Law of triviality - Wikipedia
Parkinson's law of triviality is C. Northcote Parkinson's 1957 argument that members of an organization give disproportionate weight to trivial issues.[1] Parkinson provides the example of a fictional committee whose job was to approve the plans for a nuclear power plant spending the majority of its time on discussions about relatively minor but easy-to-grasp issues, such as what materials to use for the staff bike shed, while neglecting the proposed design of the plant itself, which is far more important and a far more difficult and complex task.

The law has been applied to software development and other activities.[2] The term bike-shed effect or bike-shedding was coined as a metaphor to illuminate the law of triviality; it was popularised in the Berkeley Software Distribution community by the Danish computer developer Poul-Henning Kamp in 1999[3] and has spread from there to the whole software industry.

What is branded content in the digital age?
As a medium branded content has been receiving a lot of attention over the last few years, largely in response to the new ways that people can consume content. This, in turn, has fueled its rise as a new marketing communications concept, and one that many people are confused about, prompting the question, “what is branded content?”

DREAM DESTINATIONS: A Disney Travel Poster Exhibition - Artwork - Nucleus | Art Gallery and Store
One of the many things that make animated Disney movies so memorable are the exotic locations. Some are real, like Paris in Ratatouille. Others are fantasy, like Arendelle in Frozen. But no matter if the settings are real or fictional, the places in those movies are places we’d love to visit.

That’s where “Dream Destinations” comes in. It’s a new exhibit of Disney travel posters presented by Gallery Nucleus and Cyclops Print Works. Artists from all over captured their favorite Disney locations in stunning visual styles, and here are just a few of our favorites.

Brand Strategy: Build a Business that Lasts | Mark Pollard | Skillshare
In this 45-minute class, Mark shares a unique and insightful approach to building and understanding brands. Using a pen and paper, Mark breaks down every brand into three categories—Product-centric, Customer-centric, and Vision-centric—and draws out frameworks for understanding how brands can develop and thrive within each. Successful brands need a bit of all three, but as the class progresses Mark shows how one of these types of brands continually outperforms the rest and shares how to move your brand towards this model.

Selling Creativity Short: Creativity and effectiveness under threat
Peter Field's latest investigation into the IPA's databank of Effectiveness Award case studies and The Gunn Report creative awards dataset reveals five key trends:

1. Budget investment behind creativity has fallen sharply.
The average real campaign budget has fallen, with creatively-awarded campaigns hardest hit, to the point where they are below market share maintenance levels.

2. Short-termism is undermining effectiveness.
There has been a dramatic increase in the evaluation of IPA campaigns over six months or less - up by four times over a decade ago. This is bad for effectiveness and bad for brands. Creatively awarded campaigns are even more strongly affected: almost half of them are now short-term campaigns.

3. Cross-channel, digital creativity is not an answer to short-termism.
Creative campaigns designed to work across the analogue/digital divide improve short-term results, but need more time to achieve their full potential and do not offset reduced budgets. Greater effectiveness comes from being put to work over the longer term.

4. The achievement of fame is in decline.
Record low budgets and the shift to the short term have impacted the buzz around brands, meaning fame effects of creatively awarded campaigns have fallen for the first time in 20 years.

5. TV is still the primary driver of creative success.
An idea that can work creatively on TV is shown to be at the heart of the most effective campaigns.

Books for Sharpening Your Strategic Mind – Doug Kleeman – Medium
Recently someone asked me which books every brand strategist should read.

It’s a surprisingly loaded question. The first thought that popped into my head was an embarrassingly butchered-up version of that Haruki Murakami quote: “if you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.” Cheesy, but true.

So, naturally, I reached out to a few friends, former colleagues and other strategists that I admire immensely to ask them which books have helped them sharpen their thinking. You can find the full thread of their recommendations here, but a few notable things that I thought were worth pointing out:

Essential books for junior planners – Alex Murrell – Medium
The most common question I get from Junior Planners goes something like this:

“What books can I read to advance my strategic thinking?”
Now, I have my default answer. The two or three books that most influenced me and my thought process. But recently I got thinking, what are the foundational books that every planner should read?

