Lossy Optimization for Animated GIFs - Rigor
Yes! Luckily there is a modified version of gifsicle that you can download that can use a lossy encoder to find these near matches, creating a smaller file than if we used a lossless encoder that only uses perfect matches.

Digital Public Library of America » GIF IT UP 2015
Calling all GIF-makers, creatives, history nuts, and animators! GIF IT UP is a challenge coordinated by DigitalNZ and the Digital Public Library of America to find the best GIFs created from copyright-free heritage material.

Following the inaugural GIF IT UP in 2014, the competition returns in 2015, seeking innovative and endlessly looping uses of archival videos and images. This year, the challenge expands internationally with support from Europeana and Trove and features an esteemed line-up of judges, plus some nifty prizes.

Why do you want to make a gif at all?
This story starts with the question of the title. DS106 is a digital storytelling course that amongst many other things teaches to 'stop worrying and learn to love the gif'. As a community not all of us see the point of this particular story telling tool.

This is an attempt to pull out the gif parsing and playing logic, seperate it from the bookmarklet, and publish it as a library that you can use in your project.

As an added bonus, you can make gifs "rubbable" so that scrubbing with your mouse (or rubbing with your finger on a touch device) cause the gif to move back and forth.

A Brief History of Animated GIF Art, Part One
This poses a problem because it means it’s much more difficult to piece together a history of how GIFs have been used in an art context. That history isn’t going to be told in one article, but given the pervasive lack of documentation, an overview is essential before key moments are completely forgotten.

Experiments In Processing. — Exporting sketches as animated GIFs in Processing
there’s now a neat library that one can import into a Processing sketch in order to have it create an animated GIF (without having to save the individual GIFs and then convert them manually): gifAnimation.
