Stargate Atlantis: Wide Open Ocean, by setissma
Summary: He went home with two slices of leftover pizza and the strange impression that McKay could almost have been a nice guy, if he hadn't been an asshole. (Marine biology AU.)
Reccer's Notes: This is one of my favorite comfort reads from SGA. John's alone in the world, still a bit young, still figuring out who he is and want he wants. Enter Rodney being loud and pushy and also a marine biologist. A gentle fic, with lots of nice detail about the Shedd Aquarium and working with animals. Contains the death of a parent.

Harry Potter: Dangerverse series by whydoyouneedtoknow

Living with Danger: What if Harry Potter had not just father figures, but mother figures as well? What if he had siblings? And what about Hermione Granger, or Draco Malfoy? Would they have been different with a different family? What if Sirius Black had a girlfriend named Aletha, his fellow Beater and constant verbal sparring partner? And what if Remus Lupin, one gray March day about five months after his world fell apart, met a woman named Danger who knew things that would change his life forever?

Living without Danger: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger-Lupin, and Draco Black were raised by the surviving Marauders and their wives. They and their friends Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom are off to Hogwarts—heaven help Hogwarts. Twisted canon, Years One and Two.

Dealing with Danger: Take two Marauders and the women who put up with them. Add eight mischievous children, two evil escapees from Azkaban, one wise Headmaster, and a dash of Dark Lord. Shake well and enjoy. Twisted canon, Years Three and Four.

Facing Danger: Weddings and funerals and babies, oh my! Despite the Second War, life goes on for the Pack and the Pride. Harry is determined to beat Voldemort. The only question is, who else will die along the way? Year Five and summer before Year Six.

Surpassing Danger: Harry Potter is Marauder-trained and Warrior-chosen. When he stands united with his Pack and Pride, evil has no chance, but Lord Voldemort is a past master of dividing and conquering… Years Six and Seven.
Reccer's Notes: This series began in 2004 and concluded in 2014; I found it in 2006, and it proceeded to define several years of my life. The series premise is, more or less, accidental baby acquisition in four different manners: inherited, stolen, born, given. The rest is, given how the different upbringings changed the central characters and their relationship dynamics, and given that the antagonists' goals haven't changed at all, how would canon play out? The answer turns out to be with a lot of adventure, a lot of drama, a lot of humor, a lot of emotional roller coaster ride, and a happy ending.

It is not as much of a canon divergence AU as it seems; part of that is because HP6 and HP7 jossed some things in the series—that said, though, she got to a particular plot point in HP7 which flatly contradicted some worldbuilding in chapters she'd already posted, and that contradiction sparked everything that filled the sixth-year-shaped hole in her outline—and part is because it's a stealth crossover. (Very stealth, if one doesn't put together certain bits in volume 5 with one of the author's AUs of this AU series.) It also requires trigger warnings in a number of places; were it on AO3, I expect it'd be under Choose Not To Warn for a lot of reasons. And while there are certainly valid complaints about the quality of the earlier parts, I prefer to say you can watch the writing quality get a decade's worth of improvement in however long it takes you to read two million words!

The X-Files: The Way Things Are by Sukie Tawdry
Summary: One night and their whole lives were changed forever.
Reccer's Notes: I got this rec from fic talk back in the day. [link:] One of the posters there called it "her guilty pleasure story." True confession time: it's mine, too. In her author's notes, Sukie Tawdry wrote, "I began to wonder, what would have happened in the first season, if instead of making Gillian Anderson wear an overcoat in July, 1013 had decided to write her pregnancy into the show."

Her premise is midway through the first season, Mulder and Scully have one night of drunken, unprotected sex, which results in Scully getting pregnant. The story that follows isn't romantic or sappy; instead, it is funny and incisive, poignant and scary. Mulder and Scully even stay in character, once you get past the drunken sex bit. The first season is the only time I thought they had a shot at a "normal" relationship, not that this is a normal relationship, exactly. Season one is my favorite, and damn it, she just nails that season one early partnership vibe, even as it's being complicated by an unexpected pregnancy.

