uber/kraken: P2P docker registry capable of distributing TBs of data in seconds
Bittorrent based P2P distribution of containers. Tracker seems like a weak point, but since it's for setting up the mesh and not running it, if it goes down the p2p part is still running...

kademelia DHT based system for linking up P2P peers. IP/metadata is kinda public though. Used by DAT protocol to find peers. Apparently bittorrent mainline DHT sucked too much for DAT use.

Distributed Localization: A Linear Theory - IEEE Journals & Magazine
Using linear approximations seems to work decently to calculate location using a distributed architecture. AKA using cellphones to geolocate each other rather than triangulate strictly from basestations, and using it like a graph node network so your tracking ability can reach like a tentacle into buildings and closed spaces, assuming nobody is feeding fake info...

Introduction · ssb-handbook
A different take on the decentralized social network model, where rather than a federation of servers, it's direct federation at the user/client level. There are servers, useful for grouping users though.

Using tor would essentially hide the endpoint from clearnet public access, while potentially being able to penetrate firewalls. IoT safe remote access, or botnet C&C usage comes to mind. Interesting proof-of-concept though.

Sucker friends to open a URL that loads PeerJS so a webRTC channel opens to haul distributed machine learning code to run in that friend's browser's sandbox. Which means if you have a website where lots of people go to, you could have a small army of bots to do anything from deep learning ML to bitcoin mining. Or a DDoS for that matter...

Tribler - Privacy using our Tor-inspired onion routing
Tries to be secure by using tor, plus a little tit-for-tat network load sharing (use uplink for the network onion routing for other peers). Though that means you might be classed as an exit node of sorts, plus naturally it's slower than clearnet due to the onion routing.

LTE Direct Research Project
So a bad mix between ham radio and iBeacons, but you can't randomize your MAC address (IMEI) so you are always identifiable. Won't work for protest situations as a carrier can functionally prohibit by disabling authorization for spectrum. Might be nice for disasters to form mesh networks assuming the authorization infrastructure survives.

Hyperboria.net - the decentralized network powered by CJDNS
Interesting, a p2p overlay network like freenet, but you explicitly connect to other nodes, and can kick/ban other nodes (potentially by the traffic they pass to you). But all that does is create pressure to make a "white" net to keep your reputation clean, and a separate "black" that holds everything else. But since all the interesting/subversive stuff will be in the blacknet, mere use will associate you with terrorists/pirates/pedophiles. Just like freenet, since one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. Isn't a tor hidden service enough?

Trying to overcome the centralization of thingiverse by going for the Pirate Distribution Network (PDN), a live p2p build file sharing platform, slightly in the same vein as The Pirate Bay for torrenting stuff. Also, if such a network worked well, then once a build file is let loose, it will become harder to censor/suppress it.

Sharefest
Interesting semi-ephemeral p2p file sharing service. Similar to torrenting, in that you "seed" by keeping the browser tab open, and share files via a link. If everyone drops out, the sharing dies. If you stop,, but someone else keeps going, it stays alive. Uses javascript and webRTC's data channel for data hauling.
