Different languages, similar encoding efficiency: Comparable information rates across the human communicative niche | Science Advances
In terms of encoded data, humans generally operate at 39.15 bits/sec regardless of language. Which means that languages that have low information per syllable must speak faster to compensate. Japanese seems to encode at 5 bits/syllable so must talk fast. On the other end, it looks like US english is capped at 9 syllables/sec so audio processing into information (mental objects) is a possible limiter on the high end.

Basically Lynx over SMS, which isn't a bad thing, say for emergencies where overall bandwidth is limited. But, SMS has no end-to-end assurances for delivery so dealing with lossy transports is an issue, aggravated by said emergency situation that necessitated using it. How about a a touch enabled version of Lynx as a conventional android browser instead?

PVDF microbelts for harvesting energy from respiration - Energy & Environmental Science (RSC Publishing)
Interesting. I suppose one concept is direct implantation to power body internal devices, but then you would have a weird wheezing buzz in your chest when you breath. Why Some Languages Sound So Much Faster than Others - TIME
Japanese has a high syllable speech rate (7.84 syllables per second average) but a low syllable information density (0.49). For comparison, English is 6.19/0.91, Mandarin 5.18/0.94, Spanish at 7.82/0.63. However, averaging total data output, most languages average out the same total information output for a given time unit, indicating a neural limit on language.

Magnetal - Advanced Technology for Magnetic Bearings
Interesting, but a little sketchy. It seems to be a properly integrated Halbach array magnet being using for magnetic levitation in a bearing, with some self correcting fores that are useful, but aren't Halbach arrays by definition a drag device that has to be overcome by other forces? Can the drag really be superior to classical magnetic bearings? Or perhaps not, but simplicity of manufacturing means it may be the cheaper choice in the realm of magnetic bearings. But maximum bearing force capacity (lift capability of a Halbach array) is kinda limited usually, right?

The Technology That Can Communicate Electronically Through Solid Steel - BAE Systems
BAe rigs up an acoustic information transfer system to cut the number of through-hull connectors on submarines, reducing the number of penetrations. Though I'm a little surprised they are using an acoustic system, as you would normally want to cut down on noise output, especially at anything with a sea interface. I guess the transmission power is sufficiently small enough not to go far. Couple this with a simple post shaped plug sticking out of the hull as part of an inductive power transfer system, and you could almost eliminate all through-hulls short of cooling water and waste related pipes.

[ネットワーク性能]70Mビット/秒に迫るWAN速度 - 検証!ニフティクラウド:ITpro
Nifty Public Cloud is roughly 50-70 Mbps on the public network interface, and naturally latency is good due to being a domestic datacenter. Amazon EC2 in comparison only gets around 20 Mbps from the Singapore zone and the latency that entails. Interesting to note that there seems to be few resource controls in place, so the potential for abuse is there. The interesting side note is that Nifty Cloud is a VMware ESX(ESXi?) deployment it seems, because they are using the VMXNET 10Gbps network driver, which allows some virtual machines potentially 5Gbps of throughput on the internal interface. The raw network performance alone seems to trounce Amazon, and Amazon would be hard pressed to match it even with a domestic Japan zone. There is no mention of what time of day these tests were conducted which is suspicious, because of night batch jobs and data dump effects, as well as well known net gridlock times such as lunch and just after the end of the official working day.
