Some Mandolin History – Envy F – The New Vintage Frets
Some Mandolin History
Without going into too much detail, articles published in international newspapers during the first week of March 1878 provide evidence that the arrival of the mandolin on the world stage took place in Paris. Gratis performances by a large ensemble of Spanish musicians, dancers and singers (some who were erroneously said to play mandolins) met with phenomenal success during the 1878 Mardi Gras celebration in Paris.

The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music consists of over 29,000 pieces of American popular music.

This music was generously donated to The Johns Hopkins University by Lester S. Levy over a period of years starting in 1976 and is now housed in the Special Collections Division of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library. The collection spans the years 1780 to 1980, but its strength is its thorough documentation of nineteenth-century America through popular music.

providencemandolin.org | The Providence Mandolin Orchestra
As best as can be determined the Providence Mandolin Orchestra (PMO) was first founded in 1914, marking 2014 as the group’s centenary. Newspaper articles and programs tell us of performances from the early era with Giuseppe Pettine and William Place Jr., both premier mandolin virtuosos in the United States during the instrument’s “Golden Age”. The modern version of the PMO dates from 1971, when it was revived by Hibbard Perry, who had been a student of Pettine’s. Over the past four decades the PMO has become the leading American mandolin ensemble with regular performances throughout the eastern United States and Western Europe.

The PMO champions the performance of contemporary music for mandolin ensemble, including many pieces written for the group. In the past several years the PMO has given world or American premieres of new works by Clarice Assad, Betty Beath, Richard Charlton, Jim Dalton, Owen Hartford, Victor Kioulaphides, Annette Kruisbrink, Stephen Lalor, Olaf Naslund, Michael Nix, Robert Schultz, Emile Stopler, Caroline Szeto, Francine Trester, Frank Wallace, and August Watters. Also over the past several years the PMO has embarked on an ambitious program of collaborative performances with leading European mandolin ensembles, including Het Consort (The Netherlands); the Ensemble a Plectre de Toulouse (France); the JZO NRW (Germany); and the Orchestra of the International Mandolin Academy (Italy), and the Saarländisches Zupforchester (Germany).

Since 1989 the PMO has been directed by Mark Davis. Davis began his guitar and mandolin studies with Hibbard Perry, and continued his studies with the pioneering German guitarist/conductor/composer Siegfried Behrend from whom he inherited his fascination with contemporary forms of musical expression.

Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra - Home
The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra is currently celebrating its 75th season, having originated in 1941 when a group of six musicians met in the backroom of a local barbershop to discuss their dream of forming a mandolin orchestra. In 1945 these music pioneers formed the Orange and Vicinities Mandolin Society, under the direction of Elia Ciricillo. The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra was under the direction of Conductor David Vallillo in December of 1949, but the orchestras often performed together. In the 1960s the members of four different mandolin orchestras decided to merge as the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra.
The orchestra operates under the auspices of the Bloomfield Federation of Music and is comprised of volunteer musicians from northern and central New Jersey. Mandola player Peter Longo of West Orange has been a member of the orchestra since its founding in 1941. The current members of the orchestra represent a vast cross section of backgrounds and careers. The orchestra has an extensive repertoire, which includes Italian favorites, traditional and popular American songs, Broadway selections, and operatic and classical orchestral music. Enrico Granafei became conductor of the orchestra five years ago, following a tenure of thirty-seven years by former conductor and arranger, Gabriele Nevola. An accomplished musician, composer and arranger, Maestro Granafei has enhanced the repertoire of the orchestra by including the arrangements and original compositions of musicians from many ethnic backgrounds and musical styles.

Andersen Stringed Instruments History | Archtop Guitar Luthier
I built my first guitar in 1973 in Phoenix, AZ. I was in high school physics class, and a friend who also played guitar told me about a shop he had visited over the weekend. He said they were making guitars, and in fact anyone could go in and build a guitar for a small fee. Well, I went to check it out, and it was true. The shop was open from noon to midnight and the owner would help you build a guitar. I was 17, a junior in high school, and to me, this was pretty cool stuff. I signed on to build a 12-string guitar. It took about six months, but I ended up with a guitar I had made myself, and I was hooked.

BAM blog: December 2011
Colgate Mandolin Club, 1911.
Jazz at the Brooklyn Academy of Music? At one time, it was unthinkable. When BAM opened in 1861, there was already controversy over presenting dramatic productions—even Shakespeare—that might even hint at being morally dubious. Since BAM was initially considered a “highbrow” institution, jazz practically had to sneak its way in.

