Event Report - AWS reInvent 2017 - AWS grows and grows...
"One of the emerging concerns is around Machine Learning. Expectations that AWS may announces its own neural network and compete with Google’s TensorFlow seem unlikely to happen at this point. Who would have thought that AWS would enter multiple partnerships with Seattle neighbor Microsoft on Machine Learning? The risks for AWS are tangible, if any other IaaS vendor can show faster, cheaper and better Machine Learning performance, it will create a magnetic effect on data. And with data goes load, not to mention that Machine Learning itself creates a lot of load. And load is the mother milk of IaaS vendors success."

Event Report - SAP TechEd 2018 - Las Vegas -
"SAP is making substantial progress with SAP CP. With the commitment of getting the “5 sisters” (Ariba, Concur, Fieldglass, Hybris and SuccessFactors) platformed on SAP CP there is a much clearer platform strategy going forward. SAP has bet on CloudFoundry and CloudFoundry has won the PaaS market (for now). At the same time Kubernetes is for the first time giving CxOs cross IaaS portability and it’s good to see SAP supporting that with Gardener. FaaS is early days in general, especially for cross IaaS FaaS, where the IaaS vendors all try to create lock-in. But CxOs don’t want lock-in – neither does SAP – so SAP has an important role to play and may have to use its muscle to build a cross IaaS FaaS standard (dangling all the on-premise load that SAP commands will make all top 3 IaaS vendors pay attention). For CxOs this means SAP CP has delivered another proof point to be the PaaS of choice when building net gen Apps in the SAP ecosystem."

Monday’s Musings: Seven Common Failures Plague Board Room Strategy In Digital Transformation
"Laggard market perception cascades failure and customer disillusionment. Declining brands and organizations in laggard industries stripped of brand equity enter an era of negative market perception. Instead of redefining the mission and purpose with new business models, orgs often take a short cut of branding without substance. Seen as devoid of innovation with a commoditized non-differentiated offering, every stakeholder from employee, customer, partner, supplier, and investor lowers expectations of success. The result – leaders who focus on short term gain, declining employee morale, lack of interest by investors, and lower quality from suppliers. Partners lose interest in creating co-innovation and co-creation ecosystems with laggards. Customers no longer find an affinity for a brand that has sold its soul and will not pay for premium pricing when they no longer see value."

Musings - Why splitting Windows is Nadella's first major mistake
"Platform Morphing beats Platform Abandonment. You don’t split a platform, even when it is old. You renovate it (see e.g. IBM with Z/OS), you re-platform it (see Microsoft with Windows 10), you innovate (see Apple OS X) or you morph it to where it needs to be and where to evolve towards. Nadella is right that in the very long run, the PC is dead. And certainly, the cloud and the edge are showing more growth. But the industry has not come up with an alternative to the PC - yet. You can call the Chromebooks something else than a PC, but the form factor, connectivity is practically the same device. This is where Windows may have to morph, to maybe a browser based OS, and Microsoft has very much the assets (and the ambition) in play with Edge. And a micro Edge browser could very well work on the IoT edge. Wait – we have even have a perfect branding head line – Microsoft Edge for the IoT Edge – with all the good Windows DNA should that IoT edge platform need to get a little more beefier. Wait there is also Windows Server… so morph, position… even “embrace and extend” – remember that? Why no more in 2018?"

IBM ML comes to Swift - IBM has been closely working with Apple on Swift, pretty much since the launch of Apple's new programming language. The joint solutions are built on the platform, and given the IBM push on cognitive / Watson / ML / AI, it's key that developers on the Swift platform that are building applications in and for the IBM ecosystem can leverage IBM AI / ML services for the iOS applications. "Subject Expertise beats Celebrity. Yes, user conferences are also about inspiration. But a shows star, soap operate protagonist or a talk show host - is not something an enterprise software user can relate to for their work and why they spend 3-4 days and a few thousand budget dollars / euros to come to a conference. Vendors show offer subject matters, if push comes to shove from the user base. There is instant validation, trust and respect from a user to another user presenting. Dealing with convergence of marketing ops and sales ops. As new business models emerge and B2B and B2C models converge to P2P approaches, the traditional functional fiefdoms of marketing and sales seem quite antiquated. Organizations must decide if inside sales should belong in marketing or customer success reside with sales. "You can’t build out a cloud in the real world without massive CAPEX investment. Look at the AWS / Amazon, Microsoft Azure and Google numbers. On the flip side Oracle execs are smart enough to not throw good money after bad money – e.g. put CAPEX $s in a non-working cloud infrastructure. So, at any chance given to me since 2014 I asked CEO Mark Hurd – when will Oracle spend more CAPEX? The answer has always been evasive… But at its OpenWorld conference, Oracle unveiled the 2nd generation of its IaaS solution. It now seems to get the CAPEX it needs to get real."