Supernatural RPF: Food Porn by likeanything
Summary: Jensen’s a neurotic sous chef and his roommate Jared’s a disgruntled chef turned blogger turned author who’s just trying to finish his book. Mostly they call each other names, and then they fall in love. And then they call each other names some more.
Reccer's Notes: About a decade ago, despite not being in either Supernatural or its attendant RPF fandom, I came to read several funny J2 AUs. This is one that has stayed with me. It's hilarious, with great characters, but also, if you are addicted to Food Network and/or a foodie who's into cooking, the descriptions of food and cooking are fantastic. Plus, hot make-outs and awkward sex, two elements I love. Jensen is divorced with a kid, who is also funny, but I thought I'd mention it in case it's an issue for anyone.

Star Trek: T'Kay Tales by LJC
Summary: From The Terran Coyote to The Klingon K'Ortar: Tricksters of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants (Revised Expanded 4th Edition).
Reccer's Notes: In the 80s and 90s, there was a string of REALLY GREAT Star Trek: The Original Series novels published. Because Star Trek was by that time such a cultural juggernaut, there were a LOT of really talented writers just itching for the chance to write Star Trek novels. And a surprising amount of what was in those books later became canon (including Sulu and Uhura's first names). (If you're interested, I can give you a list of all the awesome ones you should totally read.)

One such awesome work was Uhura's Song, in which information provided by Uhura sends the Enterprise out on an adventure, which happens to involve a prolonged first contact involving lots of talk about folklore, and specifically trickster-figures, and Spock notes that the trickster figure on Vulcan is called T'Kay. ljc took that and wrote a really interesting ficlet, both exploring what T'Kay folklore might be like, and also what non-Vulcan academics might make of it. You don't have to know anything about the novel to enjoy this fic.

The X-Files: Fata Morgana by Julie Fortune
Summary: None provided by the author.
Reccer's Notes: The idea that Dana Scully is immortal, first advanced in "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," and again in "Tithonus," inspired some of the very best fics in this fandom.

From a great distance, she heard Fox Mulder scream.

Dana Scully jerked awake and in the same second knew Mulder hadn't screamed, wasn't dying, his blood wasn't on her hands. Just a dream, another damned dream.

From the first line, Julie Fortune had me hooked. "Fata Morgana" begins as a crime story, then turns quickly into an X-file, but at its core, this is a portrait of Mulder and Scully's partnership: what they mean to one other and how much they each will risk for the other. It also has one of the most erotic non-sex scenes I have ever read, which I don't want to spoil by saying anything more.

Reccer's Notes: We don't see much of Irma Pince in canon, but oh, she comes to life here! Marks captured that horrible stage of teenagerdom where you desperately want the attention of the person you like but also you'd rather die than expose yourself by asking if they like you back perfectly. Harry Potter: Contemporary Magical Innovations, by H. Granger by kaiz
Summary: The difference between History and What Really Happened.
Reccer's Notes: As with all the entries for this round, a true blast from the past! Over a decade after my first read-through, I have some very strong ethical concerns about the actual magical innovation that forms the backbone of the plot, but other than that it's still a thoroughly enjoyable read, with a slightly crack-y sense of humor that characterizes a lot of the great mid-series HP fics. (I'm not sure when exactly Contemporary Magical Innovations was first posted but the presumed canon backstory seems to diverge around Order of the Phoenix or thereabouts.) The sections of academic prose explaining the historical perspective on what is happening throughout the fic are a lot of fun, and let the story end on just the right note!

Reccer's Notes: The Sacrifices Arc is one of those massive AUs that took over a corner of the Harry Potter fandom for years. The author put Harry in Slytherin, added a twin brother in Gryffindor, and mixed in a great deal of world building about the wizarding world outside of Hogwarts. The result is a surprisingly complex story covering all seven years of this Harry's time at Hogwarts, starting with the fic titled Saving Connor.

