NYTimes: More Than Coffee: New York’s Vanishing Diner Culture
november 2016
Here's my question: is the 'fancy' coffee shop an adequate replacement for the classic diner? And also: in the current culture of food and high rents is it even possible to offer a restaurant where food is *not* the primary objected? How does one even conceive of a 'third-place' these days?

The Believer - Everything Is Going to Be OK
april 2016
"Perhaps the target age group was wrong. According to Pendergrast, “millions of kids” called the hotline “just to see what happened.” Preteens, not young adults, may have been OK Soda’s ideal audience: what better way to waste time as a suburban sixth-grader in the pre-internet age than to call a weird hotline over and over? (As Coke discovered, this didn’t translate to sales.) These days, thirty-year-olds are more likely to remember OK Soda than forty-year-olds. For members of Generation Y, it was a chance to play dress-up as Generation X, which couldn’t be bothered to care."

Debriefing Mike Murphy | The Weekly Standard
march 2016
The weird thing, Murphy says, is even the rich guys he speaks to know it. One of them, a Right to Rise donor, gave Murphy a hop from New York back to L.A. on his brand new Gulfstream. Murphy calls it a "G-a-lot," as in, "it was bigger than a G-V." Upon deplaning, "the hedge-fund zillionaire pulls me aside, and says, 'I paid $55 million for this, and the government gave me most of it in tax breaks. I don't know if people ask for things from Jeb. But here's what I want: Tell him to get rid of that shit.' Because even the guys in that world feel crappy about it. It was an interesting moment."
...
With just half a Marco beer in him, Murphy starts waxing philosophic. The game isn't as much fun as it used to be. Everything is so postmodern and meta that "nothing means anything, because everything is what the scam is.

Michael Baumann writing for Grantland:
None of that mattered, though, because after realizing they couldn’t beat the bejeezus out of Utley, the Mets found a similarly pale and leathery replacement: the baseball.
After that initial burst of Dodgers scoring, the Mets stopped being the Mets and became the Hedge Fund Managers: They arrived in New York, immediately put up a bunch of crooked numbers, and would not stop no matter how much waste and ruin they left in their wake.