Event Report - Cloud Foundry CF Summit 2017 - Microsoft joins the kingdom - by @holgermu
"Microsoft joins the kingdom, SAP makes mark – Last year I referred to Cloud Foundry as the ‘King of PaaS’ – due to the lack of competition, most prominently in regards of the platform’s uptake by industry players that in another era would have built their own platform. And certainly not adopted an open source project. So, along the analogy, Cloud Foundry sees Microsoft joining the kingdom. While all partners are important, Microsoft is almost the last data point (Oracle is the last major player still standing out – formally) to join. Microsoft is a key win for CloudFoundry due to the vendor’s long history as development tool, platform product vendor and of course as owner of the Windows franchise. It also helps Microsoft as it gives its customers a (lower level) PaaS as go to location. Coupled with the expanded SAP presence and keynote by CTO Goerke it gives CloudFoundry more chops, most importantly adding two more cloud platforms with Azure and the SAP Cloud."

As founder Parker Harris correctly observed, IaaS was not around when Salesforce was started… but by now it is best practice for a SaaS (and PaaS) provider to be based on an IaaS and leave the heavy lifting (and investing) to the IaaS players."

Q4 2016 NextGen Apps Developments & Trends Shootout - by @holgermu
It can't get much better for AWS - with two events sparring with each other. And while the AWS and VMware partnership could be the latter vendor's 'last hurray' in regards of vitalization, it also shows the market influence AWS has by now (read here). But nothing showed that more than AWS reInvent. AWS is not slowing down and the conference has become the IT world get together, replacing VMworld (minus the hardware vendors) read here. "

Why A Bi-Modal Approach to Digital Transformation Is Just Stupid - by @rwang0
"Like fake news, the over hyped, bi-modal approach to IT and digital transformation is a flawed fallacy perpetuated by ivory tower, non-pragmatic legacy research firms. Lessons learned from successful digital transformation projects emphasize an organizational design comprised of six key virtual or physical teams."

Event Report - AWS reInvent 2016 - Growth at full speed - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, AWS was not able to deliver a major ‘All in’ customer to the two keynotes, admittedly GE is a tough act to follow, but I would have expected to see more public traction. Instead we had repeat keynote presenters, e.g. FINRA. Nothing wrong with this, good to see an update. The event was well visited from an international perspective, but apart from ENEL, I didn’t recall non-North American customers presenting."

"The race for cloud load is in full swing and PaaS is a key offering for vendors to get enterprises on their respective cloud infrastructures. Coupled with the need of building their own applications to take advantage of the new best practices in the 21st century, PaaS is likely to make a difference which cloud / IaaS to choose."

"On the concern side Microsoft still has steps ahead to become an enterprise level PaaS that starts with analysis, design capabilities, does requirement collection, end to end test automation etc. It will be interesting and potentially very powerful to see Visual Studio and Teams come together. I maybe wrong, but it always seems to me that Microsoft is about the developer (nothing wrong with it) and less about the enterprise that needs to build a next generation application."

Event Report - Salesforce Dreamforce #df16 - It's not about Einstein - but the platform - by @holgermu
On the concern side, time is off the essence for Salesforce. Key competitors in e.g. CRM as well as platform have made that move already and do not have to pay the tax for a dual platform in all phases of the software development lifecycle. The problem is that Salesforce product development speed is not moving breathtaking fast, e.g. an indicator is that the Sales Cloud has not fully moved to the new Lightning user experience / platform, that was announced …. at Dreamforce… 2014."

News Analysis - SAP acquires Altiscale: It's not about BigData, but Next Gen Apps - by @holgermu
"A good move by SAP – that needed to have native Hadoop, HDD based BigData capabilities to operate use cases where in memory was either commercially or not even technically feasible. With Altiscale SAP now only addresses this part – but also the know how challenge that is surrounding BigData. At Constellation we see more than 66% of BigData project that are live and delivering value seeing interruption because of know how issues, vendor changes, new software, new consultants etc. So SAP gains both product capabilities and services capabilities, the combination is crucial."

News Analysis: Plex Adds Supply Chain Planning With DemandCaster Acquisition - by @rwang0
"Prospects can keep Plex in the short lists for Manufacturing Cloud. While large vendors such as Oracle and SAP try to move down market, prospects continue to complain about the high cost of ownership and complexity despite a cloud delivery. Smaller competitors Rootstock and Kenandy still lack the full functionality of Plex. Netsuite’s acquisition by Oracle may cause some distractions during post-merger integration. The result – limited players in the space."

News Analysis: Acquisition Brings Salesforce Customers To The Commerce Party - by @rwang0
" Salesforce outbid many competitors to win over Demandware. The acquisition gives Salesforce.com ammo to fend off IBM Smarter Commerce and Hybris deals, despite Hybris mostly being on-premises based. The future of CRM includes commerce because at the end of the day, conversion rate optimization matters. Going forward, Salesforce could include the B2B commerce space adding partners such as Avangate, Cloud Craze, and Digital River as part of the overall industry vertical strategy. Meanwhile, expect Adobe and Microsoft to step up their efforts around B2C and B2B commerce."

Event Report - CloudFoundry CloudFoundry Summit - It's good to be king of PaaS - by @holgermu
"On the concern side, much to this analyst’s dismay who always tries to paint a balanced picture, there is very little to be concerned about. Not being too religious on the paradigm of pair programming is a key course for CloudFoundry, and I heard almost no ‘this way or the highway’ messaging on this at the summit. So the analysis needs to go more into the platform direction, where trends like AI / Machine Learning and the size of compute virtualization (VMs vs micro services) are features / capabilities that the vendor needs to approach and implement the right way, in order to avoid missing out on future ‘attraction’ point to other PaaS players."