The X-Files: Instructions by tree
Summary: Lately, she’d begun a ritual. In every new town she pocketed some small item: a pebble, a leaf. Each one was a memory.
Reccer's Notes: This story blew me away. "Instructions" is a series of eighteen vignettes, structured around lyrics by Veda Hille, which tell the story of their relationship. The first vignette takes place not long after the season nine finale, "The Truth"; the final section takes place during a key scene from the pilot episode. Her use of language is simply beautiful--lyrical but not at the expense of meaning. It is told from Scully's POV but the fic has has strong, well-conceived characterizations of both Mulder and Scully. The link is to AO3; however, it was first posted to Gossamer and LiveJournal. I highly recommend everything tree has written.

Voyager: Talking Stick/Circle by Macedon and Peg
Summary: Chakotay and Tuvok develop a tentative friendship, set against the backdrop of a storytelling group which has grown up spontaneously on Voyager. As Kathryn Janeway tries to adjust to the changes if Voyager created by the presence of the story telling circle, she also tries to deal with her own beliefs about the nature of command... and to help Tom Paris through a rough spot in his own life.
Reccer's Notes: A remarkable "braided novel" of 8 stories and novellas. Too sprawling (in the grand sense) in scale and reach to reduce to a mere synopsis; let us just say that this is what Voyager could have been if TPTB had been willing to seriously deal with the implications of two enemy crews depending on one another, far from home, in a dangerous quadrant. With gripping plots and wonderful characterizations, Macedon and Peg tackled issues of faith, community, alienation and belonging, honest conflict between Maquis and Starfleet, and the realities of life far from home and safety, and all with discretion and grace. This series really explores what life and community are like on board Voyager in a way few fics do, making it into a community that feels real and has depth to it.

The X-Files: Ceremony by Darwin
Summary: What’s left when words fail?
Reccer's Notes: I first heard of "Ceremony" in 2007 via the Fic Talk message board, which was a readers' community to discuss X-Files fanfic. "Ceremony" was posted for discussion as a "one-hit wonder," which wasn't quite fair since the author had written two other fine stories back in the day. You can find them at Gossamer. About a year ago, having returned to the X-Files fandom during the revival, Darwin created an account at Archive of Our Own. And look: She's written more fanfic, too.

"Ceremony" portrays the emotional fall-out from the seventh season episode, "Orison," in a realistic and moving way. (I say "moving" but in point of fact, I was reduced to tears the first time I read it.) However, what is most memorable to me about the fic is its depiction of adult sexuality as both carnal and transcendent.

Fortunately his old friend Flim is on hand to straighten things out. Crossover between P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster and Dorothy Sayers Lord Peter Wimsey.
Reccer's Notes: Adina deftly melds the two sources, both in tone (Wimsey is usually darker than the light-hearted Wooster) and style of story (girls looking for husbands, imperious aunts, and light-hearted capers of Wooster's world populate the more serious crime of Wimsey's). Adina's story also provides the best reason I've seen for why Bertie Wooster never mentions World War I in any of his stories, despite being of the generation to have fought in the trenches.

Reccer's Notes: This is an AU take on how Diana came to Man's World, and why. I love how well everyone is written; even though the relationships are different, they all sound like themselves. Bruce is the professional paranoid that we all know and love (and seeing him through the eyes of a Diana who doesn't know he's Batman brings an unexpected dimension to the story and to both their characters). Diana is strong, determined, and while she doesn't know enough about Man's World to pick up on all the undercurrents, she's a canny operator in her own right who accomplishes her goals with flair and directness. I love the ending!

The X-Files: Letters Lost in the Fire by onpaperfirst
Summary: Since none was provided by the author, here's the opening for you to sample:
"This came across my desk."

He was so full of shit sometimes.

