So they got bacteria to build silk proteins with are almost twice as long as real spider silk proteins, thus the doubled protein is now a near match in performance to true spider silk fiber (true spider silk fiber benefits from good protein design and spinner design though). They seem to think it should be possible to use the fusing method to build even longer proteins to up the strength.

Interesting, that announcement and production ramp up is roughly the same as Spiber in japan. Are they both licensing the core spider silk genetically modified bacteria production tech from Spiber in Sweden?

Here's the swedish Spiber company. Seems like a biotech research outfit, so best guess is they are licensing core biotechnology to the japanese Spiber company, which is is by itself developing the actual textile manufacturing tech via it's linkup with a japanese auto parts maker (why not a manufacturing or textile equipment maker?)

Japanese company commercializing mass production artificial spider silk via genetically modified microorganisms (bacteria?). The fibroin biopolymer based fiber will be called QMONOS and is scheduled for 2015 mass production at the pilot plant (100Kg/month). Except there is a swedish company with the same name, and had research in approximately the same time frame, and looking for partners. Yet this japanese company's site seems to artfully mention that this is a japanese technology push. Something smells fishy here...
