’s a good deal, but again, it’s a surface thing. Flickr has made it clear that this could end at any time." ... I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY ADS YET, IS IT BECAUSE I'M PRO?

"Perhaps Yahoo will listen to it’s massive base of paying customers and decide to reimplement the old Pro program and allow the basic layouts to return." ... WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER

Flickr Is Back, Letting Us Go Home Again
"Thanks to bureaucracy and inaction, Flickr missed out on the mobile and social revolutions that have defined the last five years. Meanwhile, Instagram became the billion-dollar photo-sharing service and Facebook became, well, a company that could afford to buy a billion-dollar photo-sharing service. And as the world went mobile and every pocket carried a camera loaded with apps, we turned to Facebook and Instagram to share our photos of friends and family and food. Especially food. Flickr could have been Yahoo’s Instagram, or maybe even Facebook. Instead, it became its Friendster — a reminder of a bygone era and what could have been but never was." ... The New Flickr — Shawn Blanc
As someone who has been a paying Flickr Pro user for several years, I am ecstatic to see that someone over at Yahoo is taking Flickr seriously. I hope this new iPhone app is a sign of things to come and that the future holds significant updates to the website, iPad, and Android. And I hope the updates will beget an increase in regular activity, because I’d love to see Flickr rise to relevancy again.

Flickr Is Getting a Major Makeover
"Flickr missed its chance to be Instagram before Instagram was Instagram; it also faces fierce competition from Google+ and Picasa, which is siphoning off some of the social photographers who make up one of Flickr’s core user bases. (Mr. Spiering declined to name who he thinks Flickr’s top competitors are. “It’s very hard to tell,” he said. “People use it in different ways.” Some upload thousands of photos and never leave a comment; others use the site as a photo database; and others exclusively comment but never upload.)" ... At Flickr, Fending Off Rumors and Facebook
"Visiting Facebook is a daily ritual for many people, but that simply is not the case with Flickr. ... Flickr was founded in 2004 by Stewart Butterfield and his wife at the time, Caterina Fake. A year later, after the site gained a large following and ample excitement, they sold it to Yahoo for a reported $35 million. ... Behind the scenes, however, Yahoo failed to provide some resources needed during the first couple of years, said Mr. Butterfield, who left Yahoo in 2008 and has since founded a video game start-up. Decision-making slowed because of bureaucracy. ... Today, Flickr is home to around five billion photos and videos (it accepts video clips of up to 90 seconds). Roughly three million more are added daily."  ... ANOTHER GOLD MINE THAT YAHOO HAS NEGLECTED, WHY NOT "SUNSET" IT? :)