From the Philadelphia field office, from Billings, Montana, or Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from a detective in Albany who went to school with Reggie Purdue. "I'm a popular guy," he would say with a self-deprecating shrug, fidget with the knot of his tie. Flash her a smile. He was a go-getter, you had to give him that.

If she were her friend, she would've told herself to run far, far away from him a long, long time ago. That’s the kind of friend she was, back when she had friends.

She wouldn't usually have let him talk her into this. No, wait. For one thing, that makes it sound exciting, and it isn't. And it also isn’t true. He'd somehow managed to talk her right into her mid-thirties without blinking. But it's the weekend, for one, and this also is not currently her job. Or his. She supposes Mulder is her job in a larger, cosmic sense, but that idea doesn’t bear thinking about for too long.

Reccer's Notes: Written in 2008 (during the fandom's mini-renaissance before The X-Files second movie), "Letters Lost in the Fire" was one of onpaperfirst's first posted fics. Although it never got the accolades of her later, shippier fic, I think it's one of her best and most original. As much as I love this fic, it fit none of the previous fancake themes, so I'm happy to get the chance to rec it this round.

The story is set early in the sixth season, before Mulder and Scully get the X-files back. To my ear, her characters sound just like the Mulder and Scully from the show I adored, bought on DVD, and have watched obsessively ever since, but with a fresh interpretation. Yes, Mulder wants to go off and investigate X-Files off the books, but through negotiation, Scully is a full participant, not merely his reluctant side-kick. I like that. A lot. This writer is great at the small details that make a story come alive. Although onpaperfirst has an AO3 account (yay!), this fic has never been cross-posted (why?), hence the link to LJ. Go read everything she's written. She's excellent.

The X-Files: Iolokus series by Rivkat and MustangSally
Summary: Painted across the barren and desolate reaches of Texas, the shadows of the Project put additional pressure on Scully and Mulder's already fragile relationship. After a hostage crisis raises more questions about the Project's breeding program, Scully begins her own investigation, leaving Mulder to choose between saving her and saving himself. Finally, the investigation leads to tragedy and Mulder and Scully find that more questions have been asked than answered.

The title reference was to an island mentioned in Medea, to which we turned for fairly obvious reasons.

Take the warning seriously: extreme violence, including the death of children.
Reccer's Notes: I've been reccing fic on and off at fancake since February 2012. This means that many of the classic stories I love most dearly have already been recced, in some cases more than once. So for this challenge, I decided there would be no reruns.

Looking through the recs I posted previously, I was shocked by my omission of "Iolokus" by Rivkat and MustangSally. Since it was first posted in 1998, "Iolokus" has been recced/discussed/dissected everywhere else in fandom. Of course, it has its own page at Fanlore. Of course we discussed it at xf_book_club back in the day. Someone even made a trailer for it and posted it to YouTube.

"Iolokus" (Watch on YouTube)

I have finished my fourth reread of the entire series and it still works for me, as an enthralling, complex, genre-busting novel, and as a feminist critique of The X-Files itself.

Lord of the Rings: Rider of the Mark by ZeesMuse
Summary: What's a HorseLord to do when his King and his best friend decide he needs more than a horse to keep him company? And nooooo... running off to hide in Mordor is NOT an option!
Reccer's Notes: The facetious summary is from the fic's entry, but the story contains strong characterization of Gamling and the folk in his life. Gamling's honor deserves a place on the list of characters, too, and this long read is worth the time. The author creates her Riderverse with aplomb, a grand sense of fun and romance galore, plus there's action. It's a good example of how a fandom grabs hold of one by the, er, culet, to let inspiration flow.