Minstrel shows, once the country's most popular form of entertainment, are often credited as a DNA building block of jazz, and BAM presented a few of them. In 1910, the St. Charles Borromeo Holy Name Society hosted a minstrel show and reception featuring such songs as “When the Bell in the Light House Rings Ding Dong” and “Band! Band! Band!”

Sandusky History: Mandolin Clubs in Sandusky
An article in the December 2, 1920 issue of the Sandusky Star Journal reported that Mr. H.L. McCullough, a math instructor at Sandusky High School, had recently established two Mandolin Clubs. Club members varied through the years, and included both adults and high school aged students. Pictured in the musical group above are: Carroll Post, mandolin; Verna Murphy, mandolin; Ella Aust, mandolin; Edwin Aust, guitar; and Mr. H.L. McCullough, guitar. In the early 1920s, members of the Mandolin Clubs provided musical entertainment for school events, church services, and for meetings of several area civic organizations. On February of 1921 a quartet from the Mandolin Club performed at a W.C.T.U. meeting in honor of the memory of Francis Willard, a well known temperance leader who had died on February 17, 1898. Live musical entertainment was an important part of the social life of Americans in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century.

Orchestras and Groups

We've devoted an individual page for every quartet or orchestra we know of in the U.S. and Canada. Membership in CMSA is not a strict requirement for being listed here but many of the members of these groups are a part of CMSA. Of course we encourage all orchestras and ensembles everywhere to join us if they aren't already members! You can conveniently request a membership application or receive all of the necessary information to join at this site. And of course, it's not necessary to be a member of an orchestra to join CMSA!

If you are part of a mandolin organization that would like to be listed here, contact David Betts for additional information.

Phil Lawrence Mandolin Guitar Music
Phil Lawrence has been playing mandolin since 1978 when he bought his first round back mandolin on a whim. He began studying with Rudy Cipolla, the San Francisco Italian-American composer and mandolinist. He quickly learned to play all different styles of music—bluegrass, folk, rock, jazz, reggae, and even klezmer. Phil produced and published independent recordings of his original compositions in the 1980’s and 1990’s under his own label, Mandolinimal Productions.

The Choro Ensemble does a pioneering job in the US performing the sophisticated and beautiful Brazilian music called Choro. Although most peope are not familiar with the Choro style, the public falls in love with this genre of music that combines the classical European elements, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, improvisation and constant counterpoints between melody and the 7 string guitar. More than merely playing Choro music for the American public, the Choro Ensemble also presents its own innovations in terms of arrangements and original compositions.

Mandolin Brothers, Ltd.
Hello, I'm Stan Jay, President of Mandolin Brothers, Ltd. Have you ever asked yourself "what's it worth?" If you own or if you have been offered a vintage American guitar, a banjo or mandolin or electric bass and wish to know its current market value, just call and ask us for advice. Or better yet, drop us a line on email. In case you're wondering, the guitar I'm holding in the photo is not a guitar at all. Actually, it's a gumball machine. We don't sell gumball machines (more's the pity) but we felt it was a welcome change from my holding a guitar. This picture was taken on The Pier at Huntington Beach, CA on a day in January when all flights in and out of New York were canceled due to a blizzard. You cannot imagine how happy I was to be in Southern California on that day. If you would like to experience a feeling not unlike the feeling I had that day, watching the surfers and the seagulls, all you have to do is pick up the phone and order a nice guitar, banjo or mandolin from us. It'll make you feel so much better.

The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra and Its Mission
The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra was conceived by Elizabeth and Brian Oberlin in an effort to revive the beauty and popularity of the traditional mandolin orchestra, which was mainstream in the United States around the turn of the 20th Century. At that time, the mandolin orchestras were highly popular throughout the United States with most cities and high schools having their own.

With the emergence of folk music, the mandolin regained popularity, and mandolin orchestras have since burgeoned. Today, many U.S. cities have mandolin orchestras, and their presence abroad, which never waned, also continues to grow. The available body of music for mandolin orchestras is vast, ranging from classical to swing to jazz and everything in between.

The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra is partnered with the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro. The Walters Cultural Arts Center is a magnificent facility, borne out of the same ideals as the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra —to nurture the growth of music and art as an integral part of the community.

One of the primary goals of the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra is to provide unique performance and educational opportunities for music enthusiasts of all ages and levels of expertise.

The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra has approximately thirty members and is comprised of mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, and double basses. Within the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra is a smaller group of musicians—the Oregon Mandolin Chamber Orchestra—which rehearses and performs with, as well as separately from, the entire Orchestra, and, occasionally, hosts special guest musicians.
