Work on speeding up growth of indoor raised plants while also speeding up breeding to target specific traits. Simple stuff like keeping plants lit 22 hours a day with red and blue LED's, combined with newer computer models for gene combinations.

Nitrogen fixation in a landrace of maize is supported by a mucilage-associated diazotrophic microbiota
Corn/maize variant that doesn't need fertilizer in poor soil because it has weird aerial root structure actively secreting goop that support nitrogen fixation bacteria, so in theory easier/more sustainable agriculture without fertilizer, but the thing is a bit more tree-like and takes 2-3x as long to grow ears. Still neat though.

Fujitsu Turns Semiconductor Plant Into Vegetable Plant -- Tech-On!
Fujitsu already closed several semiconductor fabs in that town, shipping the manufacturing hardware to new fabs in china. One site was so heavily contaminated that they couldn't sell the property after razing the plant and doing remediation, so they got the prefecture to build a magnet school on the site. I assume this plant is one of the older fabs on the southwest side of town, but wasn't heavily contaminated. With a still usable clean room in an industrial park full of other fabs, it would have been hard to sell otherwise in such a depressed local economy.

Sky Green - Technology
Odd vertical farming layout hardware. Basically uses a continuous chain loop/ferris wheel to carry troughs up a vertical distance. So at first glance, probably not hydroponic compatible. Also, seems to focus on leafy plants, and the troughs may be shaded for half a transit on the loop. Still interesting. Apparently in commercial use in Singapore.

Fine-Tuning Growth Conditions Helps Cyanobacteria Flourish
Upping the phosphorus a bit means the limiters for growth are generally CO2 and light. Light you can do with tricky clear acryllic tubes and panels in novel arrangements. But the phosphorus is a problem. World supply is getting tighter due to industrial agriculture and runoff, so there is talk about peak phosphorus. Since we don't harvest sewage sludge and runoff for phosphorus, it gets trapped in sediment or washed out to sea. Most of the easy phosphorus sources are gone now.

Decrease in Nitrate Concentration in Leafy Vegetables Under a Solid-state Illuminator -- Samuoliene et al. 44 (7): 1857 -- HortScience
Interesting research that giving a plant during 10% of it's total light exposure time exposure to a LED light source reduced nitrates, boosted carbohydrates, and appears to have other benefits. 10% exposure means it isn't necessary to build expensive LED lighting for all greenhouse plants (simply rotate their trays through a properly equipped area). This may be applicable to hydroponics.

Panasonic: Oxygen-rich Water Encourages Growth of Plants -- Tech-On!
Hrm, I wonder if this could be used out in the field by having an inline aerator microbubbler near the nozzles of agricultural watering equipment? Much easier to implement in hydroponic systems though. Actually, I wonder if you could make an oxygen and carbon dioxide rich water stream for hydroponics, and if that has merit?
