Yuri on Ice: Hood & glove, by Fahye
Summary:
"I don't mess with the fae," Otabek says.

"I'm not asking you to mess with them," JJ flat-out lies.

Reccer's Notes: The king of the fairies has fallen in love with a mortal, and the weather is completely fucked up. Enter Otabek, unassuming and yet ultra-competent hero for hire, tasked by King JJ to put things right...
I loved everything about this story, the writting and the narration through Otabek's wry point of view, the humor, the way it uses very knowingly all the fairytales tropes including Yuuri's shapeshifting, and the neat Tam Lin retelling at the end.
As a plus, the story has gorgeous illustrations by hawberries
A must read!

Mag7 (2016): "Waveson" by VillaKulla
Summary:
/wev sən/

1. Debris on the waves after a shipwreck

2. A son of the waves

Haunted by the war, Goodnight Robicheaux moves to a remote fishing village in the north of Scotland, right at the tail end of WWII. He takes a fishing cabin by the sea, his only neighbours the waves and a curious seal. Goodnight is simply after some peace and solitude, and isn’t expecting much in the way of human company. But even he doesn’t know just how right he’ll be about that.
Reccer's Notes:
Selkie AU! (And yes, the writer does rework selkie lore in a pretty satisfying way to accommodate both the Scottish roots of the myth and Billy's - or at least the actor, Lee Byung-hun's - Korean heritage.)

Full of silvery skies, stormy seas, rustic villages, and windswept cliffs, as you might expect, along with some atmospheric goddamn writing. It's a story about trauma, and healing, and trust, and love. (And also surprise encounters with strange naked men making coffee in the kitchen of your rented cottage.)

Reccer's Notes: I love the way this is written. The voice has a great rhythm to it and sounds exactly like a fairy tale by way of Rodney McKay. This may be my favorite part: It didn't help that he wasn't (and let me throw a parenthetical clause in here to draw this into sharp relief) a very nice person.

Marvel Comics: The Spider Prince and the Morning Star by Traincat
Summary:
“Folks like to say there’s a monster that lives in the forest,” Old Swenson said the next day when Johnny told him his story. Johnny worked in his shop, when Swenson could afford to pay him. He fixed things, clocks and broken carriages. Johnny wasn’t good for much, but he had a hand for repairs. “And that it’ll grant you wishes, for a price. Folks will say anything, after a drink or five. Don’t listen to that kind of foolish talk, Johnny.”

When Johnny makes a deal with the monster that lives in the woods – himself for his sister’s happiness – he doesn’t expect the giant spider to take him to a beautiful castle, or to reveal himself a cursed prince. There’s only one catch: he’s only a man in the darkest night, and Johnny can never see his face.

Chinese mythology: Climbing Mount Kunlun, by salifiable

Reccer's Notes: This story is a lot of fun--mythical, with just the right touch of realism and characters I could identify with. I didn't know anything about Chinese mythology, and not much about Chinese culture, but it was still fun and heart-warming and a really good read. Summary: Bucky Barnes wakes believing he is a golem and learns to be human again surrounded by his people.
Reccer's Notes: This is one of my favorite stories in the "Bucky is more traumatized by HYDRA than in canon" trope. I love it for the way both the story and the characters in it treat Bucky with such kindness, and the way it recognizes that there is no quick fix or magic undo button that will restore Bucky to fully functional human being, and that that is okay. Doctor Who: Warning to Children, by prochytes
Summary: Did you really expect pity from a fairy tale?
Reccer's Notes: Amy Pond has lost her clothes, and goes looking for them - and meets the nurse, the policewoman and the bride. This is a short but haunting story about the power of costume and the merciless quality of fairy tales. I love how Prochytes uses prose sparsely, but still manages to pack a punch with what's going on between the lines, showing us the connection between these four women, and the dangerous, surreal world which links them together.

Mag7 (2016): The Heartstone, by Fontainebleau
Summary:
Once upon a time, in a palace of red glazed bricks at the centre of a fine city, there lived a prince. He was young and he was handsome and he was loved by his subjects, for he strove to rule with a fair and generous hand: but in the wealth of the great palace with its towers and courtyards, its gardens and hunting-park, the prince was lonely.

The story on which this fic is based exists, like all fairytales, in several forms: the best-known is 'The Heart of Princess Joan', though it also appears as 'The Giant Who Kept His Heart in a Paper Bag'; other versions can be found in Tanith Lee's Night's Sorceries and Elizabeth Goudge's Henrietta's House.
Reccer's Notes:
This was written for me for a Secret Santa exchange, so I'm biased - but not that biased, because Fontaine is a superb writer by all metrics. She gifted me a beautifully told romance and adventure quest story, gorgeously lyrical and lush. You don't need to be interested or familiar with Mag7 at all to enjoy it as a standalone fairy tale, but if you are familiar, you'll like how she translated a lot of details from canon to this AU.

Greek Mythology- Beauty and Sleep by kouredios
Summary: So beautiful. The most beautiful. No one else more beautiful. It was a lie.

The night he pierces me with his spindle, I fall asleep. The wall of thorns grows up again around me. I sleepwalk through this new life, through all the duties of a good Akhaian wife. I weave, I spin, I press the olives into oil, I submit to my husband, and I sleep through it all. The household around me may as well be frozen in time for all that I interact with it.