Neil Gaiman: How Stories Last - The Long Now
“‘Once upon a time,’ Gaiman said, “is code for ‘I’m lying to you.’ We experience stories as lies and truth at the same time. We learn to empathize with real people via made-up people. The most important thing that fiction does is it lets us look out through other eyes, and that teaches us empathy—that behind every pair of eyes is somebody like us.“ Stories have their own form of life, Gaiman concluded. “You can view people as this peculiar byproduct that stories use for breeding and transmission. They are symbiotic with us. They are the thing that we have used since the dawn of humanity to become more than just one person.“

Junior Strategy -
We created Junior Strategy to capture the point of view and advice of others.

Some of the most common advice we hear is that finding a good mentor is essential. We believe that direct and indirect mentors are everywhere and that you shouldn’t have just one.

It’s our hope that this project will become a resource to help inspire and grow the junior community the same way a good mentor would. We aim to talk with a variety of insiders in strategic roles, from client side to agency side, from communications to product design. We will also aim to highlight informants, those who inform and inspire our strategic thinking from outside of the industry.

We would love for Junior Strategy to become a community that grows beyond Amsterdam and Europe. If you have ideas or questions that you’d like us to be asking, please get in touch anytime.

What You Think Is A Function Of The Ideas You Consume | APG | Planning & Strategy
A PLANNER’S MEDIA DIET

The thesis behind our creative consultancy is that one cannot invent without inventory. That’s what Genius Steals means. We took the name from a fauxtation ascribed to Picasso but actually derived from T.S Elliot discussing how one can judge creativity without relying on subjectivity. Good poets draw from diverse inspiration, borrowing from authors “remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest.”

That’s the rule of thumb. Diversity and breadth, because seeing patterns in different things is abstraction, the basis of creative thinking. The more diverse the inputs combined together, the more creative the idea. Your job as a planner is to provide the right inputs.

So what you should you consume and how much?

In a world where biased algorithms, skewed data sets, and broken recommendation engines can radicalize YouTube users, promote racism, and spread fake news, it’s more important than ever to support artwork and advocacy work that educates and engages internet users.

Weigel / Campbell
Training future strategic leaders to storm the citadels of mediocrity, incrementalism, and complacency.

Why are we doing this? Because as an industry we're not taking strategy seriously enough. We've underinvested in it for decades. The result today is that strategy is in danger of becoming uncoupled from action. It's swimming ever further downstream, ever more disconnected from real businesses needs. It is being downgraded to a servant of other agendas, like ads and messages and awards. And yet the need for good strategy within both agencies and client organisations is more pressing than ever. In a world of flux and disruption, client businesses are hungrier than ever for clarity and certainty. Strategy is our only means of navigating the complexity of surviving and prospering amidst disruption. And above all, of effecting change on our terms. The world has need of more and better strategic minds. And we needed a hobby.

Randomistas: How Radical Researchers Are Changing Our World: Andrew Leigh: 9780300236125: Amazon.com: Books
Experiments have consistently been used in the hard sciences, but in recent decades social scientists have adopted the practice. Randomized trials have been used to design policies to increase educational attainment, lower crime rates, elevate employment rates, and improve living standards among the poor.

This book tells the stories of radical researchers who have used experiments to overturn conventional wisdom. From finding the cure for scurvy to discovering what policies really improve literacy rates, Leigh shows how randomistas have shaped life as we know it. Written in a “Gladwell-esque” style, this book provides a fascinating account of key randomized control trial studies from across the globe and the challenges that randomistas have faced in getting their studies accepted and their findings implemented. In telling these stories, Leigh draws out key lessons learned and shows the most effective way to conduct these trials.

Economic Science Fictions (PERC Papers): William Davies: 9781906897680: Amazon.com: Books
An innovative new anthology exploring how science fiction can motivate new approaches to economics.

From the libertarian economics of Ayn Rand to Aldous Huxley's consumerist dystopias, economics and science fiction have often orbited each other. In Economic Science Fictions, editor William Davies has deliberately merged the two worlds, asking how we might harness the power of the utopian imagination to revitalize economic thinking.

