Dubbed the Animotus by inventor [Ad Spiers], the device is a hand-held cube split into two layers. The upper layer can swivel left or right and extend or retract, giving the user both tactile and visual clues as to which direction to walk and how far to the goal.

WASP launches open tool for 3D printing orthopedics
Italian 3D printer manufacturer WASP has launched a free add-on for open source 3D modelling software Blender that allows users to model orthopedic devices with 3D scans. Designed for use by medical professionals, the add-on runs on Blender 2.8 and contains step-by-step commands to model a shape on a 3D scan, with the final design intended for 3D printing.

The tool was developed by WASP MED, WASP’s division focusing specifically on 3D printing in healthcare. After a year of research and intensive work, the WASP MED Blender Add-on was created in order to prepare professionals in using 3D technology and tools. WASP also collaborated with Alessandro Zomparelli, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, to develop the tool. In a press release, the company states that the intention of the add-on is to fill the gap between expensive and rigid professional software, and the powerful open-source software available that isn’t optimized for medical use.

These bearings are espacially designed for 3D-printing. These bearings don't use regular balls like other bearings but it uses specially designed for 3D-printing balls. This insures the most supple 3D-printable bearings with the least amount of play. The bearing prints in only one piece, fully assembled. You may have to wreck the balls a little lose after it has printed because the tolerances are very small. For the best result you can lubricate it with some grease. Hope you like it and can use it in your project. (results can depend on printer settings and type of 3D printer used).

Open & Affordable 3D Bioprinting -
Starting with an open source RepRap Ender 5 3D printer, we convert it to a bioprinter, and design some simple bioinks to print with.

We were inspired to take an inexpensive RepRap 3D printer (an open source 3D printer capable of printing a kit of itself) and convert it for bioprinting applications. Current commercial bioprinters are in the region of tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, and we wanted to see if we could make a great one for a fraction of the cost.

Hobbyist electronics and robotics are getting cheaper and easier to build as time moves on, and one advantage of that is the possibility of affordable prosthetics. A great example is this transhumeral prosthesis from [Duy], his entry for this year’s Hackaday Prize.

Side views of the 3D printed prosthesis arm.With ten degrees of freedom, including individual fingers, two axes for the thumb and enough wrist movement for the hand to wave with, this is already a pretty impressive robotics build in and of itself. The features don’t stop there however. The entire prosthesis is modular and can be used in different configurations, and it’s all 3D printed for ease of customization and manufacturing. Along with the myoelectric sensor which is how these prostheses are usually controlled, [Duy] also designed the hand to be controlled with computer vision and brain-controlled interfaces.

New 3D Printing Technique – Friction Welding | Hackaday
“Friction welding” is the process of rubbing two surfaces together until the friction alone has created enough heat to join them. Industrially, the method is applied to joining large, metal workpieces that would otherwise require a time-consuming weld. That is all there is to it. Snip off a bit of filament, feed it into your rotary tool, and run a bead to join parts and shapes or do repairs. Friction welded plastic is shockingly strong, vastly superior to glued plastic for some joints. Another tool for the toolbox.

A team of researchers at Texas A&M University has developed an innovative way to print therapeutics in 3D for regenerative medicine. In a recent study conducted at Texas A&M, researchers in Dr. Akhilesh K Gaharwar's lab in the Department of Biomedical Engineering formulated a bioink consisting of 2D mineral nanoparticles to sequester and 3D print therapeutics at precise locations. Their findings were published in Advanced Healthcare Materials.

The team has designed a new class of hydrogel bioinks -- 3D structures that can absorb and retain considerable amounts of water -- loaded with therapeutic proteins.

How To: Easily Smooth and Finish 3D Prints with XTC-3D | MatterHackers
An inherent part of FFF 3D printing is layer lines and striations. For prototyping and iterating, it isn’t a problem since the 3D print isn’t intended for anything more than checking fit and feel; does the part fit in place, does it feel right, is this corner too sharp or too round. But if you’re making gifts for friends and family, selling prints, or creating unique props and costumes, then those layer lines are something you’re going to want to remove or hide to elevate your 3D printed project from basic to incredible. For some filaments, like ABS or PolySmooth, you can use chemicals to treat the surface of a print to dissolve it and smooth it out. For others, you’re limited to sandpaper and fillers to cover it all up, and that defeats the purpose of printing in the variety of colors that filaments are offered in. XTC-3D is a great alternative to sandpaper to preserve the color and give your print a super shiny finish. You can even sand XTC-3D if you’d rather use that than filler primers and body fillers. Let’s dive into how to actually use XTC-3D, then compare it to other smoothing processes.

The video depicts Vulcan II — a 33-by-11-foot 3D printer developed in collaboration with New Story’s technology partner, ICON — piping what appears to be concrete into place to create the frame of a small house — a process that the nonprofit claims the machine can complete in less than a day. The video then speeds up to show the printer creating a row of the dwellings before providing a tour of a home’s interior, which appears airy and bright.

The video may be just a rendering, but the project it depicts is very real — New Story plans to build a 3D-printed neighborhood of more than 50 houses in Latin America this summer. Each home will cost just $7,000, and only families earning less than $200 per month will be eligible to buy them.

When designing components that will be made of plastic, it’s often necessary to add ribs and gussets to improve the stiffness and strength of load bearing features. This reduces material volume and print time for 3D printed parts, compared to the time it would take to make these features out of solid structures. In this post I'm going to first quantify the structural benefits of adding gussets and ribs to your part designs using FEA studies, and then walk you through the best practices for proper application of these features to plastic prototypes.
