Traditional ball bearings have some sort of cage to prevent coincidental impact and friction against adjacent balls, but the separation cage introduces additional friction. These guys claim they can get better performance, by eliminating the cage, and introducing a divot in the ball bearing race, which causes slightly uneven movement which somehow prevents adjacent bearings from impacting each other.

Congratulations Cyberdyne, you have now found the motherlode of government funding sources for development. Because who can really argue with increasing the safety of radiation workers by making a load bearing exoskeleton to carry that heavy tungsten rad shield? Now if they could only join the battery pack of HAL with those human cooling suits NASA made a while back for kids with body heat cooling disorders, you might have workers that won't keel over from heat stroke at Fukushima.

Energy Innovation Portal: The Sandia Cooler
I wonder how practical this could be scaled up for large air cooling needs that already use fans? Though the intake and exit orientation relative to the heat source could be problematic as how you should and direct the intake and exhaust has serious efficiency implications.

Interesting, but the problem with this is the air gap between the heat source and the rotating heatsink, and potentially the large lack of coverage at the center due to the intake. This probably puts a practical upper limit on heat density, as heat has to cross the bottom gap, which is operating as a air/gas bearing for the impeller fin assembly. The center intake area issue is probably mitigated by the thermal plate effect of the bottom of the impeller facing the heat source.

Magnetal - Advanced Technology for Magnetic Bearings
Interesting, but a little sketchy. It seems to be a properly integrated Halbach array magnet being using for magnetic levitation in a bearing, with some self correcting fores that are useful, but aren't Halbach arrays by definition a drag device that has to be overcome by other forces? Can the drag really be superior to classical magnetic bearings? Or perhaps not, but simplicity of manufacturing means it may be the cheaper choice in the realm of magnetic bearings. But maximum bearing force capacity (lift capability of a Halbach array) is kinda limited usually, right?
