What You Think Is A Function Of The Ideas You Consume | APG | Planning & Strategy

The thesis behind our creative consultancy is that one cannot invent without inventory. That’s what Genius Steals means. We took the name from a fauxtation ascribed to Picasso but actually derived from T.S Elliot discussing how one can judge creativity without relying on subjectivity. Good poets draw from diverse inspiration, borrowing from authors “remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest.”

That’s the rule of thumb. Diversity and breadth, because seeing patterns in different things is abstraction, the basis of creative thinking. The more diverse the inputs combined together, the more creative the idea. Your job as a planner is to provide the right inputs.

So what you should you consume and how much?

Mozilla Announces $225,000 for Art and Advocacy Exploring Artificial Intelligence - The Mozilla Blog
At Mozilla, one way we support a healthy internet is by fueling the people and projects on the front lines — from grants for community technologists in Detroit, to fellowships for online privacy activists in Rio.

Today, we are opening applications for a new round of Mozilla awards. We’re awarding $225,000 to technologists and media makers who help the public understand how threats to a healthy internet affect their everyday lives.

Specifically, we’re seeking projects that explore artificial intelligence and machine learning. In a world where biased algorithms, skewed data sets, and broken recommendation engines can radicalize YouTube users, promote racism, and spread fake news, it’s more important than ever to support artwork and advocacy work that educates and engages internet users.

Training future strategic leaders to storm the citadels of mediocrity, incrementalism, and complacency.

Why are we doing this? Because as an industry we're not taking strategy seriously enough. We've underinvested in it for decades. The result today is that strategy is in danger of becoming uncoupled from action. It's swimming ever further downstream, ever more disconnected from real businesses needs. It is being downgraded to a servant of other agendas, like ads and messages and awards. And yet the need for good strategy within both agencies and client organisations is more pressing than ever. In a world of flux and disruption, client businesses are hungrier than ever for clarity and certainty. Strategy is our only means of navigating the complexity of surviving and prospering amidst disruption. And above all, of effecting change on our terms. The world has need of more and better strategic minds. And we needed a hobby.

Randomistas: How Radical Researchers Are Changing Our World: Andrew Leigh: 9780300236125: Amazon.com: Books
Experiments have consistently been used in the hard sciences, but in recent decades social scientists have adopted the practice. Randomized trials have been used to design policies to increase educational attainment, lower crime rates, elevate employment rates, and improve living standards among the poor.

This book tells the stories of radical researchers who have used experiments to overturn conventional wisdom. From finding the cure for scurvy to discovering what policies really improve literacy rates, Leigh shows how randomistas have shaped life as we know it. Written in a “Gladwell-esque” style, this book provides a fascinating account of key randomized control trial studies from across the globe and the challenges that randomistas have faced in getting their studies accepted and their findings implemented. In telling these stories, Leigh draws out key lessons learned and shows the most effective way to conduct these trials.

Economic Science Fictions (PERC Papers): William Davies: 9781906897680: Amazon.com: Books
An innovative new anthology exploring how science fiction can motivate new approaches to economics.

From the libertarian economics of Ayn Rand to Aldous Huxley's consumerist dystopias, economics and science fiction have often orbited each other. In Economic Science Fictions, editor William Davies has deliberately merged the two worlds, asking how we might harness the power of the utopian imagination to revitalize economic thinking.

Rooted in the sense that our current economic reality is no longer credible or viable, this collection treats our economy as a series of fictions and science fiction as a means of anticipating different economic futures. It asks how science fiction can motivate new approaches to economics and provides surprising new syntheses, merging social science with fiction, design with politics, scholarship with experimental forms.

With an opening chapter from Ha-Joon Chang as well as theory, short stories, and reflections on design, this book from Goldsmiths Press challenges and changes the notion that economics and science fiction are worlds apart. The result is a wealth of fresh and unusual perspectives for anyone who believes the economy is too important to be left solely to economists.

Hacking the business with Stephen King | canalside view
King’s model – the ‘consumer buying system’ – appeared in his Manual of Tools of the Trade for Advertising Planners that he developed for JWT in the late 1980s.

It is by no means a panacea. And it certainly cannot solve the systemic dysfunctions of both agencies and client organizations that prevent us from a broader application of creativity. Nonetheless, it can encourage the well-intentioned and the ambitious to ask new, and better questions.

King had developed his model principally as a means of shaping and guiding a communications plan. His focus was largely on both the role and the choice of communications channels.

However, in as much as his model was largely a means of understanding consumer behaviour, its application and value goes far beyond that. As King wrote in his introduction to the model:

The objective is to take your brand, examine the stages in the [Consumer Buying System] and ask, ‘How can we move the consumer through the process?’”

I make no claim for uniqueness in any of what follows. There is many a good marketer who employs their own version of King’s model.

(That said, and by way of a pedantic aside, King’s model predates McKinsey’s model by decades. Thus demonstrating that those who are unaware of history are doomed to repeat it).

