SaltX Technology - Energy storage with nano coated salt
2 tank, 2 reactor setup. Use electricity (but actually just input heat) to charge in one reactor. Extracting energy in the other reactor creates heat (and cold?). It seems to be basically boiling saltwater, but their nano-coated salt prevents caking that would clog the charging reactor.

Uh, so this appears to be a single fluid fuel salt MSR (subcritical?) paired with a fusion reactor using the MSR fuel salt as a fertile blanket salt. So in some ways similar to an ADSR.

Don't like the pebble fuel, but this is probably a more achievable NACC configuration, as it isolates secondary loop better in case of primary loop leaks, compared to other proposed NACC systems, which use helium gas reactor, with a helium turbine within containment driving an external air compressor also in containment sucking in and then expelling external air through containment which isn't good (which I suppose that might be solvable with a shaft through the containment wall with frangible clutches).

Interesting LED lamp that uses saltwater and sacrificial electrodes to generate power. A sacrificial magnesium rod works with salt water (such as ocean water) to create current to power the LED light. Fill the lamp once with seawater to get 8 hours of light apparently (need to swap salt water at that point due to chemistry). The sacrificial rod is good for 120 hours of use, though you probably should flush the thing with freshwater and dry it out for storage.

Current solar salts are near 585C max. New eutectic salt can reach 700C with similar materials compatibility. They also have a new glass derivative with a depressed melt point of 400C (normal window glass is 600C) that can run up to 1200C. The glass based thermal storage seems to be intended for hot air aeroderivative turbines/combined cycle setups rather than just steam turbines. Claim low cost components of the eutectic salt, discovered using advanced automated chemical mixture analysis.

Nuclear combustion combined cycle (NCCC) setup is interesting. Use a high temperature reactor with molten salt coolant loop to provide more heat than methane autoignition temperature (630C), slip a molten salt heat exchanger after the compressor but before the combustor of an open air cycle gas turbine combined cycle rig. Run on exclusively reactor heat normally, but pump in methane for peaking. May need a HRSG bypass when not peaking unless you treat the HRSG heat exchanger as a feedwater heater to the primary steam plant of the reactor. Step this up a bit with integrated ASU for oxyfuel ops, a post HRSG exhaust gas heat exchanger to preheat post compressor oxygen before hitting the molten salt exchanger, and flush stored ASU LN2 through an air turbine and pipe the cold exhaust through the steam condenser stack. Similar to the old ANP indirect cycle airplane engine, which is itself an open cycle brayton turbine running on reactor heat.

The interesting bit is a sodium based molten salt that melts at 57C, which is very low and potentially in the range of a hot water heater. As an example, a home natural gas fuelcell feeding a high temperature hot water heater that envelops a home molten salt battery.

Apparently this is a parabolic trough type solar thermal plant with molten salt in the collector tubes, which is a first apparently. I wonder how they keep the salt from freezing in the tubes at night? Do they drain it, or accept the losses associated with keeping it molten directly in the tube at night? They mention a combined cycle plant, so maybe they vampire heat from the plant to keep the salt hot?

Neat trick of using a two layer optimized blanket to reduce the amount of accelerator input power required for a accelerator driven subcritical reactor, though how practical it would be is up for debate. Admittedly, this is more oriented for transmutation/actinides burning. For power, you might end up with an inner blanket, lead-bismuth coolant, and a separation/heat exchanger vessel for the main liquid fuel (like a LFTR), and finally an outer heat exchanger from lead to steam (though I would rather use supercritical CO2). There may be an advantage to going to a liquid blanket as well.

Woah! The energy costs for the proton accelerator have dropped a lot, so a subcritical reactor can be made critical by the neutrons from the accelerator at acceptable efficiencies. It's the conceptual equivalent of slapping a turbocharger on a net negative engine to turn it positive. If it requires a superconducting accelerator, you could make the argument for a superconducting generator on the turbine generator, which would lead to an argument for an on-site ASU to supply LN2...