Summary: “Angels are terrible things, my Spike. Demons of the light they are, with steel tipped pinions and hair like candyfloss that cuts your tongue to ribbons. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: In League with Serpents by WeyrWolfen
Summary: When Spike wins something unexpected over a game of cards, he ends up with a most unlikely crypt-mate and a mission to help a newly resurrected Buffy. With an empathic serpent setting up shop in his head, a scheming warlock on his tail, and a bothersome change in his relationship with the Scoobies, Spike finds himself in the position to save the slayer he loves, the world, and maybe himself in the offing.
Reccer's Notes: AKA the S6 AU where Spike acquires a fire lizard. This story is plotty, full of neat worldbuilding, and is a gentler yet still emotionally complicated take on S6. It was written late enough that I think a lot of people were already out of the fandom, but it remains one of my favorite longform Buffy fics. The sequel, Feathers and Forked Tongues, is also delightful.

Reccer's Notes: So yes, this has Dawn/Ethan, and also intimacy and sexiness and magic. It's also a coming of age fic about Dawn, her origins, and her future than about her relationship with Ethan. Hep takes the ill-fitting pieces of the Buffyverse worldbuilding and builds something much richer and stranger out of them. This fic absolutely blew my socks off.

Reccer's Notes: I read a lot of Tenipuri fanfic in high school, most of which was, in retrospect, total garbage (as befits a canon that is as objectively garbage as Prince of Tennis, tbh), but I've always remembered trixiechick's vampire AU fondly, and I was pleasantly surprised when I reread it on a whim a couple years ago to realize it's actually a delightful and well-written mish-mash of vampiric anguish and high school mutual pining. Should you read this fic if you hate vampires and/or high school settings? No, absolutely not. But if you enjoy either of those things, it is delicious trope city. Reccer's Notes: There's so much to love about this fic. There's the way Liviapenn has perfectly captured all the character voices. There's the mini-adventure on patrol that might have come straight out of an episode. But most of all, there is a Bruce finally dealing with some of his issues. Batman: Able to Succeed, by Betty
Summary: "Assume success," says Bruce unencouragingly. "Describe how it's achieved."
Reccer's Notes: Betty has been one of my favorite DC fic authors for a long time, and this fic is why. She has the characters down cold. In this fic, Bruce is training Tim to be Robin. But it's not about the physical stuff, it's about the mental stuff. It's about strategy. Because of course, Bruce isn't a top-level hero because of his physical prowess; he (and all his robins) are standard humans, not metas. The reason they succeed so often is not their bodies but their brains, and this is how they get that way. And I love the ending.

Babylon 5: Deceptions, by eye-of-a-cat
Summary: He was a child the first time he saw a war cruiser. He remembers clinging to his teacher's robes, a fistful of gold cloth keeping him anchored and safe, but he remembers the ship itself better. Blue on white, all arcs and smooth, soaring curves, as though it was sculpted out of crystal, as though it was some rare and graceful bird wheeling round above them. Even then, of course, he knew what it really was, but faced with its beauty the knowledge thinned away like smoke.

In Torchwood canon, Ianto Jones has a pocket watch he is very fond of. You can see where fandom would go with this, I hope. I know of two fics where Ianto is a pocketwatched Time Lord, and both are excellent. due South: "Hawks and Hands" by Dira Sudis
Summary: Eighteen sex scenes strung together with angst and hockey.
Reccer's Notes: This is such a classic of the (pick several) fandom, genre, form that I never totally know what to say when introducing it to new readers, so—I guess I'll start from the basics. This is a due South AU in which Fraser and Kowalski are professional hockey players, and fourteen years later, you can find its fingerprints all over both due South fanworks and hockey RPF. It's also extensively footnoted for the new-to-hockey: I recently had occasion to introduce my partner to it to help her cement a beginner's introduction to hockey as a sport. I am not joking about this even a little bit. It helps that it's worth a read even if you care about hockey not at all: "Hawks and Hands" is also just a very long, very meaty and satisfying read, and one of those stories that you'll find yourself coming back to over and over, for the trip it takes you on down-down-down into some very dark places, and then back up again.