Summary: "So Francis, he gets his cloak and he puts it on the water. Gets his staff, ties it to the cloak ... and he sails anyway. He doesn't know what the hell he's doing, but he sails anyway."
Reccer's Notes: This is a story about the uses of folklore, the functions stories have in society. The most interesting types of minor characters stories in T:tSCC fandom focus on what happens to them on Judgment Day. This particular story follows Martin Bedell, who was a student at a military academy when we saw him on the show. (A military prep school for teens, not one of the service academies.) Skynet sent a Terminator after him, as he was destined to become one of John Connor's right hand men in the Resistance. So, Connor and Derek Reese infiltrated the school to protect Bedell. In the process, Bedell learned about Skynet, and that (no matter what he might want to do with his life) he had to join the military so that he would have the training and expertise necessary when Judgment Day comes. This is his story, preparing for Judgment Day and the Resistance. And this is the story of the stories he tells.

Star Trek: T'Kay Tales by LJC
Summary: From The Terran Coyote to The Klingon K'Ortar: Tricksters of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants (Revised Expanded 4th Edition).
Reccer's Notes: In the 80s and 90s, there was a string of REALLY GREAT Star Trek: The Original Series novels published. Because Star Trek was by that time such a cultural juggernaut, there were a LOT of really talented writers just itching for the chance to write Star Trek novels. And a surprising amount of what was in those books later became canon (including Sulu and Uhura's first names). (If you're interested, I can give you a list of all the awesome ones you should totally read.)

One such awesome work was Uhura's Song, in which information provided by Uhura sends the Enterprise out on an adventure, which happens to involve a prolonged first contact involving lots of talk about folklore, and specifically trickster-figures, and Spock notes that the trickster figure on Vulcan is called T'Kay. ljc took that and wrote a really interesting ficlet, both exploring what T'Kay folklore might be like, and also what non-Vulcan academics might make of it. You don't have to know anything about the novel to enjoy this fic.

Summary: A practical carpenter, Jensen doesn’t believe in magic or fairytales--but when a messenger appears from thin air looking for him, he finds himself drawn into a quest to rescue a man he has no memory of, who just happens to be trapped in a place no one knows how to get to. No pressure, right? Set in modern times with fantasy elements.
Reccer's Notes: A modern re-telling and remix of East of the Sun and West of the Moon, this has such a beautiful dreamy feel! It also has really lush imagery and language, excellent characterizations, and wonderful uses of the side characters (including Sandy, Gen, Misha and Danneel). The romance and slow reveal of Jared and Jensen's relationship is very satisfying. Very easily read as a queer fairytale retelling with original characters if you're not up on SPN RPF.

Star Wars ST: Tactical Surrender by Destinies
Summary: “It was foolish of you to come here,” he says. “You won’t escape this time.”

Rey looks at him, at the Stormtroopers, at the combat walkers. She gives the illusion of thinking it over, and then says, “You’re right."

She presents her wrists to him. “I surrender myself to the authority of the First Order.”

--

Three years after the Battle of Crait, Rey, Resistance hero and teacher to a budding new Jedi Order, once again delivers herself into the hands of the enemy. To provide cover for a maneuver that could deal a serious blow to the First Order, she must gamble with the thing she knows its Supreme Leader wants most: herself.
Reccer's Notes: The author has tagged this with Beauty and the Beast elements and Cinderella elements and I went in with no idea what that would mean in a canon-compliant fic. Then I was like, okay, how have I never noticed that Rey is basically Beauty and Kylo Ren is basically Beast except with less fur and more patricide? (Is the Dark Side the curse? Hmmn, sort of.) It's a delicious tropey rollercoaster of sex and feelings and First Order politicking and a fancy dress ball. Two thumbs up.

Teen Wolf: The Serpent Beguiled Me by AvaRosier
Summary: A reimagining of Red Riding Hood with Chris Argent as the Hunter and Lydia Martin as Little Red. But then again, wolves and girls both have sharp teeth...

“This is what I have ascertained thus far: you have been visiting the elder Mr Hale since August. I want you to understand that men like Peter Hale, they are wolves in the night, looking to take advantage of innocent young women like you…”
Reccer's Notes: This story is hauntingly perfect. It's lyrical, it's gothic, it leaves more to the imagination than it suggests. It stays with you long after you've read it. It's got one of the most nuanced representations of Lydia I've ever read, it's powerful, it's sensual, it's a little bit disturbing. This is probably one of my favourite pieces of fanfic ever. What AvaRosier does in 4000 words is just beautiful.

This pairing can easily be really unethical, but it's handled with a deft hand here and Lydia is time-period appropriate adult (its set in a historical fantasy setting).

Fairytales: Not afraid of all the reasons why we shouldn't try, by lady_ragnell
Summary: The curse on Jan's family has been broken for years, but he's left with a swan's wing and no clear direction for his life. When his sister tells him of Prince Leon, a prince from a nearby kingdom who has just returned from his own curse, he's more than willing to travel and meet him and his new bride, Ida. With Leon and Ida comes Henry, Leon's servant and friend, and together, the four of them muse on curses, the aftermath of them, and just what it takes to get through it all.
Reccer's Notes: No need to know the precises foktales this fic draw from, as the archetypes are often enough: the prince turned into a frog, his princess, the younger son cursed into taking the shape of a swan with all his brothers... The story is not about the fairytales, but what the everafter can looks like when you spent years trapped as an animal, and deals in very clever ways with the afterneath of trauma. I really enjoyed the wordbuilding and the way the author wrote her characters.
