Interesting use of a linear piston motion of a wave power buoy to drive a mechanically driven high pressure seawater pump for a reverse osmosis water desalination rig. RO requires high pressure, which typically requires a lot of electric power for a electric pump, but by using gradual pressure building using a wave driven seawater pump, you can achieve equivalent pressures. Potentially convenient for small island resorts that have very little electrical power. But the long water pipe is a bit of a problem. If it were me, I would use the wave buoy to send pressurized seawaater directly via pipe to a beach building with the RO rig and a pressure accumulator tank, since that keeps the more finicky parts out of the water.

Interesting LED lamp that uses saltwater and sacrificial electrodes to generate power. A sacrificial magnesium rod works with salt water (such as ocean water) to create current to power the LED light. Fill the lamp once with seawater to get 8 hours of light apparently (need to swap salt water at that point due to chemistry). The sacrificial rod is good for 120 hours of use, though you probably should flush the thing with freshwater and dry it out for storage.

Nice part of this is that it basically is a submerged buoy actuated seawater pump, sending high pressure seawater ashore to a turbine station on land, keeping the electrical bits dry. Water pressure can be used directly for desalination as well.

Basically these guys propose a long vertical tube in the sea, with a membrane over the low end. At the right depth, you get the necessary pressure. The problem is the pressure though, since the freshwater will fill the tube, increasing pressure on the output side of the membrane. You are then forced to pump from the bottom, which means you are similar (but less?) in energy expenditure to conventional pressure reverse osmosis.

Now here's a potentially smart idea, a hybrid wind turbine tower/seawater water tower with the object of reusing the wind turbine tower's volume and height as a pumped hydro storage reservoir (much like a municipal water tank tower). The kicker is instead of electric pumps/turbines filling the tank, use wave buoy pumps to use wave power for primary tank filling. Though, to be honest, if one were committing to doing a pumped hydro intermediary energy storage system for load leveling, there may be merit in having an auxilliary electric pump driven by the wind turbine, or skipping that step and figuring out a way to direct drive a pump mechanically from the wind turbine (hydraulic remote transmission assembly, or possibly a driveshaft, or a driveshaft going to a combiner transmission connected to the water turbine generator), so you have only one electric generator, near sea level. Note this scheme only works for monopiles and gravity bases, not offshore floaters.

If you accept that direct room temperature electrolysis has a poor efficiency, and that doing hydrogen production using mineral accreation electrodes in seawater has a similar efficiency, one can make the arguement that you might as well make the Biorock if you are going to do direct electrolysis anyways. You also create the semiporous seacrete/artifical rock that can be used as stable foundations for coral growth and ocean ecosystem recovery, or as a direct building material like concrete (though not high strength).

Using assorted tricks for efficiency, such as a side evaporator using waste heat or low temp solar thermal to provide hypersaline brine for the main process, and various ion barriers to deprive the hypersaline brine of specific ions for specific flows, then reversing the ion barrier types (which causes the deprived brine to reacquire the ions from the main input seawater, which desalinates it), these guys claim lower power consumption (well, electric at least)