Reccer's Notes: One of the interesting bits of Star Trek worldbuilding is the question of computer programs, holograms, sentience, and rights. This story explores that in a really interesting way. Reccer's Notes: It's incredible to think about the advances in vidding technology that have happened since the early 2000s and then look back at what charmax was putting out ten, fifteen years ago. The artistry, the musicality, the flow -- newer stuff has higher resolution but the craft is already there, and it's gorgeous. The thesis of this vid is really simple but it's so visually appealing! Star Wars: Good Fertilizer, by Jane Jinn
Summary: What happens to those who are raised in the Jedi Temple, but aren't picked to become padawans?
Reccer's Notes: The prequels established that people entered the Jedi Order as very small children, and the now-de-canonized Jedi Apprentice books said that anyone who wasn't claimed as a padawan by the age of 13 was removed from the Order and sent into the Service Corps, mostly to become farmers. Which caused a lot of brows to raise among fans, because why? Jane Jinn takes that concept and does some lovely worldbuilding with it.

Besides the charm and witty banter, he was a very lightly-sketched chameleon that adapted to just about any situation the show came up with. In this case, James Marsden played Scott Summers in X-Men and Richard White in Superman Returns. Katt took that fact, did some interesting worldbuilding, and wrote a great series.

Stargate Atlantis: A Beautiful Lifetime Event, by astolat
Summary: Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.
Reccer's Notes: This was one of the first stories I read in this fandom, and it's a great introduction because it showcases the pure crack that Stargate Atlantis runs on. John and Rodney accidentally make a baby in an Ancient incubator. Fact: A good two-thirds of SGA fic can be summarized by filling in the blanks: (Character(s)) accidentally (verb phrase) when exposed to an Ancient (thing). So this story prepares you for that by shoving the baby machine premise right in your face and not giving you time to run away. The writing sucks you in, and the John/Rodney relationship keeps you there; it's a long, slow romance, the kind where they love each other first, and figure out the sex later. Atlantis feels like a real community, with people and kids and lizards that spit. It's just a great story, and one I frequently return to when I need some comfort.

BtVS, Star Trek TNG: Legend by ShayneT
Summary: Trapped by an alien collector, Lieutenant Commander Data discovers an early 21st century android excavated from the ruins of Sunnydale and a capsule containing the frozen body of one of the Eugenic wars most notorious figures...Buffy Summers.
Reccer's Notes: So technically this one was posted in 2011 and so is under 10 years old, but I'm counting it since it's sadly not on the creator's AO3 account. This fic is, without a doubt, the best crossover I've read. It beautifully blends the Buffyverse with the world of TNG and oh, the characters! Everyone is on point. No off-brand Buffys for this fic! Plus we get to see far-future Spike and seeing our vamps many years in the future is one of my favorite tropes in Buffyverse fanfic. Also, this really reads like a novel. The central conflict is solid, it's got great action, and a satisfying resoltion that plays fairly with the rules of both universes and the crossover that's been established. Plus, while it is gen, there are some nice little hints at Spike/Buffy, if I remember correctly. Not to mention the Buffybot/Data relationship it creates, which is just really sweet.

This story also has a special place in my heart because it was at the top of the first ever rec-list that I dug up when I was asking: "Fanfic, that's a thing right? I wonder if any of it's any good..." I had no idea what I was getting into.

Stargate Atlantis/SG1: Free 'Verse, by Dasha mte
Summary: Rodney was finalizing the physical sciences packing list for the Daedalus (for the eighth time, because his weight limit would only accommodate a third of the items he needed and no matter how he adjusted the list, what had to be left behind was heart-breaking) when Dr. Jackson came in waving a computer print-out and looking caught between bemused and sheepish.
Reccer's Notes: This is one of my favorite short fics, and I'm happy to finally have a category to rec it in. It's fun, it's got great characterization, a little bit of interesting worldbuilding, and it feels like it could have been an episode of the show.  fandom:stargate:atlantis  pairing:(gen).no.pairing  character:rodney.mckay  character:sam.carter  length:01.000-5.000.words  creator:dasha_mte  reccer:beatrice_otter

