Hollow Spheres
These guys are working on innovative ceramic hollow spheres for use in armor applications. One type is just spheres packed onto a backing plate, providing limited flex. The next type is packing spheres into woven tubes of kevlar, creating lumpy bead strings that can be assembled into a flexible armor. Final type is a hex tile module with a limited play interface, allowing small flexibility and easy customization for large area vehicle armor.

Oxygen-separation membranes could aid in CO2 reduction - MIT News Office
Interesting possible combustor design for oxyfuel plants, where a combustor wrapped in this ceramic membrane does heat accelerated oxygen ion transport across the membrane from the air side to the combustor interior. How useful this is for regular oxygen separation is up for debate though, since this seems to want a direct heat source which would be difficult to arrange for a traditional ASU, thus pushing you to cryogenic air separation techniques. Hrm, I wonder if the flow rates and weight would be attractive to aircraft jet engine combustor applications, maybe extending up into a competitor for LACE?

ULTRAMET - Advanced Materials Solutions
Apparently involved with a new high temp noise suppression foam made from hafnium carbide/silicon carbide that ca be stuffed directly into a combustor to provide combustion noise suppression. The foam has high permeability, allowing gases and combustion to move freely, and the structure helps to create uniform combustion. Though I can't imagine this being useful for any high speed gas /liquid fuel combustors/engines, but the press releases talked about jet engines so maybe it actually can?
