IPA | Binet and Field outline key formulas for brand building in context
The IPA’s latest publication from Les Binet and Peter Field, Effectiveness in Context, provides advertisers with a self-help manual for brand building according to a brand’s market category, business model, life-stage and size. The pioneering work includes three tables of values to help advertisers calculate their: optimum brand building to sales activation ratio, budget setting, and target ROMI. It was published today (9 October 2018) as part of the cross-industry Eff Week conference, spearheaded by the IPA.

Pantsdrunk, the Finnish Art of Relaxation
You’ve likely heard of hygge, the Danish word for a special feeling of coziness that’s been productized on Instagram and elsewhere to within an inch of its charming life. The Finns have a slightly different take on the good life called kalsarikännit, which roughly translates to “pantsdrunk” in English. A promotional site from the Finnish government defines it as “the feeling when you are going to get drunk home alone in your underwear — with no intention of going out”. They made the emoji above to illustrate pantsdrunkenness.

Tools to make narrative games – Vagrant Cursor
Since I have to keep up with a variety of tools for narrative games and interactive narrative, I have decided to share the list of resources that I keep. This post will be a living document, so I will update as I come across new tools.

Mailbag: Self-Training in Narrative Design | Emily Short's Interactive Storytelling
Okay, so. This is a two-part question. I’m going to break it across two posts. This post will focus on “how do you flex core IF muscles.” I’ll come back next month to the question of skills for adaptation specifically.

The questioner asks about “a mastery of interactive thinking,” not about writing skills, so I’m going to assume the author feels comfortable on topics like prose and character development, and is more interested in understanding and practicing narrative design across multiple media. It also seems to be a design-focused question rather than a tools- or coding-focused question.

So I’ll try to tackle this from two angles: what are the things you might want to learn, and how might you learn them?

Useful Posts for Writers · Failbetter Games
Over the years, we’ve published a great deal of information on writing for interactive fiction. Some of the posts are pretty old – and our thinking has moved on. But it’s interesting to see how our thoughts have evolved – and there’s stuff to be gleaned even from the earliest posts.

I’ve collated the most-relevant posts – I don’t want to link to everything that’s ever been put on this site, though there’s gold (if sometimes iron pyrite) in many I’ve ignored. If I’ve missed anything we’ve posted that you’ve found particularly helpful, please do let me know and I’ll update this.

How To Survive As A Game Writer — Greg Buchanan
Before you read the following, my previous article 'How To Become A Games Writer' might be useful for context and initial steps in gaining a foothold in the industry.

This article, however, is about how to survive once you're here. The following points are a series of observations I made during the aforementioned talk, probably lacking some of the original delivery but hopefully still of use to those who may read them!

A 46-Foot-Tall Minotaur Roams the Streets of Toulouse, France in La Machine’s Latest Urban Opera | Colossal
The French creative company La Machine recently premiered their latest creation, a nearly 50-foot-tall robotic Minotaur, in Toulouse, France. The beast marched through the labyrinthine streets of the city’s old town accompanied by a 42-foot spider for the group’s latest production The Guardian of the Temple. The pair of machines performed an operatic interpretation of the myth of Ariadne, a Cretan princess who helped Theseus overcome the Minotaur, to live music. These impressive kinetic sculptures are La Machine’s latest project from their oeuvre of mechanical bestiary which has operating worldwide since 1999.

VSD: home
Tools and technologies are fundamental to the human condition. Increasingly, they constitute the infrastructure through which people from diverse communities and nations engage in dialog, educate their children, gain access to resources and systems of justice, conduct business, participate in government, and any number of other activities at the core of human society. At stake is no less than what people in their specific localities and societies experience as fair, as caring, as intimate or personal, as dignity, as property, as community, and so the list goes on. Such tools and technologies are also the result of human imagination. Yet, with our limited view, it is not at all obvious how to design tools and technology so that they are more likely to support the actions, relationships, institutions, and experiences that human beings care deeply about.

Value sensitive design seeks to provide theory and method to account for human values in a principled and systematic manner throughout the design process. Central to a value sensitive design approach are analyses of both direct and indirect stakeholders; distinctions among designer values, values explicitly supported by the technology, and stakeholder values; individual, group, and societal levels of analysis; the integrative and iterative conceptual, technical, and empirical investigations; and a commitment to progress (not perfection).

Papa Nito Loves You — Listening Post is an art installation by Mark...
Listening Post is an art installation by Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin that culls text fragments in real time from thousands of unrestricted Internet chat rooms, bulletin boards and other public forums. The texts are read (or sung) by a voice synthesizer, and simultaneously displayed across a suspended grid of more than two hundred small electronic screens. Listening Post cycles through a series of six movements, each a different arrangement of visual, aural, and musical elements, each with it’s own data processing logic. Dissociating the communication from its conventional on-screen presence, Listening Post is a visual and sonic response to the content, magnitude, and immediacy of virtual communication.

Announcing Better Worlds: a science fiction project about hope - The Verge
Contemporary science fiction often feels fixated on a sort of pessimism that peers into the world of tomorrow and sees the apocalypse looming more often than not. At a time when simply reading the news is an exercise in exhaustion, anxiety, and fear, it’s no surprise that so many of our tales about the future are dark amplifications of the greatest terrors of the present. But now more than ever, we also need the reverse: stories that inspire hope.