Summary: Andy met Sid when he was four years old, and while some things change, a lot of things stay the same. (In 3 parts on LJ: Under the Table and Dreaming, To the Dogs or Whoever, & The Second Most Important Person in the World).
Reccer's Notes: I didn't think I wanted this fic, but it's kind of epic and amazing. Definitely give it a chance if you're curious :)

Buffy: the Ballad of Charles Whitman (The Apocalypse Redux)
Summary: Can you live in a post-apocalyptic world of one? Not in the dazed sole survivor sense, crawling around the rubble like Burgess Meredith in that Twilight Zone ep. Like this: wandering around in yet another bright, sunny California day, discovering one by one the pieces of yourself that have been stripped away forever.
Reccer's Notes: nwhepcat is one of my favorite Buffy authors, and this is one of my favorite of their fics. It feels like a plotline that could have been part of the show, and I love the way the author writes the characters with all their canonical flaws and bad points, but without ever crossing the line into bashing. It makes it feel very real and true to the show. If you don't like exploring the ambiguity or questionable decisions of the show, this isn't for you; but on the other hand even while leaning head-on into a few of the show's dark places, nobody is evil or a villain.

Summary: The mutant telepathic attack on the world's population in X-Men: United has some unusual repercussions at Princeton-Plainsboro.

Stargate Atlantis: Treed, by panisdead
Summary: After the initial impact, there was a lot of thrashing and screaming from McKay, who claimed to have broken all his ribs and punctured a lung and was afraid of heights and generally went on until Ronon thought he might have to knock him out to keep them from falling any farther.
Reccer's Notes: This is a lighthearted bit of fun that really gets the characters and sounds like it could have been a missing scene from the show.

The X-Files: Devil in a New Dress by eliade
Summary: "I know that 'Small Potatoes' seems to imply that Mulder and Scully have never really sat around drinking and shooting the bull. But to that I say: bull. Of course they have. Scully just forgot. I suspect her alien abduction caused selective retrograde amnesia. It happened sometime in the first several months of their deepening acquaintance. More or less like this...."
Reccer's Notes: Anna S wrote one of my favorite XF fics: In a Dark Time, a sexy, twisted, bleak re-imagining of "Sleepless" that is my M/K head canon. "Devil in a New Dress" is nothing like that, although the characters are essentially the same people. This is set early in the first season and it is a hoot.

The X-Files: Where to Look by Buckingham
Summary: A fashionable look at the evolution of a relationship. Spoilers: Season 7. Set post "all things" but prior to "Requiem."
Reccer's Notes: Buckingham is better known for her angsty seasons seven, eight, and nine fics; at the xf-book-club, I believe we discussed The Laws of Coming and Going. While the angst-and-romance stories are excellent, I also enjoy her lighter approach to MSR (Mulder/Scully romance).

The X-Files: Hardball, by Missy Pennington
Summary: Uh."Withheld at author's request." Here's amyhit's summary from xf_book_club: "There’s formal wear, there’s dancing, there’s UST, there’s miscommunication, there’s jealousy, there may or may not be intoxication (I can’t remember, but there probably is), the lone gunmen get involved, heck, even Phoebe Green makes an appearance! C’mon, try it. You might like it."
Reccer's Notes: Back in 2012 when amyhit posted "Hardball" to xf_book_club, I wrote a 500 word essay, in comments, complete with illustrations, defending Special Agent Dana Scully's right to wear a sexy dress without being slut-shamed, and purchase a pair of $500 red Manolo Blahniks without being labeled an out-of-character spendthrift. The shopping trip is the best part of this cute MSR fic.

Summary: When Oz and Xander return from Africa, Oz discovers that a lot more has changed than he ever dreamed of. Xander and Dawn find themselves undergoing some changes as well.
Reccer's Notes: If you're a Buffy fan and you've never read nwhepcat's stories, you should. They're really good at writing post-canon stories that project out different ideas of who the characters might grow into. This story is an interesting twist on Xander and Dawn's relationship.

