Yowza! A Nine-Step Decision Process to Help Guide Supply Chain Planning Selection
"A business decision for supply chain planning should focus on the selection of the technology that can drive better business outcomes. This often in direct opposition with the solution that minimizes the IT budget. For example, there are very few planning pilots where Oracle or SAP beat the competition on capabilities. I often tell clients, “What good is a cheap solution if it does not solve the business problem?” A focus on IT standardization is one of the primary reason for low business user satisfaction in the recent study shown in Figure 5."

How Supply Chain Lost Its Mojo
"Bad Conferences on Steroids. With the pink ghetto marketing organization focused on leads and placement of speakers, there is a strong investment in “conference sponsorships.” In England, we have a plethora of event organizers that roll out many questionable events largely funded by technology companies. Business users attend free, but the primary goal is to provide a forum for technologists to advertise their products (I feel this way about EFT, IE Group, SCOPE, World Trade Group). The reason? There is no vetting of presenters."

My Take: The Role of Anaplan in Defining the Art of the Possible in Supply Chain Planning
"The pace of technology change is faster than business user adoption. The first step is education. The second is action. In my travels, I see companies stuck in a quagmire of arguments focused on the standardization on yesterday’s technologies versus the adoption of new approaches. In embracing the art of the possible, companies struggle. Many companies make the mistake that yesterday’s technologists–JDA, Logility, Oracle, SAP– are good business development partners to define the “art of the possible.” (On a side note, during my fifteen years as an analyst, I have never seen co-development with large established technologists be successful.) The internal dissonance within the manufacturing organization is deadly."

Over six years, we have repeated questions in multiple surveys to get critical mass. We see that when companies have better alignment there is a belief their supply chain is working well. Cut down the friction. When manufacturing reports to a supply chain function, there is better alignment and a stronger belief the supply chain is working well."

" Blockchain is an immutable ledger. On the webinar, Juan Ruiz from IBM used an analogy that I loved. He shared the story from his boss. She describes immutable as completing a crossword puzzle with an ink pen versus a pencil. When you use a pencil on a crossword puzzle, you can erase the entries. However, in the use of the pen, the first entries stay and are then crossed through. This is a great analogy to understand “immutable” as it pertains to blockchain."

How Can I Drive Lights-Out Planning? - by @lcecere
"Yesterday, I facilitated a group of business leaders attempting to drive innovation in supply chain practices. The last five years were tough for the group. With five serial years of Draconian cost-cutting efforts and downsizing, the team has been heads-down trying to survive. For many years, the focus was overcoming day-to-day hurdles. In addition, the company, for the first time in a decade, is struggling to grow. As a result, there has been little time for reflection. Conferences, external training, or educational forums took a back seat."

Trust, But Verify - by @lcecere #scm
"Avoid a System Integrator’s Recommendation. System integrators usually get a commission on the sale of the software. They are usually not a neutral party. Ask your system integrator for details on their arrangement with the software provider. Buyer beware!"

Three Cool Technologies - by @lcecere
"Driving supply chain innovation is hard. This is why I have a soft spot in my heart for technology innovators. As I sit with my coffee, I am reviewing a response by a large system integrator to a client that is just bad. Really BAD. The large system integrator is blindly recommending the technology they know and not the full range of products. The client is looking for innovative solutions, and the consultant is hawking yesterday’s approaches. Buyer beware!"

AGCO: Driving a Digital Manufacturing Transformation - by @lcecere
"The final factory inspection quality teams disliked having to get off of the large pieces of equipment to complete inspection lists on a computer. In 2012, this turned into an IT problem: the tablets were being dropped from the tops of tractors with no warranty available. This was no small problem: the rugged tablet was $3,000 to replace. At a Kaizen event of the quality team, IT came up with using Google Glass as an alternative."

What About Them Apples? - by @lcecere #scm
"While many argue that the definitions of the time horizons change with concurrent planning, I say not so fast. I think that within a global organization there is a need for a design group, an S&OP plan, and a replenishment process. Define the boundaries of the time horizons by work process definitions, not technology capabilities. Planning at companies varies by governance and cultural DNA."
