ERCA extends flood watch, calls for updated data mapping across local region | Windsor Star
With flooding remaining widespread across the local area, the Essex Region Conservation Authority has called on the need to update flood mapping throughout Windsor and Essex County.

New modelling and land surveys, potentially at a cost of between $8 million to $15 million, needs to be done to better understand challenges that lie ahead in future years for every local municipality impacted by flooding, said Tim Byrne, ERCA’s director of watershed management services.

Flood mapping would allow areas of concern to properly prepare — including setting municipal budget funds aside — so flooding as it occurs can be properly addressed, he said. It would provide blueprint support for municipal planning, road building, infrastructure construction and residential development.

The last time flood mapping was completed in this region was in the late 1970s, Byrne said.

“Over the course of the last three to four years, you have many areas across the region that have flooding, drainage or standing water problems — often related to not having a full understanding of hazard lands and existing map flood plains,” Byrne said.

“You need (updated) modelling programs, field survey work that covers our region. You have a wealth of new digital tools that was not available before.”

Nine Lies About Work - Marcus Buckingham
"We tend to think that subjectivity in data is a bug, and that the feature we’re after is objectivity. Actually, however, when it comes to measurement, the pursuit of objectivity is the bug, and reliable subjectivity the feature. These questions generate reliable (and subjective) data, and while this isn’t everything, it’s a lot. "

"A Carpentries Approach to ACRL Framework Instruction" by Ari Gofman
This paper compares the pedagogical theory driving current norms towards instruction of novices in both fields, specifically focusing on The Carpentries and ACRL Framework instruction. I identify key areas of difference in theoretical and practical approaches towards education of learners entirely new to a topic, focusing on a choice to pursue constructivist or experiential learning versus providing direct instructional guidance.

Methods: Two case studies are explored through the lens of the Dreyfus Model of learning for their theoretical underpinings for engaging novice learners: the ACRL Framework and Carpentries’ Instructor Training.

Results: Applying the Dreyfus Model of learning and cognitive load theory shows theoretical benefits to direct instructional guidance over constructivist or minimally guided instruction.

Conclusions: The ACRL Framework and Carpentries workshops share teaching goals of creating new mental models and core skills to support future learning, but differ in their pedagogical approaches. For novice learners of information literacy, there may be value in considering a more guided approach. Concrete lesson-planning strategies are proposed.

GitHub - ourresearch/future-oa: The jupyter notebook behind the paper "The Future of OA: A large-scale analysis projecting Open Access publication and readership" at https://doi.org/10.1101/795310
This is the jupyter notebook (manuscript.ipynb) behind the publication:

Piwowar, Priem, Orr (2019) The Future of OA: A large-scale analysis projecting Open Access publication and readership. bioRxiv: https://doi.org/10.1101/795310

The raw data needed to run the analysis is all available in Zenodo, here:

Piwowar, Priem, Orr (2019). Data From: The Future of OA: A large-scale analysis projecting Open Access publication and readership [Data set]. Zenodo. http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3474007

The notebook should run once you put those datasets in the a /data subdir and install all needed libraries.
Apologies for the slightly, um, messy code -- this is our first jupyter notebook and it evolved over time. We'll improve. In the mean time huge thanks to the Jupyter, Pandas, Matplotlib, etc teams for such a great toolset.

For others new to jupyter, and to help me remember: do this to export the notebook to html: jupyter nbconvert manuscript.ipynb --to html --TemplateExporter.exclude_input=True then push to github, then can be viewed at https://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://github.com/Impactstory/future-oa/blob/master/manuscript.html

The actual submitted version had a few final tweeks in Google Docs here and then were exported to the gdoc_git export directory, and finally saved as a pdf. Images are all in https://github.com/Impactstory/future-oa/tree/master/gdoc_export/images if you are looking for them (numbers not related to Figure numbers in text alas).

Format Shift: Information Behavior and User Experience in the Academic E-book Environment | Tracy | Reference & User Services Quarterly
For librarians, DRM-heavy platforms provide reason for caution, and librarians should be skeptical of any functionality that requires special accounts due to users’ lack of willingness to create them. Download page limits that force users to break up chapters should be avoided. Monographs in particular may be worth avoiding in e-book format when they are not DRM-free and available for download into users’ preferred reading environments. Textbooks may be the best case for libraries buying both print book and e-book copies of a title. Some users simply are not comfortable with textbook reading in e-book format, but it can save money for those who are, and there is significant use of textbooks for quick-reference outside of assigned class readings that may be equally important in driving high use of those titles. However, many users will simply buy their own copy of a textbook because they see it as a long-term investment that they will use beyond the semester.

ursula-k-le-guin-a-non-euclidean-view-of-california-as-a-cold-place-to-be - 1989a_Le-Guin_non-Euclidean-view-California.pdf
What do you do with her in Walden Two?

Utopia has been euclidean, it has been European, and it has been masculine. I am trying to suggest, in an evasive, distrustful, untrustworthy fashion, and as obscurely as I can, that our final loss of faith in that radiant sandcastle may enable our eyes to adjust to a dimmer light and in it perceive another kind of utopia. As this utopia would not be euclidean, European, or masculinist, my terms and images in speaking of it must be tentative and seem peculiar. Victor Turner’s antitheses of structure and communitas are useful to my attempt to think about it: structure in society, in his terms, is cognitive, communitas existential; structure provides a model, communitas a potential; structure classifies, communitas reclassifies; structure is expressed in legal and political institutions, communitas in art and religion.

Guest column — Lessons learned from shoreline collapse at Revere Copper and Brass | Windsor Star
EPA and EGLE have done an exemplary job mapping contaminated sediment deposits and designating priority areas for clean-up in the Detroit River. However, the shoreline breach at the former Revere Copper and Brass Site highlights how vulnerable contaminated deposits are to shoreline activities and to human induced or other disturbances to the river bottom.

This incident should be a call to action to accelerate sediment clean-up at all designated areas in the Detroit River. In addition, with future spill responses and shoreline accidents, officials should consider the implications of contaminated sediment dispersal in the spill notification plan and subsequent salvage operations.

Decolonizing your syllabus? You might have missed some steps – CLEAR
For Tuck and Yang and for so many other Indigenous people, decolonization means only one thing: the repatriation of Indigenous Land and life. How do you do that in a classroom?

You can start by learning and teaching about the colonial roots and ongoing structures of colonialism in your discipline. Do you teach botany or biogeography? See Schiebinger & Swan’s Colonial Botany. Statistics? Try Walter & Andersen’s Indigenous Statistics. Environmental studies? Grove’s Green Imperialism. Environmental history? Griffin and Robin’s Ecology and Empire. Math? Verran’s Science and an African Logic (by the way, you can’t just sample from Verran’s book– she flips chapters between how she used to think and how her teaching and learning became more anti-colonial and you don’t want to replicate her pre-learning!). There are countless more. But please, please don’t message me for more–in truth & reconciliation, learning the truths of colonization is literally your job. Doing the work is crucial. Doing it with students is even better