X-men/Spiderman: Office Hours and The Wisdom To Know The Difference, by Tartanshell
Summary: Peter Parker learns a lot from Professor McCoy.
Reccer's Notes: Tartanshell was one of my favorite authors back in the day, and this is a great fic. It's mostly movieverse canon--by which I mean the original X-Men and Spiderman movies from the early 2000s--and Peter Parker is one of Hank's college students. These stories is about helping, and about knowing your limits, and dealing with consequences, and accepting who you are.

Summary: In the interest of recording our hero's intrepid journey from disaster to delicious, and because time warps are always fun, I present to you, Jacksonian Fashion: a visual history of the good, the bad, and the plaid.
Reccer's Notes: This meta is a screencap of every single non-uniform outfit Daniel Jackson wore in the entire ten years of the show, complete with hysterically funny commentary. (Example: "Aah, yes, look! It is the Gigantic Blue Coat of Subterfuge! See how Sam frets over the impending threat, dear readers, but Daniel sits secure, knowing that he has smuggled within the folds of his outerwear personal body armor, several weapons, a sandwich, and a Goa'uld shock grenade. Stargate Atlantis: The Ratio of Burning, by stillane
Summary: They hand over a fully functioning, loudmouthed genius with a penchant for sarcasm and slight irrationality. They get back a fully functioning, polite savant with a penchant for silence and serenity.
Reccer's Notes: This is an extremely emotional story where almost all of the emotion is subtextural. Everyone keeps living their lives because they have to, even when they're broken. It's gorgeous, and heartbreaking, and subtle, and wow.

Highlander: Aidan-verse by Gryphonrhi
Faith, loyalty, friendship, honor... and hatred, jealousy, envy, and desire. War and love, torture and healing -- this isn't even the Game, or not just. This is a line war.
(Summary from Sirocco, one of the later stories in the series, but it does the best job of getting at the sweep and scope of this series.
Reccer's Notes:
These were the stories that drew me out of lurkerdom in the late 1990s. Rhi was one of the first people I met in fandom. I have a vivid memory of being Abroad in 2000, paying by the hour for internet in a seedy cafe, just so I could read the latest chapters of the latest Aidan-story. This series comfort fic, and competency porn, and 'threesomes are often-but-not-always the answer,' and Watcher gossip, and Methos Methosing, and the most amazing array of well-developed and interesting OC's. I love it so much - it is totally time for my biennal re-read.

Smallville: the Identical series, by Lanning
Summary: Lex loses everything, and finds something better.
Reccer's Notes: This was the great beloved behemoth of the Smallville fandom, and I'm surprised it hasn't been recced yet. Lionel Luther clones Lex and sets the clone up in his place; Lex goes to the Kents for shelter. Cue angst, hurt comfort, plotting, and Clexiness.

Stargate SG-1: Eurydice Ascending, by ChristinaK
Summary:One thing changed when Daniel confronted Amonet; and then things kept changing... (A fix-it fic for the end of Stargate SG-1 Season 3.)
Reccer's Notes: I've always wished Sha're had been treated better by the show and by fandom. She was a terrible example of being fridged; in the TV show, she only showed up in a handful of episodes and her entire existence was as something for Daniel to angst over. This is one of a handful of fics that really showed what might have been if she'd been allowed to be a character in her own right and given a chance. Stargate Atlantis: Panthalassa, by sapote
Summary: In free Lantea, eight years after the war ends, all the children look like John Sheppard.
Reccer's Notes: This is my favorite "what if Atlantis were to become independent after they defeat the Wraith" fic. It asks the question "what would have happened if Sheppard died, and Atlantis needed people with the ATA gene?" and comes up with a very interesting answer, and then explores the consequences of it. Great worldbuilding, and I like the way Rodney is written.