That’s why, starting on January 14th, we’ll be publishing Better Worlds: 10 original fiction stories, five animated adaptations, and five audio adaptations by a diverse roster of science fiction authors who take a more optimistic view of what lies ahead in ways both large and small, fantastical and everyday.

Law of triviality - Wikipedia
Parkinson's law of triviality is C. Northcote Parkinson's 1957 argument that members of an organization give disproportionate weight to trivial issues.[1] Parkinson provides the example of a fictional committee whose job was to approve the plans for a nuclear power plant spending the majority of its time on discussions about relatively minor but easy-to-grasp issues, such as what materials to use for the staff bike shed, while neglecting the proposed design of the plant itself, which is far more important and a far more difficult and complex task.

The law has been applied to software development and other activities.[2] The term bike-shed effect or bike-shedding was coined as a metaphor to illuminate the law of triviality; it was popularised in the Berkeley Software Distribution community by the Danish computer developer Poul-Henning Kamp in 1999[3] and has spread from there to the whole software industry.

What is branded content in the digital age?
As a medium branded content has been receiving a lot of attention over the last few years, largely in response to the new ways that people can consume content. This, in turn, has fueled its rise as a new marketing communications concept, and one that many people are confused about, prompting the question, “what is branded content?”

DREAM DESTINATIONS: A Disney Travel Poster Exhibition - Artwork - Nucleus | Art Gallery and Store
One of the many things that make animated Disney movies so memorable are the exotic locations. Some are real, like Paris in Ratatouille. Others are fantasy, like Arendelle in Frozen. But no matter if the settings are real or fictional, the places in those movies are places we’d love to visit.

That’s where “Dream Destinations” comes in. It’s a new exhibit of Disney travel posters presented by Gallery Nucleus and Cyclops Print Works. Artists from all over captured their favorite Disney locations in stunning visual styles, and here are just a few of our favorites.

Selling Creativity Short: Creativity and effectiveness under threat
Peter Field's latest investigation into the IPA's databank of Effectiveness Award case studies and The Gunn Report creative awards dataset reveals five key trends:

1. Budget investment behind creativity has fallen sharply.
The average real campaign budget has fallen, with creatively-awarded campaigns hardest hit, to the point where they are below market share maintenance levels.

2. Short-termism is undermining effectiveness.
There has been a dramatic increase in the evaluation of IPA campaigns over six months or less - up by four times over a decade ago. This is bad for effectiveness and bad for brands. Creatively awarded campaigns are even more strongly affected: almost half of them are now short-term campaigns.

3. Cross-channel, digital creativity is not an answer to short-termism.
Creative campaigns designed to work across the analogue/digital divide improve short-term results, but need more time to achieve their full potential and do not offset reduced budgets. Greater effectiveness comes from being put to work over the longer term.

4. The achievement of fame is in decline.
Record low budgets and the shift to the short term have impacted the buzz around brands, meaning fame effects of creatively awarded campaigns have fallen for the first time in 20 years.

5. TV is still the primary driver of creative success.
An idea that can work creatively on TV is shown to be at the heart of the most effective campaigns.

Books for Sharpening Your Strategic Mind – Doug Kleeman – Medium
Recently someone asked me which books every brand strategist should read.

It’s a surprisingly loaded question. The first thought that popped into my head was an embarrassingly butchered-up version of that Haruki Murakami quote: “if you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.” Cheesy, but true.

So, naturally, I reached out to a few friends, former colleagues and other strategists that I admire immensely to ask them which books have helped them sharpen their thinking. You can find the full thread of their recommendations here, but a few notable things that I thought were worth pointing out:

Neil Gaiman: How Stories Last - The Long Now
“‘Once upon a time,’ Gaiman said, “is code for ‘I’m lying to you.’ We experience stories as lies and truth at the same time. We learn to empathize with real people via made-up people. The most important thing that fiction does is it lets us look out through other eyes, and that teaches us empathy—that behind every pair of eyes is somebody like us.“ Stories have their own form of life, Gaiman concluded. “You can view people as this peculiar byproduct that stories use for breeding and transmission. They are symbiotic with us. They are the thing that we have used since the dawn of humanity to become more than just one person.“

Junior Strategy -
We created Junior Strategy to capture the point of view and advice of others.

Some of the most common advice we hear is that finding a good mentor is essential. We believe that direct and indirect mentors are everywhere and that you shouldn’t have just one.

It’s our hope that this project will become a resource to help inspire and grow the junior community the same way a good mentor would. We aim to talk with a variety of insiders in strategic roles, from client side to agency side, from communications to product design. We will also aim to highlight informants, those who inform and inspire our strategic thinking from outside of the industry.

We would love for Junior Strategy to become a community that grows beyond Amsterdam and Europe. If you have ideas or questions that you’d like us to be asking, please get in touch anytime.

What You Think Is A Function Of The Ideas You Consume | APG | Planning & Strategy

The thesis behind our creative consultancy is that one cannot invent without inventory. That’s what Genius Steals means. We took the name from a fauxtation ascribed to Picasso but actually derived from T.S Elliot discussing how one can judge creativity without relying on subjectivity. Good poets draw from diverse inspiration, borrowing from authors “remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest.”

That’s the rule of thumb. Diversity and breadth, because seeing patterns in different things is abstraction, the basis of creative thinking. The more diverse the inputs combined together, the more creative the idea. Your job as a planner is to provide the right inputs.

So what you should you consume and how much?
