I'd Rather Have A Bottle In Front Of Me (Than A Frontal Lobotomy) by Randy Hanzlick M.D. - Songfacts
A song with such an alluring title has to be on somebody's favourite list, and in the 1994 publication The Book of Lists: The '90s Edition, by David Wallechinsky and Amy Wallace, it figures at number 8 in Dr. Demento's 11 Worst Song Titles Of All Time. Without wishing to question Dr Demento's judgment, this is great title for a song, and it gets even better because it really is as good as it sounds. Randy Hanzlick M.D. was a real life doctor, and this composition is pure joy.

Bikeshedding - Law of triviality @ wikipedia
Parkinson's law of triviality is C. Northcote Parkinson's 1957 argument that members of an organization give disproportionate weight to trivial issues.[1] Parkinson provides the example of a fictional committee whose job was to approve the plans for a nuclear power plant spending the majority of its time on discussions about relatively minor but easy-to-grasp issues, such as what materials to use for the staff bike shed, while neglecting the proposed design of the plant itself, which is far more important and a far more difficult and complex task.

The law has been applied to software development and other activities.[2] The terms bicycle-shed effect, bike-shed effect, and bike-shedding were coined as a metaphor to illuminate the law of triviality; it was popularised in the Berkeley Software Distribution community by the Danish software developer Poul-Henning Kamp in 1999[3] and has spread from there to the whole software industry.

Nuns on Harleys? Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word announces 13th annual Nun Run
Think you have seen it all?

Bet you haven't seen too many nuns riding big Harleys, and if your mental picture includes images of women in flowing black-and-white habits, complete with traditional black veils and wimples, you need to know most women's religious orders now wear modern street dress.

But no matter their attire, the Houston-based Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word already are preparing for their 13th annual Nun Run, an annual 40-mile motorcycle ride and fundraiser from Houston to Galveston in mid-October. Many of the sisters also look forward to making the trip, sitting behind an experienced rider.

Making Exceptional Costumes for Exceptional Kids — HackSpace magazine
Reese Davis of Olathe, Kansas was born in 2005 with news that would change the course of his family’s lives: he was born with cancer on his spine. Reese spent his first year of life at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. After learning that the cancer had crushed his spine, Reese would need to rely on a wheelchair; he received his first wheelchair at three years old.

For Halloween that year, his dad, Lon Davis, asked Reese what he wanted to be for Halloween. When Reese replied that he wanted to be the beloved character from his favourite movie, WALL·E, Davis set out to make it happen. And thus, before Davis even realised, Walkin’ & Rollin’ Costumes had laid its ground floor.

The House That Spied on Me @ Gizmodo
Thanks to the Internet of Things, I could live in my very own tech-mediated Downton Abbey. That’s the appeal of smart homes for most people, and why they are supposed to be a $27 billion market by 2021. But that wasn’t my primary motivation. The reason I smartened up my house was to find out whether it would betray me.

I installed internet-connected devices to serve me, but by making the otherwise inanimate objects of my home “smart” and giving them internet-connected “brains,” I was also giving them the ability to gather information about my home and the people in it.

Once I made my home smart, what would it learn and whom would it tell?

BANANAS AGAINST RACISM @ Hackaday
This is a tale as old as time. Not love, it is about keeping something you made safe from those who would destroy something beautiful. In this case, the thing of beauty is a talking banana who reads Twitch and Youtube comments. The ne’er-do-wells are trolls seeking to ban-anana the account by forcing it to recite restricted words.

The problems stem from a visit from [Greekgodx], whose followers tend toward the dark side. When they set their sights on [Mike Nichols]’ yellow automaton, things slipped into a bleak place, and a twenty-four-hour ban falls on the fruit. A bunch of filtering is done, but it isn’t enough to stop the trolls, and the tally-man adds a second permanent strike against the account. An arms race of slurs and filtering ensued until the robot was able to reject all attempts at racism.

The banana has since been peeled from the feeds

QuickBASIC Lives On with QB64 | Hackaday
When I got my first computer, a second hand 386 running MS-DOS 6.22, I didn’t have an Internet connection. But I did have QuickBASIC installed and a stack of programming magazines the local library was throwing out, so I had plenty to keep myself busy. At the time, I thought QuickBASIC was more or less indistinguishable from magic.
Should You Be Using QuickBasic? No, you definitely should not. I didn’t write this to try and convince anyone to jump on a programming language that peaked before many of our readers were even born. QuickBASIC is an antiquated language, stuck with outdated methods and limitations that are confounding to the modern programmer. But QB64 does do an excellent job of modernizing this classic language, if only to a relatively small degree in the grand scheme of things, for those of us who cut our teeth on it.

Sometimes you have an idea that is so brilliant and so crazy that you just have to make it a reality. In 2011, [Look Mum No Computer] drew up plans in his notebook for a Furby organ, an organ comprised of a keyboard and a choir of Furbies. e couldn’t get a stable note out of the unmodified Furbies so he instead came up with what he’s calling the Furby Forman Fusion Synthesis. Each Furby is controlled by a pair of Ardunios. One Arduino sequences parts inside the Furby and the other produces a formant note, making the Furby sing vowels.

This Over-Engineered Dartboard Gives You a Bullseye Every Time
This Over-Engineered Dartboard Gives You a Bullseye Every Time ("A drunkard's dream"). With six infrared cameras, the dartboard tracks the specially-built darts while canceling out the noise of the outside environment. Then, using parabolic arcs and "good ol' y = mx +b,"—straight lines, that is—the brains of the board can calculate where the dart will hit, both vertically and horizontally.

For an engine, Rober used six separate motors powered by an Arduino to get things moving. Spools of fishing wire are pulling and tugging at the board itself from the engines, which make their moves based on trigonometry gained from data from the infrared cameras.

While Rober's setup might be a bit expensive for your basement bar (and time-consuming, considering it took him three years to build), the alternate use of the device—a dartboard guaranteed to move out of the way of any dart—is such a perfect prank that it might be worth it.

There's nothing funny about depression or anxiety, but some sufferers find humor to be a good way of dealing with the daily struggles of living with such mood disorders. British artist Gemma Correll is one of those people, and as you can see below, her illustrators are as funny as they are thought-provoking. Whether she's highlighting the perils of overthinking, sharing her dread at receiving a phone call, feeling bad for feeling bad, or stressing about not being stressed, the self-proclaimed "infamous anti-socialite and pug lady's" simple style and witty humor makes us laugh, but she also makes us think.
