Africa Decolonized: Native Place Names, No Borders – The Decolonial Atlas
Endonyms of Africa. Map by Jordan Engel

The map of Africa that most of us know today was drawn during the era of European colonialism – from the borders which divided the continent, to the erasure of indigenous place names.

This map seeks to remedy colonial cartography by erasing the borders, orienting to the South (in the tradition of 11th century Amaziɣ cartographer Muhammad al-Idrisi), and labeling locations in their predominant native language.

The Africa Decolonized map by Jordan Engel can be reused under the Decolonial Media License 0.1.

Alchemy and the Use of Myth as a Tool for Authentic Engagement

October 12, 2018, 7:30-9:30 p.m
Registration begins at 7:00 p.m.
Presenter: G. Kwame Scruggs, Ph.D., MA
Location: St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, Inwood at Mockingbird, Dallas

Myths have been around for thousands of years and are road maps designed to assist us on our journeys; all we must do is take the time to decipher the codes. Myths were often told to assist individuals through their initiations. This presentation will provide the inspiration behind the creation of Alchemy, Inc., a non-profit organization based in in Akron, Ohio, which assists in the development of urban male youth through the telling, discussion and analysis of mythological stories. In 2012 Alchemy was one of 12 programs to receive the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities—the nation’s highest honor for after-school and out-of-school programs. Alchemy was also the backdrop for the award-winning, feature-length documentary, “Finding the Gold Within.”
Participants will explore how using myth as a means of communication allows us to become heroes in our own stories.

Saturday Workshop
Sankofa: Going Back so that We May Go Forward

City as Soul May 13, 2016 Ronald Schenk, Ph.D., LCSW, IAAP, The notion of anima mundi, which Jung borrowed from alchemy, posits a life force belonging to the world itself. Expanding this notion, we would say every place, thing, event, and relational grouping has its own life apart from human involvement. Cities themselves, then, would be seen as each ensouled in a particular way. This lecture explores the life of the “city in itself,” examining how cities carry life and death, sickness and health, memory and future vision for the collective psyche.

The Psychology Program is shaped by the concept of psychology as a liberal art as well as a rigorous science. To this end, it is engaged in the enterprise of questioning and rethinking the discipline of psychology. Such a broad and deep understanding of psychology places into perspective the value and limits of views that claim that psychology is the study of mind, or the science of behavior, or the interaction of mind and body, or the personal growth and enrichment of the person.

Active research and writing is expected of students; original reflection is as important as detailed scholarship. Research seminars during the junior and senior years provide the occasions for students and faculty to work together in close association.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology
An I/O Psychology undergraduate concentration is available.

Through Plan and Master's Program in Psychology
Psychology majors may earn a master's degree in psychology after approximately a full year of course work beyond the bachelor's degree.