An Intricate Circuit Board Formed with Thousands of Miniature Modeling Clay Pieces by Tim Easley | Colossal
For a recent commission from indie record label Albert’s Favourites, London-based designer Tim Easley created an intricate circuitboard completely out of plasticine clay. The finished work measures approximately 20 inches square (50 x 50 cm) and took the artist about 80 hours to complete. He then photographed the clay circuitboard with birds-eye and angled aerial views to create the final album artwork.

Easley created the project for the London-based electronic music duo Modified Man. He describes the work, which envisions an abstracted future perspective on today’s technology, on Behance: “The idea behind the cover was how the modified men of the future may make artwork out of ancient circuit boards, not quite understanding what they were for because of their crude appearance.”

Using Async/Await with Mocha, Express, and Mongoose | www.thecodebarbarian.com
One great perk of async/await in Node.js is how well it integrates with existing libraries. By now, most popular Node.js libraries support some sort of promise-based API, so they integrate nicely with async/await. You might even have the pleasure of removing a few dependencies from your package.json if you start using async/await instead of co. In this article, I'll show you how async/await works with mocha tests, express routes and middleware, and mongoose queries and cursors.

Carl Honoré (In Praise of Slow) says Canada's Baffin Island Inuit "use the same word—'uvatiarru'—to mean both 'in the distant past' and 'in the distant future.' Time, in such cultures, is always coming as well as going." In an essay by Louise Edrich (Two Languages in Mind, but Just One in the Heart), she writes about learning Ojibwemownin and how "nouns are mainly desginated as alive or dead, animate or inanimate...once I began to think of stones as animate, I started to wonder whether I was picking up a stone or it was putting iteslf in my hand." I'm fascinated by language reflecting culture and vice versa. Any reference you've run across in passing or even know about as a multi-lingual MeFite is welcome. An 80/20 Guide to Mongoose Discriminators | www.thecodebarbarian.com
Discriminators are a powerful yet unfortunately poorly documented feature of mongoose. Discriminators enable you to store documents with slightly different schemas in the same collection and query them back in a consistent way. In this article, you'll learn about how to use discriminators to store different types of events. You'll also see how to use the aggregation framework to run rudimentary analyses.

Mongoose v5.0.17: Discriminators
Discriminators are a schema inheritance mechanism. They enable you to have multiple models with overlapping schemas on top of the same underlying MongoDB collection.

Suppose you wanted to track different types of events in a single collection. Every event will have a timestamp, but events that represent clicked links should have a URL. You can achieve this using the model.discriminator() function. This function takes 2 parameters, a model name and a discriminator schema. It returns a model whose schema is the union of the base schema and the discriminator schema.

Getting started with Mongoose discriminators in Express.js
So for this rewrite, I wanted to dig a little deeper in storing data and stop relying on behind-the-scenes magic. This means coming up with a proper data model. I wanted a NoSQL database for flexibility (I might need to add different collection types later!). I opted for MongoDB because it meshes well with Node, and because I wanted to try MongooseJS (looking at the docs, it seemed to provide an easy to understand abstraction layer and spoiler alert: it is pretty neat).

javascript - Multiple schema references in single schema array - mongoose - Stack Overflow
What you are looking for here is the mongoose .discriminator() method. This basically allows you to store objects of different types in the same collection, but have them as distinquishable first class objects.

Note that the "same collection" principle here is important to how .populate() works and the definition of the reference in the containing model. Since you really can only point to "one" model for a reference anyway, but there is some other magic that can make one model appear as many.

mongoose: Referencing schema in properties or arrays | Alexander Zeitler

6 Rules of Thumb for MongoDB Schema Design: Part 3 | MongoDB
This is our final stop in this tour of modeling One-to-N relationships in MongoDB. In the first post, I covered the three basic ways to model a One-to-N relationship. Last time, I covered some extensions to those basics: two-way referencing and denormalization.

Denormalization allows you to avoid some application-level joins, at the expense of having more complex and expensive updates. Denormalizing one or more fields makes sense if those fields are read much more often than they are updated.

Read part one and part two if you’ve missed them.

Merriam-Webster defines trope as a "figure of speech." For creative writer types, tropes are more about conveying a concept to the audience without needing to spell out all the details.

The wiki is called "TV Tropes" because TV is where we started. Over the course of a few years, our scope has crept out to include other media. Tropes transcend television. They reflect life. Since a lot of art, especially the popular arts, does its best to reflect life, tropes are likely to show up everywhere.

ink is a scripting language built around the idea of marking up pure-text with flow in order to produce interactive scripts.

At its most basic, it can be used to write a Choose Your Own-style story, or a branching dialogue tree. But its real strength is in writing dialogues with lots of options and lots of recombination of the flow.

ink offers several features to enable non-technical writers to branch often, and play out the consequences of those branches, in both minor and major ways, without fuss.

The script aims to be clean and logically ordered, so branching dialogue can be tested "by eye". The flow is described in a declarative fashion where possible.

It's also designed with redrafting in mind; so editing a flow should be fast.
