Nitrogen fixation in a landrace of maize is supported by a mucilage-associated diazotrophic microbiota
Corn/maize variant that doesn't need fertilizer in poor soil because it has weird aerial root structure actively secreting goop that support nitrogen fixation bacteria, so in theory easier/more sustainable agriculture without fertilizer, but the thing is a bit more tree-like and takes 2-3x as long to grow ears. Still neat though.

tweaked bacteria equipped with cadmium sulfide nanocrystals have superior photosynthesis efficiency, converting sunlight and CO2 into acetic acid, which can be fed to other tweaked E. Coli who can convert acetic acid to butanol.

A synthetic pathway for the fixation of carbon dioxide in vitro | Science
Artificial CO2 fixation cycle (CETCH) made from a combo of 11 enzymes found across animals and plants appears to be 2-3 times faster and 25% more energy efficient than the Calvin cycle, but outputs a weird glyoxylate (which can be further converted to other stuff but...) rather than glucose so now just need to stuff a synthetic bacterium with DNA to build and operate those 11 enzymes to see if it really is better than photosynthesis. Primary boost is replacing RuBisCO with the enzyme ECR for better initial CO2 capture.
