Some kind of treatment process to effectively convert cheap/fast/plentiful softwoods into the appearance (and it seems properties) of hardwoods, which normally are long life trees that can't be grown fast. So, it avoids the need to cut down old growth forests, in favor of factory tree farms making trees quickly.
