This appears to be hot gravel thermal energy storage medium, but it isn't clear is the working fluid is air or not (thus how the rock fill is "charged"), only that it's driving a steam boiler/turbine.

Looks like a semi-hot cycle helicopter, but instead of a potentially more complicated tip jet drive, it appears to use dual contra rotating direct drive turbines to spin the rotors, exhausting into the inter-disk area of the rotor hub. That exhaust choice is a bit odd though, but it might increase local air velocity over the blades.

Um, so they cheated here a bit, and basically entertained the possibility of integrating the fuel cell and storage tank with conventional (i.e. existing) gas fired on-demand hot water heaters which are common in japan, rather than forcing the homeowner to rip out their existing hot water heater. Well, closer to reality is they still have to rip it out, but at least with this setup, you can stick the backup heater into the nook a building was originally equipped with, and stick the fuel cell close to where AC compressors are typically located for a japanese residence.

The image is not helping in visualizing a power turbine occurring IN FRONT OF a combustor, especially how one transfers compressed air from the compressor to the combustor through the turbine wheel. Seems they are doing a trick where they use a centrifugal compressor, and rather than having a fixed stator correcting the swirl, they allow power recovery of the swirl directly to power the bypass fan ring (pre-combustion power turbine), then move the air towards the combustor (secondary compressor here too?), then on to the post combustion power turbine which is shaft linked to the first stage compressor. So they are probably trying to get too much pressure from the stage compressor, and trying to avoid a HP/LP post combustion power turbine setup. Attractive for some uses.

Still only 70%, and no mention of an off-grid mode, so it probable still doesn't work under grid blackout conditions (natural gas circulator pump and maybe the stack heater are grid powered only rather than self powered via a small accumulator battery).

PV Battery, Water Heater Combined for Efficiency -- Tech-On!
Definitely a "duh, why didn't I think of that" idea, though I imagine there may be long term issues regarding clarity of the clear plastic due to mineral accretion from the water and external clarity due to UV degradation and air pollution. But it is a neat trick to use water's optical properties to improve collector efficiency. Japan has a long history of home solar water heaters, but then tend to look terrible after a number of years and can be a real eyesore because they usually integrate the tank as well (but in Japan, home resale value is so low because people care about the land value more and build homes with poor longevity anyways so people care less about external appearances).

Interesting that they use high temperature coolant, in an effort to cool to ambient temperature rather than forcefully chill the coolant below ambient, as a kind of economizer.
