Progress Report - C3IoT Analyst Day - A unique approach to PaaS needs more adoption - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, C3IoT is a relatively small vendor, with limited resources that must support a large solution footprint and a demanding customer base. Single projects that the C3IoT platform powers typically required a headcount larger than C3IoT’s complete employee base. Truly a David vs a Goliath task scenario, which C3IoT can only solve with scaling know how and 3rd party resources rapidly on its platform."

Event Report - SAP Hybris Live 2017 Barcelona - YaaS morphs and more agility ahead - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, SAP Hybris is in the middle of a transformation on the platform side and at the same side customer best practices are changing. SAP overall is trying to capture this with its design thinking projects under the SAP Leonardo umbrella, it is not clear how SAP Hybris is part of them. Equally missing is the overall SAP CRM vision and plans, something that always affects ecommerce plans, where SAP Hybris plays. Lastly SAP needs a 3rd party data and overall DaaS strategy, as customer acquisition and sentiment collected from first party data – will always remain only a fraction of the challenge ecommerce vendors have to solve."

Event Report - Workday Rising 2017 - Workday opens and advances the platform - but its early days - by @holgermu
"Overall Workday is moving in the right direction, I’d like to see it move a little faster, but customers will be in good shape as long as Workday delivers on the platform, architecture and functionality capabilities it has announced and shared at Rising. Stay tuned."

Event Report - Oracle Open World 2017 - Top 3 Positives / Top 3 Concerns - Overall good - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, Oracle needs to find a better way with customers and improve its image and day to day standing. Betting solely on the better product is risky. And with the overall bet of Oracle on the large, integrated, chip to click stack (from the Silicon to the user click in SaaS) – enterprises will even more think twice before they do business with a vendor of Oracle’s wreputation. Doing right and better with customers is always a good true North – but it seems it is not (yet) a priority for Oracle executives, as none of that was mentioned in the critical keynotes."

News Analyses Roundup - SAP's September Tech Announcements - SAP doubles down on technology
"On the concern side, SAP is coming late to many of these moves, but better late – than never. Extra kudos for the ABAP beta – we have asked SAP for many years about the future of ABAP developers. If you lose a developer community it is always hard to make up (look no further than IBM with Rational). And SAP decided to build the road before the destination with EIM. Ok. Event Report - Microsoft Ignite / Envision 2017 - Broad push - few highlights - by @holgermu
"On the concern side Microsoft took an even more notable timeout on the Hololens side. And despite making key announcements that matter to customers (for instance support for Kubernetes, Tensorflow, CloudFoundry), these partnerships were all mentioned in the keynotes but not shown in demos (I may have missed them) or announced in roadmaps. Instead a lot of innovation on Docker came to light, e.g. SQL Server 2017 can run in… a Docker container. The biggest challenge enterprises have with Microsoft is the absence of a holistic PaaS strategy."

News Analysis - Oracle Unveils New Programs that Transform how Customers Buy and Consume Cloud – Gloves Off - by @holgermu
"For the industry, its key to watch how well Oracle can move customers to cloud (or cloud at customer). For Oracle competitors, massive potential could disappear. Summer 2017 News Analysis - Workday announces its PaaS - by @holgermu
"Workday has long held the record of most closed major SaaS property in the market. The moniker was something along the lines that “SaaS knows no customization”. A valid point, but only to the degree that enterprises must be able to run their business. At the moment enterprises can’t run their business anymore the pressure on vendors grows very quickly to provide better extension, customization and sometimes even stand-alone software building options."

Summer 2017 News Analysis - SAP Leonard event July 2017 - by @holgermu
"CxOs know that the 20th century best practices will not keep their enterprise in the survival race of the early 21st century. Design Thinking work shops are nothing new, and have proven themselves in the past. What is new is that an enterprise software vendor of the caliber of SAP is ready to partner with enterprises to establish these new best practices. This ensures integration with the rest of SAP automation and the potential bonus of becoming part of the roadmap. In the traditional approach it was clear that the work would always remain a custom effort – with the associated integration burden and maintenance costs following from a custom effort"

Summer 2017 News Analysis - Oracle invests in IaaS (or at least CAPEX) - by @holgermu
"You can’t build out a cloud in the real world without massive CAPEX investment. Look at the AWS / Amazon, Microsoft Azure and Google numbers. On the flip side Oracle execs are smart enough to not throw good money after bad money – e.g. put CAPEX $s in a non-working cloud infrastructure. So, at any chance given to me since 2014 I asked CEO Mark Hurd – when will Oracle spend more CAPEX? The answer has always been evasive… But at its OpenWorld conference, Oracle unveiled the 2nd generation of its IaaS solution. It now seems to get the CAPEX it needs to get real."

