Hydraulic Hydro Storage: The Optimal Energy Storage System
Interesting take on pumped hydro, using a giant solid stone piston for the compression mass, cut using an upper and lower ring tunnel connected by a wire saw. So basically an excavate in place scheme for a high mass, rather than say Gravity Power, which uses a vertical TBM and an artificial (concrete?) piston. Still uses water as the working fluid, no indication if this is closed loop. Some of the drawings even show the piston cut from the ground surface, which means as you store energy, this giant cylinder rock mass rises from the ground like a mountain...

Interesting bit on a possible nuclear subterrene, a tunnel boring machine using an high heat annular cutting face, which melts the rock and seals the tunnel, while passing over a smoothed out rock core that can be cut into large blocks for debris removal and transport.

ABB demonstrates technology to power flash charging electric bus in 15 seconds
Fast charge systems have been proposed in the past for pseudo-trolleybuses and trolleybuses with limited off-route capability via battery. With current PHEV and EV bus types, this might have legs, as it avoids trolleybus electric line infrastructure, and in many places, people expect enclosed bus stops so the charger infrastructure can be built into the stop more easily.. Though from an installation and operations standpoint, a wireless charge pad embedded in the road in front of stop seems potentially more usable. The real problem is the fast charge itself, as most batteries can't accept power that fast, so you are forced to move into supercapacitor type systems, or perhaps electric flywheels.

Primus Power: Smart Grid Storage
Basically, avoid custom tanks for flow battery sites and base it on modular rack boxes (about a residential hot water heater in size), and focus on mass production economies of scale to improve the costs. Otherwise, you tend to keep running into first of a kind types of costs. You loose some efficiencies, but the argument can be made that you can increase total flow by dispersing valves and pumps. Making the whole thing modular has benefits for site expansion and minimum hardware for initial operations.

Interesting use of water to both keep the compression isothermal, and to store heat for later when expanding to keep the expansion cycle isothermal. But they are advocating using compressed air tankage (gas cyclinder) rather than salt domes, so there is a high capital cost of tanks issue that needs to be addressed. Hrm, this ends up being similar to the Energy Bag guys, since they would use seawater to both release and recover heat via heat exchanger/recuperator. But if you are getting worked up over heat recovery, why not go for hotter compression cycles and store the heat as a molten salt?

That hole in the indian ocean sure is mighty suspicious. But the definition of the meaning of the "below geoid" level isn't clear to me. Does that mean the hole in the indian ocean is not a gravity dense area?

Generic long nanotube fibers which can scale to hundreds of meters now possible. Only problem is the process to spin fiber for conductive applications, such as transmission lines, requires very high purity source metallic carbon nanotubes. That's the other big problem of production, as there is still work to do to do mass separation of bulk nanotubes into metallic and semiconductor types at high purity .