Rooted in the sense that our current economic reality is no longer credible or viable, this collection treats our economy as a series of fictions and science fiction as a means of anticipating different economic futures. It asks how science fiction can motivate new approaches to economics and provides surprising new syntheses, merging social science with fiction, design with politics, scholarship with experimental forms.

With an opening chapter from Ha-Joon Chang as well as theory, short stories, and reflections on design, this book from Goldsmiths Press challenges and changes the notion that economics and science fiction are worlds apart. The result is a wealth of fresh and unusual perspectives for anyone who believes the economy is too important to be left solely to economists.

Hacking the business with Stephen King | canalside view
King’s model – the ‘consumer buying system’ – appeared in his Manual of Tools of the Trade for Advertising Planners that he developed for JWT in the late 1980s.

It is by no means a panacea. And it certainly cannot solve the systemic dysfunctions of both agencies and client organizations that prevent us from a broader application of creativity. Nonetheless, it can encourage the well-intentioned and the ambitious to ask new, and better questions.

King had developed his model principally as a means of shaping and guiding a communications plan. His focus was largely on both the role and the choice of communications channels.

However, in as much as his model was largely a means of understanding consumer behaviour, its application and value goes far beyond that. As King wrote in his introduction to the model:

The objective is to take your brand, examine the stages in the [Consumer Buying System] and ask, ‘How can we move the consumer through the process?’”

I make no claim for uniqueness in any of what follows. There is many a good marketer who employs their own version of King’s model.

(That said, and by way of a pedantic aside, King’s model predates McKinsey’s model by decades. Thus demonstrating that those who are unaware of history are doomed to repeat it).

An Intricate Circuit Board Formed with Thousands of Miniature Modeling Clay Pieces by Tim Easley | Colossal
For a recent commission from indie record label Albert’s Favourites, London-based designer Tim Easley created an intricate circuitboard completely out of plasticine clay. The finished work measures approximately 20 inches square (50 x 50 cm) and took the artist about 80 hours to complete. He then photographed the clay circuitboard with birds-eye and angled aerial views to create the final album artwork.

Easley created the project for the London-based electronic music duo Modified Man. He describes the work, which envisions an abstracted future perspective on today’s technology, on Behance: “The idea behind the cover was how the modified men of the future may make artwork out of ancient circuit boards, not quite understanding what they were for because of their crude appearance.”

Using Async/Await with Mocha, Express, and Mongoose | www.thecodebarbarian.com
One great perk of async/await in Node.js is how well it integrates with existing libraries. By now, most popular Node.js libraries support some sort of promise-based API, so they integrate nicely with async/await. You might even have the pleasure of removing a few dependencies from your package.json if you start using async/await instead of co. In this article, I'll show you how async/await works with mocha tests, express routes and middleware, and mongoose queries and cursors.

The AxiDraw V3 is a simple, modern, and precise pen plotter, capable of writing or drawing on almost any flat surface. It can write with fountain pens, permanent markers, and a variety of other writing implements to handle an endless number of applications. Its unique design features a writing head that extends beyond the machine, making it possible to draw on objects bigger than the machine itself.

About txt.fyi
This is the dumbest publishing platform on the web.

Write something, hit publish, and it's live.

There's no tracking, ad-tech, webfonts, analytics, javascript, cookies, databases, user accounts, comments, friending, likes, follower counts or other quantifiers of social capital. The only practical way for anyone to find out about a posting is if the author links to it elsewhere.

But it is legible, no-nonsense static hypertext, good for short stories, not-short-enough tweets and adventures and all your numbers station or internet dead drop needs. Here you can scream into the void and know the form of your voice is out there forever.

Search engines are instructed not to index posts and I'll do my best to make sure this isn't used as a tool by spammers or other abusers. Nonetheless, posting will be turned off if anything bad grows out of it.

Use basic Markdown to format posts: #header, **bold**, *italic*, `code`, >quote, and hyperlinks in the format [link](http://example.com). Try !hacker and !professor and !timestamp too.