Why it matters: Despite the trend to cloud there are still many enterprises that have to operate enterprise automation on premises. Look at the number of SAP customers opting to run S/4HANA on premises. Microsoft now offers a path for them to run Azure similar / identical products – and build and move applications and load to an Azure like on premises stack – with the option to move it later. And there are plenty of motivated hardware vendors that want to sell more servers to customers for their local data centers (Cisco, Dell, HP etc etc.)"

"On the concern side, Microsoft has to find a match to the uptake in mindshare and real-world AI deployments that Google’s Tensorflow is seeing, if not Tensorflow will be the Kubernetes of 2017 – a Google launched open source offering that dominates an important aspect of the cloud infrastructure. And one can argue that Tensorflow is even bigger stakes than Kubernetes, as it not only dominates the AI / Machine Learning equation, but due to data gravity pulls along substantial data storage and processing load. Granted, this is less an issue for Salesforce in 2017 than it was eg. in 2012, as the vendor has grown to an impressive scale. But still R&D, marketing, sales etc. efforts go towards to platforms. Event Report - Cloud Foundry CF Summit 2017 - Microsoft joins the kingdom - by @holgermu
"Microsoft joins the kingdom, SAP makes mark – Last year I referred to Cloud Foundry as the ‘King of PaaS’ – due to the lack of competition, most prominently in regards of the platform’s uptake by industry players that in another era would have built their own platform. And certainly not adopted an open source project. So, along the analogy, Cloud Foundry sees Microsoft joining the kingdom. While all partners are important, Microsoft is almost the last data point (Oracle is the last major player still standing out – formally) to join. Microsoft is a key win for CloudFoundry due to the vendor’s long history as development tool, platform product vendor and of course as owner of the Windows franchise. It also helps Microsoft as it gives its customers a (lower level) PaaS as go to location. Coupled with the expanded SAP presence and keynote by CTO Goerke it gives CloudFoundry more chops, most importantly adding two more cloud platforms with Azure and the SAP Cloud."

"SAP & Hadoop – it remains rocky – A regular reader knows the concerns I have articulated many times with SAP – the lack of support for ‘spinning rust’ – aka HDD, aka ultra large cheap storage of digital information. "
On the concern side, there are only few things at the moment. Microsoft must clarify usage (and potential pricing as it consumes resources to use it) to the developer and ISV community. Biggest concern is probably Hololens, which was unusually quiet for a Build conference. Tacitly admitting that there is a lower end space for VR is one way as an indicator. I am sure the strategists in Redmond would have planned to have the Hololens for holiday shopping season 2017. Now it’s a partner strategy – but a fundamentally different experience – it is 100% VR – not mixed reality. And that middle of the road Windows 10 PCs can run this is a sign for a volume and low-price strategy – quite the opposite where the Hololens is these days. I think we will learn sooner or later more."

Effectively VMware on AWS creates what VMware promised a long time with vCloudAir - only the hardware comes from AWS this time."

Event Report - Salesforce Dreamforce #df16 - It's not about Einstein - but the platform - by @holgermu
On the concern side, time is off the essence for Salesforce. Key competitors in e.g. CRM as well as platform have made that move already and do not have to pay the tax for a dual platform in all phases of the software development lifecycle. The problem is that Salesforce product development speed is not moving breathtaking fast, e.g. an indicator is that the Sales Cloud has not fully moved to the new Lightning user experience / platform, that was announced …. at Dreamforce… 2014."

Event Report - SAP / Trenitalia Digital Summit - SAP is serious about IoT - by @holgermu
"On the concern side SAP still needs to clarify its BigData in general and it’s Hadoop strategy specifically, acquiring Altiscale (my take here) is a step in the right direction, so was Vora (here my take at GA). But IoT – and all next generation applications need a Hadoop answer that runs on cheap HDD, as well as a supported IaaS platform answer. And while I understand the SAP strategy in regards of IaaS is evolving (partnerships with IBM (see here), Microsoft (see here) and AWS (for BW/4HANA – see here)) – the support for Hadoop on HDD in regards of official platforms support is - overdue."

Musings - Quo vadis Twitter? Who could, should buy Twitter - and what is Twitter really? - by @holgermu
"It is fascinating to see Twitter grow to its current usage level and still struggle with monetization, turning to a profit. There are many assets inside of Twitter that can be of value for an acquirer – but they are all not easy to unlock, leverage. To me Google makes the most sense – but not sure if the vendor has the appetite to such a large investment."

