Nuclear Propulsion Along Inland Waterways
This is actually an argument in favor of mobile thermal batteries with their heat engines, and a recharging infrastructure (which preferably uses small nuclear heat sources). Fireless steam locomotives are still in use in select industries that use a large steam vessel recharged by an external steam source, but newer thermal batteries could improve on things.

Interesting work on both thermoacoustic heat sources and matched bidirectional turbines for electrical power generation. Thermoacoustic electrical generators previously used linear alternators, but those prefer faster cycles, which is opposite what the thermoacoustic wants (parts sizing goes up unfavorably when scaling), and slower long stroke linear alternators also have issues (long piston stroke, sealing issues). Using a rectifying bidirectional turbine may be a convenient workaround.

New hybrid ceramic for use in heat exchangers. Start with a titanium carbide porous block, immerse in a copper and zirconium bath. The zirconium infiltrates the ceramic and displaces titanium in the carbide, while the titanium migrates into the open pores. Copper ends up being a thin film sealant.
