The idea is flipping cloud distributed ops upside down, moving compute to the bleeding edge, in end user PC's and smartphones, and then pay for the compute/storage through cryptocurrency. This might be a future model of edgeless cloud computing, if it doesn't implode. So, basically paid SETI@home.

Sandia’s “Cooler” technology offers fundamental breakthrough in heat transfer for microelectronics, other cooling applications – Sandia Labs News Releases
Interesting, but the problem with this is the air gap between the heat source and the rotating heatsink, and potentially the large lack of coverage at the center due to the intake. This probably puts a practical upper limit on heat density, as heat has to cross the bottom gap, which is operating as a air/gas bearing for the impeller fin assembly. The center intake area issue is probably mitigated by the thermal plate effect of the bottom of the impeller facing the heat source.

Hold the salt: UCLA engineers develop revolutionary new desalination membrane / UCLA Newsroom
Interesting use of plasma treatment to make a microscopic polymer brush/fiber layer to sweep the desalination membrane surface as a physical approach to membrane maintenance (as opposed to typical chemical cleaning or flushing by reverse flow). Since this is an atmospheric pressure plasma treatment, I wonder if this could be applied as a form of antifouling treatment for fixed marine/ocean structures, such as barges, piers, oil rigs, and other structures where drag isn't much of an issue...
