Is Google building a hulking floating data center in SF Bay? | Internet & Media - CNET News
Hrm, so the convert-a-tanker floating datacenter guys disappeared, but Google is building a barge datacenter. Note that barge may be towable offshore, but it isn't something I would call an offshore structure (need a semisub or TLP style structure to be safe from storms)

A Look Inside Amazon’s Data Centers « Data Center Knowledge
That Perdix container is not a normal ISO container, but it could be a composite of 4 ISO containers (2x2) or possibly 6 (3x2) based on clues in the image, which would cut down on shipping costs. But the article mentions a 20 foot width, which doesn't jive with 2x8 feet or 3x8 feet, but if it really is cut in halves or thirds, that would be something on the order of 10 or 7 foot widths...

Oh hell yes. Amazon just opened up the Asia/Tokyo region for AWS. I think I just heard the collective soiling of pants of every physical and virtual hosting outfit in Japan. Amazon can undercut all the domestic providers and maintain a long price war to kill them off. This also has interesting implications for japanese business process outsourcers operating in china, as they can reduce their server costs while keeping data in japan (well, for various definitions of safe)(this assumes they aren't already using chinese domestic cloud services such as the alibaba cloud). Too bad import/export isn't available yet. I would love to do bulk backup right now...

Hrm, sour grapes from the joint work with Fujitsu to cause this? Or just plain profit motivations making asharing deal less attractive. METI courting the big global cloud companies? Or is this something on the surface that's fair, when it's really sweetheart deals to NTT and friends? The idea of a special district is interesting, but pushing it up a notch as a kind of tax haven/free trade zone would make it more appealing though.

Green Revolution Cooling
Direct full server mineral oil immersion cooling is now possible with appropriate power supplies and SSD hard disks (rotating hard disks are actually air breathing). These guys are packing it as a 42U rack lying on it's back to allow easier single server removal, though frankly that would make a hell of a mess and it would be better to go with monolithic sealed units that fail in place...

Asiajin " Amazon Opens Cloud Subsidiary In Japan
So Amazon AWS/EC2/S3 is rolling out the local office and may be putting up a japanese datacenter in the future. Except one thing doesn't quite make sense. I know for a fact that Amazon was standing up a datacenter in Japan back in 2007 with the implication that it was for AWS, so back then I figured it was only a short matter of time before EC2 had asia zone possibilities. Did that not work out, or was that datacenter exclusively for Amazon Japan's web ops and not for AWS?

ServerSky - Server Sky
Taking a page from space activists, there is a proposal to place large scale datacenters in orbit as a distributed network of satellites, similar to a beefed up Iridium/Globalstar/IMARsat network where large numbers of servers live in the satellite as a server cluster which is itself part of a cluster node network in orbit, possibly with laser crosslinks. Latency issues will probably force the datacenter satellites into LEO/MEO rather than HEO/GEO. There is a roundabout possibility of using space solar power satellites in GEO (or push comes to shove ground stations) to fire laser/microwaves at the datacenter satellites to provide external power. Considering the overall movement towards wireless networks and ubiquitous computing, in may be in the world's best interest to migrate towards this kind of architecture.
