Interesting that parking area interior navigation is achieved not by RF or visual beaconing, but using a vehicle's intrinsic object avoidance sensor visual imagery to match with a path given by the parking area's management server via a series of stored photos.

Moderately high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell than can use less than clean gas from an onboard liquid fuel reformer for vehicle applications (small size specifically for cars). Basically a range extender in the 3-5KW class. The idea is to run the fuel cell almost continuously all day, based on the assumption that while the fuel cell won't meet average driving power needs, it does fulfill daily total power consumption needs, averaged over 24 hours. So you use less battery than you normally would, but you still run the risk of absolute power loss. Basically, this is range extension for commuters, not true long range extension that could be refueled for immediate go power. Which isn't a bad compromise, and generally puts you into the same camp as pure EV's, but without the onerous 8 hour recharge requirement to get a full day's worth of range.

Using an electric supercharger to fill in the power gaps of a conventional turbocharger (particularly turbo lag) in a series configuration, makes for a different sort of hybrid powerplant. Might have legs in the small engine market, as the paper suggests.

Mobile chargers could keep electric cars juiced up - tech - 05 September 2010 - New Scientist
Interesting concept for a portable recharge station for PHEV's and EV's (probably truck based, better if the truck itself is a PHEV) to meet surge demand at certain locations and events. I would imagine that a flywheel based battery would be a better choice than a chemical battery considering the time period and duty cycle for a full recharge of the service station before it has to redeploy to a new location (well, unless you commit to having a microturbine genset on the truck...)

Lotus Range Extender Engine headed for market
I can understand the desire to reuse known technology, but wouldn't a microturbine be a better choice? I know someone was working on a wankel range extender as well, but wankels chew through rotor lube oil.

GM Planning Rotary Power Plant for 2nd Generation Chevy Volt….Did we Miss the 1st Generation?
Interesting report of GM looking at a high density powerplant option for the followon Volt vehicle. A wankel rotary is interesting, but the main expertise for that is Mazda, so there would need to be a tech agreement. I am a little surprised by the drivetrain cost issue with a microdiesel. Small diesel generators for boats don't seem to have such a cost issue, and this is a series hybrid vehicle so it should be a drop in replacement. I'm also surprised there isn't a return to a microturbine. GM has some turbine history, and Capstone is a small enough company to buy outright. Capstone, or WilliamsJet, have great tech for single piece milled turbines.

Nice little overview of V2G tech and the coming smartgrid as a potential opportunity for japanese businesses to fight back after their crushing defeat in the software IT business. Except, the horse is already out of the barn, considering there are real smartgrid deployments in the US, while in japan the government is still in the discussion stage (typically talking forever, then bam, sudden fullscale nationwide rollout of one solution that is slightly behind, as opposed to homogeneous tech rollouts elsewhere). Many businesses have been forced to go to the US to do tech demonstrations and rollouts because of a lack of opportunities in japan, which is telling.

Toyota to Develop Home Energy Management System with Storage Battery -- Tech-On!
Toyota getting in to the home energy management game. Naturally their end goal is the ability to do overnight and quick charging of PHEV and EV type vehicles, but this could be a tidy little business in it's own right if they work with construction suppliers and power companies to link into smart grids. Naturally local generation (solar, wind, natural gas fuelcell) and local storage have big parts to play in a smart grid, so making a good agnostic controller/management system is a must.

Ford announces car-to-grid communications system for EVs — Autoblog
Finally pulling the pieces together for an actual vehicle2grid setup, at least for testing purposes. There are long term issues that need to be resolved regarding the balance of control over charge/discharge cycles and minimum %charge remaining in the battery of PHEV/EV systems. Am I willing to give up control of 25% or more of my battery capacity in exchange for some sort of meter crediting or reduced rates?
