NAE Website - Coming of Age in New York: The Maturation of Energy Efficiency as a Resource
I like the concept of "market aware energy consumption asset" AKA the smart appliance, that can fiddle with it's operational cycles to time shift energy consumption when energy is cheaper (and possibly chose an energy source, say local vs grid), work in concert with other smart appliances to keep overall consumption below a certain threshold (say to not go over the capacity of a battery bank's output), and possibly cooperate with the local utility or regional ISO.

Amazon Web Services Blog: The AWS Storage Gateway - Integrate Your Existing On-Premises Applications with AWS Cloud Storage
This might be useful, but it requires a large amount of local storage for now. The upcoming cache version might be suitable if you have reasonably fast local storage for the cache disk (SSD? SAN based even?), as an implementation of the long range monster iSCSI concept for operations. Better have a fast connection though...

Consortium for SEP 2 Interoperability
So a couple of major IP transport layer standards organizations are working on compatibility to support smartgrid applications in the home. HomePlug would cover HomePlug aware wired hardware communicating over powerline (PLC) (and covers communicating with electric and hybrid vehicles charging in the garage), while wifi and ZigBee cover mobile and low power sensor hardware. Sure took long enough to do this, and it will be interesting to see the fight between Cisco, the power meter makers, and Android for domination of the home energy management space.

Kaminario K2 DRAM Storage Appliance
Big, and probably filthy expensive. Why the hell can't somebody make a 1U with a huge motherboard to accept regular DDR2 or DDR3 RAM sticks for block storage like a DDRdrive or Hyperdrive5? Commodity always wins in the end. Even Intel is getting out of the SLC NAND flash SSD business since the scale of consumer MLC NAND flash SSD production is vastly improving things.

Overview | Nexsan E60 | By Name | Products | Nexsan
Nice high density storage hardware, but a pity about the setup. RAID6 isn't going to save you from bitrot, and it only gets worse as the disk size goes up since spinning hard disk sustained access speeds have topped out around 125MB/sec, but disk sizes are going over 2TB now so restriping an array is an exercise in patience. AutoMAID is interesting, but that's really only applicable when using certain storage access styles and filesystems. Also note that it requires a 1.2m (48 inches!) depth rack (most racks are 32-36 inches!). Too bad I can't stuff Nexenta into this directly, though I suppose stringing it up via 10Gbit iSCSI to a Nexenta head wouldn't be too bad...

Cloud File Server | Cloud Storage Gateway | Nasuni
I remember seeing someone say somewhere about the possibility of using ZFS combined with L2ARC and iSCSI, such that a sufficiently large enough L2ARC for local read caches and a good ZIL could mask using iSCSI to connect to remote real storage, even with latencies usally associated with a cross-continent connection. I wonder if this is doing that to some degree?

New Measurement Device Helps Monitor Power Consumption via Power Line -- Tech-On!
So somebody is finally getting around to the problem of monitoring non-smart appliances and getting the data to building management systems without having to install new networking lines (while avoiding wireless like ZigBee due to limited spectrum) by using an inline PLC modem to send data to a management station/controller. Smart to use the inline device as a switchable sensor/master. Now if only somebody like Intel or Atmel or TI could make a nice single chip hybrid sensor/PLC modem for both retrofit and new build devices, things could really change.

Intel's experimental sensor analyzes appliance power consumption from single outlet -- Engadget
Interesting concept from intel for remote power consumption measurement of devices. Fixes the chicken-and-egg problem of needing smarthome/smartmeter/smartgrid compatible appliances that can directly report consumption to be able to measure granular energy consumption in a home. It still won't provide true remote control (smarthome may be able to shut down individual outlets as a broad measure), but it's a decent way to retrofit existing homes and appliances. Though Intel or somebody is going to make simple inline smarthome compatible power controllers for appliances at prices that manufacturers will live with (assuming there isn't a government mandate forcing the integration) eventually...