News Analysis - SAP acquires Altiscale: It's not about BigData, but Next Gen Apps - by @holgermu
"A good move by SAP – that needed to have native Hadoop, HDD based BigData capabilities to operate use cases where in memory was either commercially or not even technically feasible. With Altiscale SAP now only addresses this part – but also the know how challenge that is surrounding BigData. At Constellation we see more than 66% of BigData project that are live and delivering value seeing interruption because of know how issues, vendor changes, new software, new consultants etc. So SAP gains both product capabilities and services capabilities, the combination is crucial."

First Take - Microsoft Ignite - AI, Adobe and FPGA [From the Fences] - by @holgermu
"On the concern side Microsoft needs to stretch the rubber between where it needs to be vis a vis the competition (there most notably AWS and Google) and at the same time where its customers are. There is a lot for customers to digest, understand and bring back to their executive teams for the adoption conversation. Making the case to a CIO’s peers was something that Microsoft has room to improve on, and at the same time needs to make sure their customer base does not get overwhelmed. Sometimes less is more. But a good problem to have."

First Take - SAP BW/4HANA - Data Gravity and Cloud win - by @holgermu
"A few days ago SAP formally launched its newest offering, its BW product as BW/4HANA. No surprised on HANA, as it dominates branding with SAP these days, the 4HANA suggests a sister relationship to the OLTP / ERP S/4HANA."

Progress Report - ADP Analyst Day 2016 - ADP has turned around Vantage HCM - by @holgermu
"On the concern side ADP cannot afford to rest. While the current UI is still appealing, it is no longer as fresh and in tune with the latest innovations in UI that are happening these days. Likewise its Data Cloud is on the right architecture and platform, given these decisions were taken 2+ years ago, but a fresh start today may consider other platforms, designs and architectures."

Market Move - Dell Technologies is here - 3 scenarios and a bonus perspective - by @holgermu

Event Report - Box BoxWorks - Box is on the run - now with a platform - by @holgermu
"On the concern side there was little progress and announcement on the machine learning side. As an overall trend the intelligence permeates the LCD, which means the intelligence and the actor is not the human anymore – but the software behind it. In many cases today already, software is the better ‘driver’ for content than humans, it is cheaper, never sleeps, does not make mistakes, and if programmed correctly is bias free."

Progress Report - IBM Alliances Insights - Deep Plans, now it is execution time - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, IBM now needs to execute on these plans, without falling back to traditional ‘professional services’ roots and deliver the more IP based, productized offerings. IBM has the DNA, resources and people to do that, but they need to come together at the right time. The Rubicon that the services business has to cross is not to only leverage existing product commitments from a services perspective, but to create lasting IP or even product offerings that create a flywheel effect between its services and these new products."

Event Report - Pivotal SpringOne Platform - Spring in its 2nd spring - by @holgermu
"On the concern side it is really what the next steps after the immediate and announced ones will be. Adoption remains a challenge for all players, it is one thing to select a tool, a totally different challenge to become a software producer for almost every enterprise. Breaking with the best practice of using standard software and starting to build you own next generation applications is a major internal transformation."

Market Move - Oracle acquires NetSuite - Oddly consolidation means more options for customers - by @holgermu
"This is likely not going to affect Oracle Cloud customers. Oracle has been a serial acquirer, the company knows how to do acquisitions, though this is the 2nd largest acquisition Oracle has done. And NetSuite has more overlap with many Oracle products than Peoplesoft had – e.g. NetSuite brings working CRM and Manufacturing applications to Oracle (something Peoplesoft did to a lesser extend). So Oracle will have to be very clear on where it sees the sweet spot for either product and what customers can expect to use depending on their size and use case"

Global HR Matters - How to get there - Part 1 - Why global is challenging, but critically important - by @holgermu
"On the software side, Global HR software on the contrary though, does exist, but as one can imagine it is a challenge to create and even more to maintain this kind of software. For an HR software vendor to be in the ‘Global HR’ system business, the vendor needs to understand the local content, the legislation and best practices that govern each of the countries the vendors wants to support."

Musings - The Privacy Shield is real - what are the CxO repercussions? - by @holgermu
"The good news for enterprises is regulatory certainty - for now. It's a good time to check internal applications on compliance and have a conversation with your SaaS vendors on compliance. If an enterprises does not have data centers on both sides of the Atlantic - it's time to get them in place, or long term write off the business on the other continent."

Event Report - SAP Sapphire 2016 - Top 3 Positives & Concerns: SAP changes - probably for the better - by @holgermu
" In the latest move, SAP announced a broad partnership with Microsoft, which on the IaaS side meant that SAP would support Azure for both HANA and S/4HANA deployments (read my analysis here). For a company that needs every $ from cloud to satisfy the financial projections, a remarkable and courageous move. Probably a wise one, too – as SAP may have realized that it cannot build the next generation IaaS platform with the know how available in house."
