APS -71st Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics - Event - How do wombats make cubed poo?

So, research how wombats make cubic poop may provide a line towards a third method of manufacturing soft cubic solids. Why is it cubic is speculated as due to ease of building piles, since wombats have poor eyesight.

Programmable CNT based separation filters, possible basis for molecular manufacturing. At least it seems to deal with gas/liquids easily enough in theory for basic molecular synthesis of simple compounds. So could go from stripping CO2 and water from the atmosphere to make simple synthetic fuels like ethanol

Basically, this thing only blocks like 10% of the absorption surface of the small intestine but has a huge effect, and in particular seems very effective at treating type 2 diabetes. Basically, since it is a physical barrier liner, you can eat like you always do but less calories are reaching your body so it's like you were dieting. Why blocking absorption at the front end of the small intestine matters so much is still being researched, but the going theory is that sugar and fat are being absorbed near the front end while other stuff is absorbed farther along. Designed for permanent use, but installed via the throat (with no anesthetic?!?)

Composites for Seawater Desalination - Press Release 4 October 2012
october 2012 by asteroza
Near composite piping suitable for low temperature heat exchanger evaporators for desalination. Applicable to OTEC for shell and tube type heat exchangers, rather than Heatric type printed heat exchangers, as the tubes could be built this way coupled with an outer carbon fiber pressure shell to make a highly corrosion resistant heat exchanger for seawater exposure

Using an extruded filament method, they build up titanium parts, like making a clay pot from rolled tubes of clay (when you don't have a turning table to make a regular pot). Similar to traditional extruder 3D printers, but it isn't a full melt/fusion type. It might be more akin to the concrete contour crafting tricks. Thermally it might be easier than traditional 3D metal printers, which use a metal powder buildup with sintering, when they are otherwise not directly melting/fusing via laser. Are these parts as good as traditional heavy press closed die forgings though?

Uh, I think they are proposing a setup where the mirrors are fixed on carts traveling on tubular concentric rails around the core collector tower, the idea being it is easier to tow the whole array (which has a fixed mirror orientation relative to the tower) to track the sun. They also propose using the tubular rails as a large distributed radiator. I don't understand why they want to integrate PV (and how would one do the power takeoff from the moving carts?), and why they aren't using a whole ring to make the cart towing easier?

Basically these guys propose a long vertical tube in the sea, with a membrane over the low end. At the right depth, you get the necessary pressure. The problem is the pressure though, since the freshwater will fill the tube, increasing pressure on the output side of the membrane. You are then forced to pump from the bottom, which means you are similar (but less?) in energy expenditure to conventional pressure reverse osmosis.

Aftermarket shotgun magazine extender that is alternative to long magazine tube extenders, by bringing the center of gravity back some. Marketed more to the "oh shit!" home defense crowd, that doesn't want to wait to reload. Since it is a direct tube extender alternative, it is more compatible with existing shotguns. If you are buying new though, might as well step up to a Saiga with a box or drum mag though...
