New Coal Technology Harnesses Energy Without Burning, Nears Pilot-Scale Development
Interesting chemical loop method to bypass direct combustion of coal or syngas. Used sealed process to strip iron oxide of oxygen with coal or syngas carbon to produce CO2 and reduced iron oxide, along with any coal dregs. The reduced iron oxide is brought outside of the chemical reactor and exposed to air, which causes it to heat up exothermically as it reacquires oxygen, the heat of which can run a conventional boiler for a steam turbine power generator. Makes CO2 capture much easier, and allows isolation of slag materials for separation/vitrification, rather than sending it up as flue gases. Wonder if this could be paired with the chemical looping desalination processes proposed for high temperature nuclear reactors?

$600/ton for CO2 capture, according to this tech review. I'm willing to believe this is a more negative assessment of the bottom range of the cost range, compared to the newest techniques. In theory this only gets cheaper as the atmospheric PPM get higher too, unfortunately.

Interesting startup going after the air carbon capture market utilizing new adsorbent techniques (with a heavy emphasis on utilizing available waste process/steam heat for amine recovery). Certainly helps that atmospheric CO2 concentrations are approaching 400 PPM, making it even more economically viable. Claim a target of $100/ton from a cargo container sized unit outputting 1000 tons a year.

The DIRECT guys are proposing Leviathan, an update to the old Truax Sea Dragon design using annular aerospike rocket engines. Which is exactly the idea I was kicking around with college friends back before 2000. Sea Dragon basically revolved around the logical end to the big dumb booster argument, making a rocket so large that certain materials handling issues become easier. Namely, using submarine pressure hull manufacturing techniques on half inch thick steel plates formed into a cylindrical tank body. You build this in a shipyard, not a clean room hangar. Due to size, sea transport and launh is must, but that ends up making a lot of other things easier. Leviathan neatly sidesteps one of the issues with Sea Dragon; the second stage expandable nozzle skirt. Aerospikes get almost equivalent performance for less complexity and risk. Reusuability is easier at this size, and sets the ground for SSTO.

Wait, now they are doing photoelectrochemical hydrogen production with the intent of synthetic natural gas production? Seems they are close to the magical 1.23V open circuit voltage needed for direct solar hydrogen production.

The Technology That Can Communicate Electronically Through Solid Steel - BAE Systems
BAe rigs up an acoustic information transfer system to cut the number of through-hull connectors on submarines, reducing the number of penetrations. Though I'm a little surprised they are using an acoustic system, as you would normally want to cut down on noise output, especially at anything with a sea interface. I guess the transmission power is sufficiently small enough not to go far. Couple this with a simple post shaped plug sticking out of the hull as part of an inductive power transfer system, and you could almost eliminate all through-hulls short of cooling water and waste related pipes.

Direct full server mineral oil immersion cooling is now possible with appropriate power supplies and SSD hard disks (rotating hard disks are actually air breathing). These guys are packing it as a 42U rack lying on it's back to allow easier single server removal, though frankly that would make a hell of a mess and it would be better to go with monolithic sealed units that fail in place...
